Automerge also is of course a different document format so there would need to be a sort of a migration of course too.

Alright no problem. I would suggest though that if you really do want encryption later that it is very important that you treat the content on the server as though it were encrypted. Because once you do move to an encrypted system you will not have the luxury of reading the data in clear text

Encryption is a very hard thing to get right. Sorry for not responding to your issue. I’ve been working through some major architectural stuff for this project. You’ll be happy to know that I’ve recently made encryption the default. Offer still stands on if you want to meet!

I would be happy to meet to discuss this! I have been working on a lot of things recently, but, I believe the core of it to be pretty stable. I would be interested to hear what parts interest you

feat: content-level encryption for Y.js updates by nperez0111 · Pull Request #76 · nperez0111/teleportal
Replaces the snapshot + Lamport-clock E2EE model with content-level encryption: CRDT metadata (client IDs, clocks, origins, parent refs, delete sets) stays in plaintext as a valid Y.js update while...

This significantly improves the viability of making E2EE the default in Teleportal (unsure whether I would expose the document content on the server in cleartext or force them to decrypt it if they want it there). But, this is a huge improvement on the project

But, I had an idea, what if we could keep CRDT metadata in cleartext, but just extract & encrypt the content of the document? I tried it out, and it works! CRDT metadata reveals nothing very useful (lamport timestamps & general structure of the doc), but allows us to compact the CRDT on the server

Working on something pretty exciting. Teleportal had an experimental E2EE mode for sharing updates to documents. It was essentially encrypt(update) -> server -> decrypt(update), using the server only for storage. This worked, but required different storage & awkward compaction of updates

I've not implemented a verification system to validate whether a snapshot was made correctly, but a client who sees all previous messages should be able to validate that a document snapshot was made correctly

Working on a new version of the E2EE protocol for synchronizing document updates between users. This one does compaction of documents with snapshots made by clients. Should make E2EE documents much smaller, and faster to sync

Worked hard on getting this to have so few dependencies: npmx.dev/teleportal
npmx.dev
teleportal - npmx
A storage, transport & runtime agnostic Y.js server/provider. Built on web primitives, supports subdocs, and handles everything without in-memory storage. Perfect for collaborative apps! 🚀
