That poaching volley from Demon is 100% in contrast to Fritz' volleying. de Minaur has the hands to awkwardly maneuver the racquet to make the needed volley

This is not to hate on Taylor Fritz, but his total discomfort at the net, especially for an American raised on hard courts, is a failure of coaching from the time he first started playing (i.e., not so much now).

Hey, @tennischannel.bsky.social , you break away from deuce, Team World serving to save the first set at 4/5, for a raft of commercials? What gives?

I missed most of the Fritz/Alcaraz match after 2/3s of the way into the first. Let me know, is it emblematic that Fritz' last shot was a short, low ball he had to take in the forecourt? #nothisfavoritespotonthecourt

Have to be honest, I've never been a huge fan of @lavercup.bsky.social , for a bunch of reasons, but today's two singles matches were simply outstanding, tactically and psychologically. Tennis pros playing like it's a club match, really really wanting to win for their mates. Just great

Really fascinating; earlier (and w/Tien) Agassi focuses on tactics, now it's all emotion that he's sending Demon's way

I'd never contend that one match has as much potential weight as this, but... The French and US winner shows he's a new, stable force on tour, or doesn't... Demon partially salvages a soft year with a gutsy win over the two time major winner

De Minaur/Zverev, another match that's proving to be a fine example of tactics-needed-to-be-figured-out *and* executed. Demon lost at sea in the first set, finding his footing in the second

Luv listening to Mark Petchey, but I don't see how we can call Zverev's tennis atm "unstoppable" given how the court conditions are 100% in his favor and 100% *not* in Demon's.

This Tien/Cobolli match is so fascinating. Not great tennis from a "shots they're making" angle, but an example of how what works @ the club level operates for the pros too. Producing what's needed at the moment isn't easy evn if the hitting's not tough. (Court surface having a lot to do with it.)

Look, I understand the challenges of making doubles, especially ATP doubles, a profitable and popular part of the pro tour. But it's hard to say tennis, in the macro, is doing all it can when the landing page for the #USOpen doesn't even mention who's made it, just today!, to the men's dub finals

During her match vs Kalinskaya it was commented upon that Navarro's coach, Peter Ayers, called out to her that she was "earning this" as Kalinskaya committed multiple UEs in the third set, and how that was an example of great coaching (to which I'd agree)

He won, and congratulations, but it's hard to undersand how Khachanov, at 6'6", can not have been at the net at least once in the last 3 games, allowing Tien to float defensive shots again and again? Seems to me it makes for a hard slog, but he got the W

It wasn't that long ago that many tennis journalists and fans were bemoaning that with modern power "there'll never be another McEnroe." My retort was, "How many McEnroe's have there been, period? It's a silly metric." Today we have Jenson Brooksby, Lerner Tien, & Adrian Mannarino in the top 100 1/2

Yes. Similarly, it's reasonable to believe that increased prize money, mostly at the upper levels but really all down the rankings (not enough yet, but...), has made it easier to not play as often. All in all a good thing

It wasn't enough for the #USOpen to make a mockery of the mixed doubles competition by dissing ranked players w/putting them in qualifying (for an exo of made-up teams, for goodness sake), they had to go and deny past champion @StanWawrinka a wlldcard in favor of...someone ranked in the 200s. #shame

9 - This is Iga Swiatek's ninth WTA-1000 final win against a WTA-1000 champion, surpassing Aryna Sabalenka (8) for the outright-most such wins of any player since the format's introduction in 2009. Legitimate. #NBO26 | @wtatour.bsky.social

But between her hesitant footwork (less than gainly) and the rather iron elbow shove of the ball, it was born of nerves (we all get them), [it] wasn’t no drop shot. link: www.si.com/tennis/what-... 3/3end

What Gauff did is more properly called (by many, but not in the text books) a dump; she hit down on the ball, or we could say she was looking to just pop it over, and had it successfully gone over she’d have won the point. 2/3

Me, at Wertheim's Tennis Mailbag: Can we dispense w/calling Coco Gauff’s missed ball from mid-court, at match pnt, a drop shot? Drop shots are hit w/more or less underspin, but definitely w/an open racket face and ideally hit up so they drop more vertically and not forwards (see also: underspin) 1/3

As the ITF ("World Tennis?" Really?) & the tours push the 1000s, an undescribed vision of "only major tournaments in major cities", and continue on a similar path with Davis Cup home/away ties, opportunities for fans to see live tennis or find new favorite players will just decrease, simple as that.
