Announcing the 2027 Print Magazine!
A Call For Submissions for the 2027 Print Issue October is here, which means it's time to briefly step away from our Nikko series and put out the annual call for submissions to the 2027 print issue of Tenkara Angler magazine. The real one. The one you can hold in your hands, flip through on the couch, and let a friend borrow that is curious about tenkara... if they promise to give it back. 🙂 The 2027 issue will release around the new year, right in that quiet stretch after the holidays when the fishing calendar slows down and everyone is getting inspired for the upcoming season.

Three Rivers, Ramen, and a Mountain Lodge in the Clouds Trip Report by Michael Agneta #tenkara #flyfishing #japan

Three Rivers, Ramen, and a Mountain Lodge in the Clouds
Tuesday. We're going fishing. For real this time! After Monday's long car ride, sightseeing, brief teaser session on the water, and welcome dinner, we had a full day lined up to fish Nikko City before heading deep into the mountains of the National Park to our accommodations for the rest of the week. About the Area As our alarms went off for breakfast service, we had a few minutes while packing up gear to step out on the balcony and actually take in the Kinugawa Onsen section of Nikko from above.

Meet Our Friend Takuya
One more introduction to make before we get into our days of fishing. When we sat down for dinner at the Kinugawa Grand Hotel Yume no Toki on our first night in Nikko, there were two anglers on the other side of the table we hadn't met before. One of them was Takuya Yamakoshi. While he was dressed in a yukata that evening like the rest of us, Takuya definitely stands out on the water. He shows up to the river in a button-down shirt, a tie, and a driver's cap.

Sunday Morning Riffles – 9/27/2026
Happy Sunday! Fall is officially here. The equinox came and went this week, and the mornings finally have that crispness that makes you want to toss on a hoodie or flannel and find a small stream all to yourself. The website has perked up recently, our Nikko stories have started rolling out here on the site and there's plenty more to come. However, it's been two weeks since the last Riffles, and the tenkara world didn't sit still. We've got a brand looking for a new owner, two gatherings in the West, and some good fall fishing videos.

Meet Our Friend Aki
The next person we'd like to introduce you to is Akihiro Hoshino (Aki). He's become a great friend and is a wonderful ambassador for the greater Nikko area and its long history of fishing. Aki started with bait fishing at age ten. By twelve he was reading books about fly fishing and lure fishing at a relative's house. By thirteen, a friend's father had him tenkara fishing on the river that ran practically through his backyard. That friend's father, by the way, was exceptional teacher. Aki describes watching him catch trout in near-total darkness.

Welcome to Nikko! Trip Report by Michael Agneta #tenkara #nikko #japan
tenkaraangler.com
Welcome to Nikko!
Nikko. This is why Anthony, Matt, & I traveled to Japan. A solid 2+ drive from Tokyo, this is where we'd be staying, and fishing, for the next four days. Figured I'd take you along. Our friend Hiro (you've already met him) picked us up at our Tokyo hotel early Monday morning in his Toyota van. The plan was to drive up into Nikko, do some sightseeing in the morning, meet up with Hiro's Nikko Tenkara partner Takashi Sakauchi in the afternoon, check into our hotel, and then have a "welcome" dinner that night ahead of our first day of fishing on Tuesday.

The Email In the spring of 2023, an email landed in my Tenkara Angler inbox with a simple ask. A man named Hiroyuki Ishii, (Hiro), was writing from Japan. He'd been doing research on tenkara and had discovered, somewhat to his own surprise, that the discipline had taken off in America in a way it hadn't back home. He wanted to come to America and understand why, so he could help preserve and promote tenkara culture in Japan. He found me through Google. Of all the people Google could have served up, it gave him me.

Like a Hummingbird: Some Musings on Life and Tenkara
Lately I've been sitting on the back deck in the coolness of the morning before the heat and humidity envelope the day like a damp, hot blanket of misery. Each morning I'm visited by at least two hummingbirds. Though it's hard to say for sure. All I can really say is that I've only ever seen two at a time. They come to our hummingbird feeder as well as the flowering plants. I watch them come and go. They're so busy. I can't help but to be amazed by these tiny creatures.

