The bolosaurian body impressions Cabarzichnus add to the growing record recovered from several Permian tetrapod ichno- and bodyfossils, such as the varanopid Ascendonanus, as well as more recently documented seymouriamorphs, diadectomorphs, sphenacodontids, and pareiasaurs.

Amazingly, the morphology of some scales on the anterior part of the tail impression is strikingly similar to that observed in the cloacal region of extant reptiles: they form a subhorizontal vent, similar to that of modern squamates. This is the earliest fossil record of a cloacal vent in amniotes!

New unique body impression of an early Permian stem reptile from the Asselian of the Goldlauter Formation, Germany. This specimen allows us to peek at the epidermal scalation of bolosaurids such as Eudibamus cursoris! This new resting trace has been assigned to Cabarzichnus pulchrus n. igen. n. isp.

Last pictures of the anatomical and palaeontological galleries of the Muséum national d’Histoire naturelle before they close for the next 18 months or so. 👋
