I hear ya. I don’t think we will make it to Argentina next year but we definitely want to visit Brazil. I have a few students from Brazil and I’ve gotten interested in Brazilian culture.

Cool, I may just have to get one. I see you’re down in South America. My wife and I may head down there next year for a few months. How are you liking it?

@tennessippi.bsky.social's pictures from my hometown made me a little bit nostalgic, so I thought I'd post one from what will probably be my last trip to the US for several years. theatre savannah, tn, usa november 2024 📷 Ricoh GRIII
A picture of a 1930s-era theatre with christmas lights decorating both sides and the top. The front is lit in red and yellow neon, with the name "Savannah" lit in white neon lettering. There is a large red bow centered at the top of the building, with smaller bows on each half of the two sets of double-doors.

A lot of American political analysts call things “economic populism” that are just generally accepted policies in most of the developed world. Workers’ rights, family leave, universal healthcare, lower educational costs, etc. Globally, these are not radical or even populist policies. It’s normal.

Mary Oliver
Of The Empire

We will be known as a culture that feared death and adored power, that tried to vanquish insecurity for the few and cared little for the penury of the many. We will be known as a culture that taught and rewarded the amassing of things, that spoke little if at all about the quality of life for people (other people), for dogs, for rivers. All the world, in our eyes, they will say, was a commodity. And they will say that this structure was held together politically, which it was, and they will say also that our politics was no more than an apparatus to accommodate the feelings of the heart, and that the heart, in those days, was small, and hard, and full of meanness.

If you take away the ability to make more money than any other country in the world, what is appealing about living in the U.S.?

I like the idea of anti-consumerism as a political strategy under the Trump/Musk administration, especially avoiding MAGA supporting businesses when possible.

Trump is the Ugly American. Behaving the stereotype with his selfishness, greed, lack of morality, entitlement, impatience, ignorance and aggression. Adorned in tacky clothing, artificial hair, and a spray tan while waiting for his next Big Mac.

The U.S. has always had two competing myths. - one based off selfishness, greed, and white supremacy - one considering “all men are created equal” and where diversity is our strength

Brazil seems like a strange reflection of the U.S. Tons of natural resources, the mixture of the Indigenous, European, African and Asian. Exploitation on an economic level, yet beautiful art, food, and culture happening only because of the mixing of people and cultures.

One of the many problems of Elon Musk is that he only thinks in technological metaphors. Like treating the government like a “server” that can be unplugged and plugged back in.

I’m not sure about the first question. I think the second is more in the subconscious, than the conscious. Just in the water. Third, is interesting. I don’t think many have the imagination to consider us not being the top of the global totem pole.

The "frontier mindset" is deeply American and is why so many rural Americans (even those that voted for Harris) believe that Trump "won't impact them that much." You would think that with the globalization and digitalization of the world, this ideology would die out, but this myth survives.

I recently was speaking with a Turkish lady that studied for six months in the U.S. Like many people I encounter outside the U.S., she no longer idealizes or trusts the U.S. to do the right thing.

In the Tennessee Valley, FDR’s policies still bolster the infrastructure. My state park, national park, and electricity came from the New Deal. But from where I’m from, the illusion of the frontier mindset and the emotional draw of white grievance politics wins the day.