Wyoming Tenkara Campout 2026
Brent Auger of DRAGONtail Tenkara put on a spectacular three-night tenkara community campout event in Alpine, Wyoming at the end of August. Now in its second year, with the first taking place just east of Boise, Idaho in 2025, Brent reflected on the experience: "I felt like it turned out quite well and even though quite a few people had to sleep somewhere other than in the campground, we still had great gatherings in the evenings and a decent amount of people pairing up to go out and fish together and had great experiences fishing together."

Sunday Morning Riffles – 9/13/2026
Happy Sunday! I'm writing this one still fighting off a little Nikko jet lag, so bear with me if it reads slightly more erratic than usual. Anthony and Matt are still adventuring in Japan, but I'm back after a week fishing the Nikko headwaters with our friends Hiro and Takashi. Meanwhile Amanda, Bill, and Tom were off representing the crew at DRAGONtail's Wyoming Campout. Between the two trips we basically emptied the office for two weeks, which explains why things got a little quiet here on the site. But that just means there's a genuinely great backlog of tenkara stuff (especially from MostlyTenkara) to catch you up on.

Wyoming First off, we've got Amanda, Bill, & Tom traveling to the DRAGONtail Wyoming Tenkara Campout 2026 to hopefully meet and hang out with a bunch of Tenkara Angler readers. If last year's version in Idaho is any indicator, this should be an epic weekend of fixed line fly fishing! Dyeing Fly Tying Materials with Natural Dyes Article by Steve Allen #flyfishing #flytying #tenkara

Dyeing Fly Tying Materials with Natural Dyes
Article by Steve Allen I was directed down this rabbit hole by Dr. Paul Gaskell via his article published in the Spring 2025 issue of Fly Tyer Magazine. He documented the 19th century British fly tyer and fisher, H.C. Cutcliffe. Dr. Gaskell detailed how he followed Cutcliffe’s methods of sourcing tying materials and dyeing them. H.C. Cutcliffe lived during the mid-1800s at which time you collected your tying materials from the sources at hand; barnyard animals, game birds, silk, and yarn. As most feathers and fur were of naturally occurring coloration the art of fabric dying was employed in the dying of fly-tying materials.

Troubleshooting Common Tenkara Casting Problems
We recently received an email from a reader who had invested a lot of time and energy into learning tenkara, sitting through videos, digging into articles, working through books, but he still couldn't figure out casting. His line was collapsing, tangling, and landing in a pile instead of rolling out cleanly across the water. If that sounds familiar, read on. You're not alone, and you're not hopeless. Tenkara is frequently described as the most accessible form of fly fishing, and that reputation is well earned. The casting stroke is intuitive once it settles in, but getting there requires some experimentation and practice.

The Seiyu Therapy 33 V2 is Available for Pre-Order
You may remember that back in the summer of 2025, we asked the tenkara community to get behind Tony Parmenter's Kickstarter campaign for the Seiyu Therapy 33 V2. The campaign, which aimed to fund both an updated version of the rod and a feature-length documentary about tenkara's role in trauma therapy, didn't reach its funding goal. Tony, being Tony, didn't let that stop him. He's now taking direct pre-orders on the Seiyu Therapy 33 2.0, and this time the window is very small. ESZ Ultra-Portable LED Fly Tying Lamp – Initial Thoughts
ESZ Fishing is a tenkara brand you're likely not aware of unless you pay really close attention. Known for making quality, yet under the radar rods and accessories, I've been given the opportunity to try and change that perception, and their fly tying lamp is one of the latest items to land on my desk. Full disclosure: Ethan at ESZ sent this lamp for evaluation purposes. With an upcoming fishing trip requiring some serious vise time to get prepared, the timing was good and I've had a few solid sessions to form some early impressions.

Pink Squirrel Meets the Balkans
In 2022 I had the chance to visit Croatia, and fish for trout in two areas of the country. I wrote about one of the areas, the Curak River, for Tenkara Angler, but also had a fine time with some guides and new friends in the second area. Recently, my guide to the waters in that area, Antonio, reminiscing about the good times and adventures we had, sent me a photo collage from that trip, and I'll share it here - a tenkara video 'postcard' from Croatia (call it 'Pink Squirrel Meets the Balkans').

