A bit funny, but it appears some one has left a Deipnon offering to Hekate on a cross-roads in my local park! Which is causing a bit of confusion and argument on the local facebook page

We also see deposits of pig heads alongside their hoofs, feacinge ast to the shrine, and with a coin placed on the skull! That must have made dating convenient.

Inside the shrine, the proposed altar was actually off center, in the south east corner

Some very interesting features here, the shrine itself is tiny compared to the barrow

These kind of public use BBQ grills are quite common in other countries. Seems that if people are going to BBQ it would be worth while providing infrastructure that makes it safer.

Fellow ramblers, what do you do when you come to path like this? A closed gate, a very private looking drive way, passing right past the garden furniture! I don't like the idea of being mauled by a jack russell while I'm halfway over the gate

Does anyone else have absolutely no luck with inter library loans through your local library? It feels like there's no point even trying anymore

Haunting spot none the less, especially in winter. The Roman material sticks out like a sore thumb and the ferns seems to grow better on that compared to the medieval material

I didn't realise there were *two* still standing Romano Celtic fellas, I was only aware of the Temple de Janus in Autun

A view facing where the temple stood as it is today, and Pegler's Tump which is just in the field on the opposite of the modern and roman road.

For day-to-day use? Or for sacrifices? Or both? Handled paterae appear on quite a few altars alongside knives and jugs, I can find a number of good examples just browsing the RIB; 1079, 1124, 3285, 1684, 1081, and probably many more...

Although it was built almost 300 years earlier (around 262), the temple at Pagans Hill, Somerset has a very similar layout and dimensions to the Basilica of San Vitale. Both are octagonal, east facing, an outer ambulatory with vaulted ceilings, and and inner cella defined by arched piers.

There is a large 3-sided ditch on the lidar, OS maps identify it as a moat. Looks like two of the sides are about 20m? If that were a temple it would be on the larger size the one at Roman Caistor is 20m x 20m and that's larger than average. Perhaps larger than you'd expect for a minor settlement.

The busts always looked like they have wings to me! Also not to be some kind of conspiracy theorist, but last time I went to see this I couldn't find the third horn. Which sounds like bad joke, but it is at an awkward angle and the lighting doesn't help.

I've always wondered what these might have been mounted on? The spear-head/rattle from West Stow always looks to me like it would be a perfect fit

Happy Year of the Snake! Here's some crested serpents from Roman Britain, first a bronze figure from the temple at Caerwent, second the Durngate Street mosaic from Dorchester, and last the Roman serpent stone from Maryport!

It's a good question, I've never seen a satisfying answer beyond it, just being the style.
