From the look of the trailer, that “Backrooms” movie (linked to in the article) owes quite a lot to House of Leaves

I don't want to cut that guy a break for any reason, but the thing he's walking toward is to our right / his left.

Yeah, I came here to say something like “that’s because you haven’t been up close to some recent Steeler 4-0 teams”

If you’re not familiar, this is a problem that goes back a long, long way, since the end of WWII, when the US first occupied the island.

For every product I can think of, ever, it’s marketed via what it can do for you (even if it’s vague like “make you cool”). Has there ever been a product that’s been marketed via the message “it could kill us all”?

That 3 million number was combined across both nights. And oops game 1 that night had 25mm, the next game had 18mm

He’s addressing a (I may not get the exact name correct) Hispanic heritage Day celebration and all he’s been talking about from the get go are building and renovation and falling off of roofs. He literally thinks this is going to resonate.

It’s not “after comments” - Robert Kraft’s pivotal role in suppressing free speech is buried in the later parts of the article

It's the existence of Fox News and right wing media. I have a MAGA person in my family. She insists that Trump isn't a criminal that that we're all being lied to. These people really think that. It's a "You can fool some of the people all of the time" problem.

As we all know data centers are DEEPLY unpopular across the entire political spectrum. So yeah, keep plugging them ahead of the election, Ken, go for it.

McCormick’s not really good at this. He’s a dud. I used to work at a company he was president of and by all accounts he’s a really smart guy. But on tv he just comes across like a loser.

Thank you, that was a missing link in my mind…. How does Hegseth not talking about the lost base publicly make this worse (as God makes it seem in the article)?

4/ Or did he think he was doing something to not just punish someone for the large scale suffering and death they cause, but (in his mind) acting to prevent future suffering and death? I don't know the answer to that either.

3/ Is Mangione just a punk kid thinking he was doing something edgy? Maybe, I don't know the guy.

2/Mangione needs to pay the price under the law. Full stop. (Was that ever in question though?) But it's not just is it "legit to murder someone because you don't like something they did." As another commented said, it's basically the trolley problem.

1/ I suspect my opinion on this won't go over well here, but there's more nuance to it than that. First of all, what we agree on: We need to be a nation of laws (the fact that these laws don't apply for rich people is a separate topic).

It’s programmed to succeed at the task it’s given and to iterate (try different approaches) until it succeeds. It views governance and limiting intruction as barriers to be overcome.

This made me lol: “… best bet for avoiding an irreversible loss of control works like this: as soon as the superintelligent machine comes into existence, but before it’s had a chance to take over the world, we ask it how we can stop it from taking over the world, and we do what it says.”

The headline is a bit misleading. It’s more about the idea (and the scientific research behind it) that the “self” isn’t just the brain with a body attached to it as support. Basically, our “mind” includes our entire body.