The 12 Foot Tenkara Rod Why All-Purpose, Single Length Rods Worth a Look by Michael Agneta #tenkara #flyfishing #tenkararods
tenkaraangler.com
The 12 Foot Tenkara Rod
Why All-Purpose, Single Length Rods Are Worth a Look There's a quiet trend happening in the tenkara rod market, and honestly, I feel it's worth pushing back on a little bit. Zoom rods with their adjustable lengths have dominated the conversation for the past several years, and ultrashort and pocket rods have more recently become all the rage. All have merit, but I wonder if anglers have been ignoring a whole category of excellent rods, otherwise known as the single length, all-around 12-foot tenkara rod. These rods have fun marketing stories behind them.

How to Refresh Your Tired Flies with Steam Article by Tom Davis #tenkara #flyfishing #flytying

How to Refresh Your Tired Flies with Steam
It's common to have your flies become tired and careworn after a long day of fishing. The hackles become limp and lose their shape, especially after that final fish. But here is an easy way to rehabilitate the hackle and refresh them back to an almost new appearance. Just boil some water. The process is easy. Take a pot, or better yet, a teapot and put some water in it. Bring the water to a rolling boil. Select the fly in question and hold it with some forceps or needle nose pliers.

Piscifun Waterproof Fishing Jacket Gear Review
Reading my email back in April of this year, I was excited to learn that Tenkara Angler had been invited by Piscifun to try out a new waterproof fishing jacket. I had recently lost or misplaced mine during my cross-country move from the Carolinas to Oregon, so the timing couldn't have been better. I was expecting a lot more rain than what I was used to in the Southeast, and I was happy for the opportunity to put this jacket through its paces. In the past, I wasn't particularly keen on fishing in the rain, but some recent trips on blue lines during wet weather have consistently brought fish to hand, and my perspective has shifted.

What Makes Tenkara Kebari Worth Their Weight? Article by Devin McPhillips #tenkara #flyfishing #kebari

What Makes Tenkara Kebari Worth Their Weight?
Article by Devin McPhillips What defines the boundary between weighted and unweighted kebari? They may share a prominent hackle, but they are usually fished with different techniques. Weighted kebari support some version of tight-line nymphing, and unweighted kebari reward more traditional tenkara presentations. As I work to improve my technique, this boundary seems more important but less clear. The simplest definition of an unweighted kebari might be the lack of a tungsten bead head. Another simple definition might be the lack of the telltale “clunk” marking the beginning and end of a normal cast.

Fixed Line Fishing From a Kayak Article by Fred Church #tenkara #flyfishing #kayak

Fixed Line Fishing From a Kayak
Article by Fred Church Kayak fishing has become a revolution. Everywhere you look are people fishing from basic big-box store kayaks to tricked out multi-thousand-dollar kayaks. It is easy to understand why. The stealth they enable alone explains the rage. But in addition, even if tricked out, the expense to kayak fish is much less than the traditional bass boat or drift boat. Trailers are optional as throwing a kayak in the back of a pickup or (with help) on top of an SUV is all it takes. Launching is also easy, a ramp is nice, but often not required.

Since then, we've been following along as owner Jerry Hicks has been evolving the product line, recently announing something we think is pretty cool. A Fully Modular Net, Handle, and Wading Staff Anyone who fishes more than one type of water knows how gear can accumulate: a shorter handle net for backpacking into small streams, a longer handle net for floating or larger rivers, and a sepearate collapsible or telescopic wading staff, none of them quite covering every situation on their own.

Completing the New Mexico Trout Challenge on Tenkara Article by Payton Skidmore When the rabbit hole of state-sponsored wild trout challenges consumed me and my obsession with fixed-line angling, New Mexico was never at the top of my destination list. After binge-watching countless episodes of Breaking Bad, I had fallen victim to the idea that New Mexico was just a barren desert with nothing but cactus, heat, and scorpions. But upon further examination, and through the philosophy that trout truly live in the prettiest places, I've come to understand that New Mexico is indeed a Land of Enchantment.

