## IFUT Strike Days A few weeks ago, I posted the following item about a strike ballot of members of the Irish Federation of University Teachers (IFUT): ↬telescoper.blog/2026/09/01/the-strike-ballot/ The IFUT ballot has now closed, with the result an overwhelming majority (92.5%) in favour of industrial action, up to and including strike action. For more details see here. The planned strikes have already generated some press reaction: Unless the Government changes its position and starts negotiating very soon, the next steps will be as follows: * **Monday, 5 October:** one-hour work stoppage from **12 noon – 1pm** * **Wednesday, 14 October:** 24-hour strike action and full withdrawal of labour; * **Wednesday, 21 October:** 24-hour strike action and full withdrawal of labour. The first of these dates, 5th October, is World Teachers’ Day. I will be on strike on the following two days. That means the lectures I would have had on these days will not happen. I am sorry for the disruption this will cause to students’ education, but current situation is intolerable. The ball is in the Government’s court. Other campus unions (Unite, SIPTU and TEEU) will be striking too, and over the next couple of weeks or so plans will be made as to how to coordinate picket lines, etc, with them. This dispute involves all the public services in Ireland, including schools and hospitals. #IFUT #IndustrialAction #IrishFederationOfUniversityTeachers #StrikeAction

telescoper.blog
## Equinox – John Coltrane Walking back from lunch just now I suddenly remembered the significance of today’s date. Today is the 100th anniversary of the birth of the great John Coltrane, who was born on 23rd September 1926 in Hamlet, North Carolina. I won’t attempt to do a full tribute to Trane, whose influence on jazz saxophone playing, and jazz in general, is incalculable. I will, however, take advantage of the fact that today is the day of the Autumnal Equinox to post one of my favourite tracks by him. This was recorded on 1960 and originally released on the album _Coltrane’s Sound_ which came out in 1964. The line-up is John Coltrane (tenor sax), McCoy Tyner (piano), Elvin Jones (drums) and Steve Davis (bass). It’s a gently swinging contemplative and very atmospheric blues in C♯ minor called, appropriately enough for today, _Equinox_. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5m2HN2y0yV8 #ElvinJones #Equinox #JohnColtrane #McCoyTyner #SteveDavis

## Autumnal Equinox 2026 Today is a very busy teaching day, so I just have time to post a quick note to say that the Autumnal Equinox (in the Northern Hemisphere) takes place in the early hours of tomorrow morning, Wednesday 23rd September 2026, at 01:05 Irish Time (00:05 UTC). I don’t intend to be awake then, so I’m posting this now. Of course the Equinox will be later today rather than tomorrow for some of you, depending on your time zone. Of course for those of you in the Southern Hemisphere it will be the Spring (or Vernal) Equinox. Although the term `equinox’ refers to a situation in which day and night are of equal length, which implies that it’s a day rather than a specific time, the astronomical equinox is more accurately defined by a specific event, i.e. when the plane defined by Earth’s equator passes through the centre of the Sun’s disk (or, if you prefer, when the centre of the Sun passes through the plane defined by Earth’s equator). Day and night are not necessarily exactly equal on the equinox, but they’re the closest they get. From now on days in the Northern hemisphere will be shorter than nights and they’ll get shorter still until the Winter Solstice on Monday 21st December 2026 at 11.50 pm Irish Time. Many people take the autumnal equinox to be the end of summer. There is a saying around these parts, however, that `Summer is Summer to Michaelmas Day’ (September 29th), which is not until next week. The weather has indeed been very nice in Maynooth for the first couple of days of term… #AutumnalEquinox #TheRapture
