does anyone still use the piracy feed there are still some users clearly but idk if it justifies the infra cost & the experience probably sucked cause ive been doing moderation like once every 2 weeks will gladly hand over the src and the db (posts + ban list) if anyone cares to take it from me

(sorry for not actively moderating the feed nowadays, that stuff is just so uninteresting and annoying to see that it killed the interest i had in reading through the feed. hopefully this helps)

xormetric @tentacle.expert · 24/09/2025
probably gonna be banning more news outlets so that in conjunction with the above, we can hopefully get rid of the 100s of identical posts that go "did you know vpn torrent?????" every single time a streaming service raises their pricing

xormetric @tentacle.expert · 24/09/2025
posts quoting feed-banned users, and replies in threads originally started by feed-banned users, are now ignored by the feed. n.b. this was already the case for posts directly replying to banned users. these restrictions do not apply to replies/quotes by certified pirates.

i just lost interest over time, maybe since when i hit like 900-1k followers it took me long to admit it to myself but i didn't derive joy from it anymore, so i got rid of it. not much more to it

xormetric @tentacle.expert · 21/08/2025
i still moderate the feed once every few days lol i just have no reason to post on this account or check its following timeline anymore

hey what's up

xormetric @tentacle.expert · 05/08/2025
posts with more than 50% of their length being facets (links or mentions) are now ignored from the piracy feed

i have a bias towards extension fields on existing lexicons because it allows firehose consumers to be more stateless (whether that's relevant depends on your case ofc) but if you're editing records then yeah, sidecar, i'd consider breaking cid links enough of a problem to avoid the other approach
050
xormetric @tentacle.expert · 16/07/2025
anyways yeah makes sense i'll keep the account up but like i do want to retire its usage as much as possible
010
xormetric @tentacle.expert · 16/07/2025
fucked up that hashtags outside post content have been in the app.bsky.feed.post lexicon for all this time and they're still not part of social-app

xormetric @tentacle.expert · 16/07/2025
where went through a bunch of my early posts and i'm not really seeing it tbh

why are people so obsessed with vpns as the single default censorship circumvention measure. this shit is bypassable with a ublock filter don't go paying some other random company just so they mitm your social media
2190
xormetric @tentacle.expert · 11/07/2025
i think "intentionally implement regional blocks as easy as possible to bypass" is as much opposition as you'll get tbh. pretty good track record on that front
020
xormetric @tentacle.expert · 11/07/2025
hm sad
070
xormetric @tentacle.expert · 11/07/2025
do you think one could get this merged into one of the default ublock lists lol

github.com/bluesky-social… added a new field to ipcc so you need another ublock filter `||bsky.app/ipcc$replace=/(?<="countryCode":").+?(?=")/US/` `||bsky.app/ipcc$replace=/(?<="isAgeRestrictedGeo":").+?(?=")/false/`

yeah, and feedgens need the same firehose as the appviews, so any attempt to disallow consumption of the firehose is an actual loss of feature even for users of the official bluesky app/pds/etc
120
xormetric @tentacle.expert · 10/07/2025
let me be clearer i guess if Bluesky PBC wants to make users of non-policy-compliant appviews (e.g. zeppelin) invisible their only option is to make all third-party-PDS users invisible (probably making all their engineers resign), because they cannot tell which users are using which appviews
110
xormetric @tentacle.expert · 10/07/2025
...which is why zeppelin exists
110
xormetric @tentacle.expert · 10/07/2025
not as far as i'm aware (which is why i was making the post)
140
xormetric @tentacle.expert · 10/07/2025
i guess if you're on the PBC-hosted PDSes? but transferring a bsky-hosted account to another PDS is like trivial, i kind of assume anyone that cares about the censorship resistance of their account/timeline is on some third-party PDS
120
xormetric @tentacle.expert · 10/07/2025
yes, the censorship resistance relies on you making the bare minimum of effort to use the infra that does not censor
0100
xormetric @tentacle.expert · 10/07/2025
a corporation with a hierarchical structure which has locked open the network such that infrastructure can exist that does not comply with its policy decisions (e.g. zeppelin) and PDS owners can set PDS_BSKY_APP_VIEW environment variables to so their users transparently use it instead of PBC infra
120
xormetric @tentacle.expert · 10/07/2025
bluesky can't even tell whether a user is a zeppelin user tho
140
xormetric @tentacle.expert · 10/07/2025
you cannot derive conclusions on any piece of action by "Bluesky" before knowing where it is enforced it could be any combination of the bsky.app, api.bsky.app, the bsky.network relay, the bsky.network PDSes, or bluesky-social/pds and you especially should not *doom* before knowing which it is

it's more a function of how long you've been on the site and which random list makers dislike you what you've done tbh

perhaps if you think "everyone else is just an extremist" or "politics just divides people" consider instead that it might be that your positions are so extreme and make you so unlikable that people want to keep you as divided as they can from them

xormetric @tentacle.expert · 29/06/2025
i wonder what happened to him to make a guy that "doesn't want to talk about politics" (spends all his time finding political posts to argue under) i wonder what happened to make him emotionally evaluate politics as "crap" and how that might influence the manner he engages with the subject

the only emotion one feels at reading your replies is befuddlement at how someone could be so fucking clueless. the only emotion one feels while interacting with you is frustration at having to attempt dealing with your cluelessness.

everyone is free to look at the source code and fork or build and host it, and inherit all its brokenness and shit but im sure other people have built apps that provide the same features but aren't built on 2 year old libraries and the shittiest personal microframework in existance, go use those

the fact one can run a ~full bluesky appview, becoming entirely independant from bluesky the company, for a fraction of what the big mastodon instances pay for hosting seems notable

I wasn't there in WCD's time so every time I see this take come up on the piracy feed it just makes me even more deeply curious. what is it specifically that WCD had that hasn't been recovered or replicated?
000
xormetric @tentacle.expert · 25/06/2025
do they really not? the successor surpassed what's torrent and artist counts a good while ago, and the other trackers are still alive censoring the URLs does absolutely nothing on here btw you're not gonna get in trouble for linking live torrents to copyrighted content, let alone a single dead site

it's only a bluesky appview if it comes from the Bluesky PBC, otherwise it's just sparkling xrpc