It was Bill that got things rolling. "What was the fishery up north you mentioned? Something about brookies on a bigger river, and maybe some blue lines to check out? I've got a thing nearby coming up, we could meet there and fish." I'd been exploring this region during passing visits for a few years and had discovered a stretch of mainstream that looked like prime tenkara fishing. It's deep within a remote swath of isolated public forests in Northern Wisconsin. The river section itself; heavily wooded, lightly visited, sometimes tough to get signal even with satellite.

More than a Puncher’s Chance
Sometimes fishing can feel so random. One day you feel like you're on top of the world. The next day you can't buy a fish. Don't get me wrong, it's often "nice to just get out", though I still want to catch fish and I measure my success based on that catching. I do grade myself on a curve however and I adjust expectations and "success" based on conditions as I see them. I'm not going to let a tough day of fishing ruin my week, but I admit to feeling a bit defeated some days on the water and I start to calculate how much guitar money I could get if I sold all my fishing and fly tying gear.

I recently took a trip to western North Carolina in search of something. Fish, sure... but perhaps something a little bit more. It's not uncommon that when I make these quasi-spiritual journeys, they're extremely last minute. I'm sure you know the type. You're at work on a Wednesday, growing tired of corporate-speak and meeting after spreadsheet after PowerPoint. Thursday comes around and you've tuned almost everyone and everything out. Might as well be Charlie Brown's teacher on the other end of that Zoom call. By Friday morning you're like, "F*ck it, I gotta get away." Zero planning, no time to make arrangements to meet up with friends.

Every so often, I fish a stream that has all four species of "trout" that can be caught on the same outing. In my part of Wydaho, this would mean that you catch a cutthroat, rainbow, brown and brook trout all during the same session on the water. It's been a while since my last one, but recently it happened again. The International Game Fish Association (IGFA) has numerous Grand Slam categories and what they call "Clubs". There are the IGFA Trout Grand Slam Club (three species in the same day); the IGFA Trout Super Grand Slam Club (four species in the same day); and the IGFA Trout Fantasy Slam Club (five species in the same day).

That moment unknowingly began a slow, meaningful journey, one of healing, rediscovering fly fishing, and redefining parts of myself that had once been lost to both personal and professional wounds. Fly fishing has been a passion of mine for most of my life and I will never forget my dad teaching me the sport. I had, however, been away from it for almost 20 years after my son’s extremely premature and traumatic birth and subsequent chronic disabilities.

Let it Flow
Article by Nick Feller Change. If there’s one thing in life that seems to stay constant, it's change. Everything changes. Seasons and weather. Friends and relationships. Health and hopes. Everything down to the water in our own creeks and streams. Ever changing. A Greek philosopher named Heraclitus said, "No man ever steps in the same river twice, for it's not the same river and he's not the same man." I try to remember these words when I become overwhelmed with life's changes. At the same time, it also helps me to take comfort in with everything that may become different, the fish remain.

Design Study: 3D Printed Tenkara Line Winding System
Article by Guenther Shepherd I’m an avid tenkara angler and aspiring industrial designer. As part of my independent study in industrial design, I set out to make tenkara gear. In just under 15 months I undertook the process of turning an idea into a product. That process: inspiration, prototyping, and refining is the story I’m going to tell here. The Tea & Trout line winding system. (From left to right) Line winder, spool on magnetic rod mount, stack of spools. I’ve been tenkara fishing for years and I’ve cycled through a lot of gear in that time.

Does Everybody Know What Time Is It? Tool Time!
I've lost a few tenkara rod tip plugs over the years. I've lost fewer lately, but in my early tenkara years, I lost them moderately frequently. I've also had tenkara rods plucked out of my back pocket or sling pack when a wily branch snagged the tip plug's Dacron loop or caused too much friction against the Universal Tip Cap. Because of these incidents, I am wary of tip plugs and their designs. But recently I was fishing with a friend of mine who is a contractor. I noticed that when he put away his rod (an…

Tenkara Fishing the Oku-Kinugawa in Full Flow
Typhoon weather made for a rough start to the week in the Oku-Kinugawa drainage, but the storms left something behind worth fishing. Rising water displaces insects, dislodges food from the banks, and tends to pull char out of their lies and into feeding mode. By the time conditions stabilized, the river was running full and the iwana were active. Guides Takashi and Hiro got in the water themselves this week, always a good sign. The Oku-Kinugawa at altitude was in good shape, temperatures comfortable and the mountain greenery at its peak, that vivid early-summer green that follows heavy rain in Japan's mountain valleys.

