Rare night shining silvery wisps of night shining noctilucent clouds visible just now above Teignmouth, Devon. They're unusual because they are so high (around 80km above ground). They're only occasionally seen a month or two either side of the summer solstice latitudes 50-70°.
Silvery wisps of noctilucent clouds are visible and appear to glow across the darkening sky an hour after sunset above Teignmouth

Thousands of Moon Jellyfish (Aurelia aurita) stranded on the beach in Teignmouth today. More than I've ever see

Really looking forward to being interviewed on stage at the Dartmoor Tors Festival in Ashburton 6pm tonight & offering a rare insight into how we (Beltane Border Morris) embed the spirit of Dartmoor into our wild & 🔥 performance. Still a few tickets left! dartmoortorsfestival.co.uk/beltane-bord...

Like many of you, I've always been fascinated by eclipses. Here's an image of this morning's partial solar eclipse viewed from #Teignmouth #Devon shortly after 11am
Partial solar eclipse projected through binoculars onto a piece of cardboard. The shadow of the binoculars are visible with a roughly 30 percent eclipsed suns looking like two bright eyes.

Ordinarily there are more air frosts here in Teignmouth in Feb than Mar. The long term average is 3 in Feb & 1.2 in March. That's 'climate' - the average of the weather. But this year's weather has been somewhat different with 0 in Feb & 3 already in Mar with more in prospect tonight & tomorrow!
Graph showing air temperature between 1st Feb and 3rd March 2025. The temperature remained above zero right through Feb but dipped below freezing on each of the first 3 days in March.

A great example of a fascinating natural phenomenon! For those not familiar with it, to form it needs a combination of damp air just below 0C, wet rotting wood from a broadleaf tree, and a specific fungus!

I've always been fascinated by ✈️ & gazing up the Teign estuary at lunchtime saw an RAF Airbus A400M Atlas fly directly overhead & mulled over its route. Thankfully FlightRadar helped me out! Aircraft often seem to follow the estuary & turn at the Point here in Teignmouth

Pleasant surprise just now seeing a bumblebee busily feasting on my winter flowering sweet box (sarcococca confusa) with an air temp of just 7.3C!

Rough seas this afternoon in Teignmouth during #StormHerminia . My barograph trace shows the impressive drop in air pressure this morning. 31mm in my rain gauge today so far, that's a third of January's mean rainfall!

The relatively calm centre of #StormDarragh captured well on the latest radar sequence ('L').. things will change there today though as winds increase, and the NW gales continue to pound the W and SW of the UK

The calm before #StormDarragh arrives later on. Yellow & amber Met Office wind warnings from mid-afternoon through until Sunday morning with gusts to 80mph expected on exposed coasts. Take care

"Red sky in the morning, shepherd's warning!" Today's forecast here in Devon: A bright start with some sunshine and feeling milder than yesterday. Skies will become increasingly cloudy around lunchtime with wind and rain expected later, becoming heavy by early evening
A beautiful sunrise here in Teignmouth. Buildings are silhouetted black, beyond you can just see the sea with the tower of St Michael's church just reaching above the horizon.. Above the sky grades from a bright rich orange through red to purple.

This morning I've mostly been watching our resident female blackcap ignoring high winds & rain guarding our pyracantha by chasing off any bird that dares get near the precious berries!

Thoroughly enjoyed dancing with Beltane Border Morris at @rammuseum.bsky.social tonight as part of their exhibition Dartmoor: A Radical Landscape. Morris sides are often influenced by their surroundings and their members and we've loved embedding the spirit of Dartmoor into much of our repertoire.

In 1889 Royal Meteorological Society fellow GW Ormerod spotted a mirage in Teignmouth. 135 years later I (also a FRMetS) describe one I saw today. From l to r it's Ore (Oar) & Lead Stone & Hopes Nose. All look elevated & caused by light bending as it passes through layers of air with different temps
View from sea front in Teignmouth towards Hopes Nose in Torquay. You can see the Lead Stone and larger Ore Stone islands appearing elevated by a mirage. Even Hopes Nose appears slightly elevated above sea levelHistoric report dated 2nd February 1889 in British Rainfall describing a mirage that George Wareing Ormerod saw from his home, Woodway House, Teignmouth. It reads "Teignmouth, Woodway (V). At noon Oar Stone Rock, and the
sea off Hope's Nose were visible from the upper windows above the
trees, by which they are usually hidden. At 1 p.m. the rock was
again hidden. It must have been raised by mirage about 30ft.
H and sleet showers fell about 1 p.m"

First grass (-1.7C) and air frost (-0.2C) of this 'winter season' this morning here in #Teignmouth #Devon. Graphs below show how temperatures have suddenly stepped down a big notch! Chance of further frosts over the next 2 or 3 nights before the milder air looks set to move back in over the weekend
Two graph showing the weather conditions over the past month. The first shows air temperature where up until this morning the temperature has mostly remained above 10C but plummeted to -0.2C. The lower graph shows grass temperature and again has been mostly well above freezing but dipped to -1.7C this morning

As I love a bit of an adventure I only let myself buy the bi-monthly Dartmoor News if I've bought it on Dartmoor & travelled there by bus or train or under my own steam!! So today I caught the early train, then an idyllic autumn cycle up the Wray Valley Trail to Lustleigh! Mission accomplished!

Besides the dark green holly bushes on the left, the rest of the picture is full of trees in the rich autumn colours of yellow, gold, orange and red.Lustleigh Church tower bathed in autumnal morning sunlight. The clock is showing a little after 10am.