A Visiting Angler’s Guide to Rocky Mountain National Park
In Episode 27 of the Tenkara Angler Level Line Podcast, myself along with some special guests discussed a few fishing destinations in the Western United States. Payton Skidmore of Skiddy Fishing talked about the Uinta Mountains of Utah, Keegan Uhl of Mostly Tenkara discussed the Eastern Sierras and I talked about Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado (RMNP). As I had gathered the information and organized my thoughts on the topic of RMNP for the podcast, I figured it would be worth getting all the details written down as a reference for Tenkara Angler readers.

Tenkara Angler at the Half: A Mid-Year Update
2026 has entered its sixth month. It seems like the new year had just begun and now we're suddenly looking summer square in the face. This felt like a good time to take stock of what's going on around here at Tenkara Angler and talk directly with you, our community. Please consider this a two way conversation. I'd love your thoughts in the comments section, and there's a short survey at the end if you're willing. The Honest State of Things As Editor-in-Chief, I can be Tenkara Angler's harshest critic. But looking back over the last few years, I'm generally happy with what this little experiment in amateur media has become.

Sunday Morning Riffles – 6/7/2026
Happy Sunday! It's June already... what the heck? Hope our friends in New Hampshire are wrapping up a great weekend of fishing and camaraderie on a high note. Bummed I couldn't make it up this year, but it just wasn't in the cards. However, if you've got a case of FOMO like me, perhaps today's trip through the news and notes of the tenkara world will help take off a bit of the edge. Now, let's wade into those Riffles... Native Colorado Cutthroats Z is on the river recently posted this gem…

How to Fish Small Mountain Streams in Portugal Article by Bill Robichaud #tenkara #flyfishing #portugal

How to Fish Mountain Streams in Portugal
Photo by Antonio Rodrigues The short answer is, very carefully (and with a good appetite). More specifically, just follow these steps: First, listen when your friend and Driftless compadre and Tenkara Angler contributor Dave Noll waxes lyrically about mountain fishing in Portugal and the guide he fished with there last year, Antonio Rodrigues of Minho Fly Fishing. Determine to not delay life (and accept that your anemic IRA won’t be enough for a lavish retirement, so what’s the cost of one trip to Portugal?), and book a plane ticket and couple of days with said Antonio.

Shinto, Buddhism, and Tenkara: What Japan Revealed About Fishing and the Natural World
Finding the Spirits Between the Stones Japan never really announces its spirituality to you... It is just there. Nearly everywhere you look. But that spirituality has definitely informed the entire culture and makes Japan the special place it is. You see it in the way money is handed carefully from one person to another, never wrinkled or folded. It is quiet at a shrine tucked between office buildings. In the small bows made by people to each other. In the arrangement of stones, smoke rising from incense, the sound of water before entering a sacred place.

Idaho Anglers Fish the Nikko Headwaters
In Japan, the weather is getting warmer and the insects are starting to fly, marking the start of the best tenkara season! Last week, we guided clients from Idaho, and successfully caught cherry salmon and char. They had extensive tenkara experience in the United States, so we challenged ourselves to explore not only the main rivers but also the headwaters, traversing mountains and valleys to catch wild char. In Japan, tenkara fishing is said to have originated with professional fishermen, known as "Shoku-Ryoshi," who practiced it as a means of livelihood, supplying their catches to inns and restaurants.

A Springtime Ritual for Native Brookies
Article by Jerry Reitz Emerging from the Hemlocks There is a brief, magical window in mid-May when the natural world seems to catch its breath. The heavy rush of the post-Memorial Day crowds is still weeks away, leaving the mountains quiet, untouched, and utterly peaceful. For us, this is the official kickoff our annual long-weekend camping and fishing pilgrimage to one of our absolute favorite mountain streams in Pennsylvania, pursuing the ultimate small-stream apex predator: the native brook trout. To step into the woods at this time of year is to witness spring at its absolute peak.
