My favourite nerd triple threat continues: 1. Listen to podcast about a vintage film. 2. Watch the vintage film. 3. Acquired the vintage book. Bonus pic of the back of Four Sided Triangle because it’s truly glorious.

Front cover of a well loved paperback of Alternative 3 by Leslie Watkins, based on the television film by David Ambrose and Christopher Miles. It’s vivid blue and the title is an enormous red number 3 outlined in yellow. Text above the 3 says “LIFE ON EARTH IS DOOMED. THE SUPER-POWER GOVERNMENTS HAVE A PLAN TO PRESERVE A TINY NUCLEUS OF HUMAN SURVIVORS. IT IS TOP SECRET-AND TERRIFYING.” Underneath the 3 it says “THE HORRIFYING FULL STORY BEHIND THE EXPLOSIVE TV DOCUMENTARY.”

Front cover of a vintage 1951 Galaxy Science Fiction edition of William F. Temple’s Four Sided Triangle. It has a red cover featuring two identical portraits of a blonde woman arranged within geometric cream panels. Large black text gives the title and author, while a bookseller’s $10.40 price label partially covers the top left.

Back cover of the Four Sided Triangle book, showing an aged cream page headed “Pre-Publication Offer.” The advertisement promotes a subscription to Galaxy Science Fiction together with The Anthology of Galaxy Science Fiction, with a mail-order form for Galaxy Publishing Corp. at the bottom.

Appalled at myself! Two days into spooky season and I’ve only just remembered to make my handle seasonal. I feel like I’ve now righted a wrong. Tricksy or treaty? 👻 🦇 🧙‍♀️ 🧛‍♂️ 🧟‍♀️

Today begins my ultimate comfort rewatch marathon: all of Sharpe and all of Hornblower. “It’ll be bugles, battles, and bags of glory. Stick with me, Richard. I’ll see you right.” “You’ll see me dead, sir.” “That’s my boy!”

Still from Sharpe, showing Richard Sharpe, played by Sean Bean, standing beside a field cannon on a battlefield. He wears the dark green uniform of a British rifleman and holds a sword, while ranks of red-coated British soldiers stand behind him.

Still from Hornblower, showing Horatio Hornblower, played by Ioan Gruffudd, seated among the rigging of a sailing ship. He wears a dark Royal Navy uniform with brass buttons and a high white collar, looking directly ahead with a calm, serious expression.

Lore (2023) was basically adult Are You Afraid Of The Dark? and I was so ok with that. The Ice Storm (1997) was utterly engrossing and very uncomfortable in places (deliberately so), but a wonderful plethora of baby-faced stars. #LastFourWatched #LetterboxdFriday

My Letterboxd recent activity, showing the last four films I watched: 1970's The House That Would Not Die (I rated it 2.5/5), 2023's Lore (I rated it 3.5/5), 1945's Fog Island (I rated it 2/5) and 1997's The Ice Storm (I rated it 4/5).

William Castle got me hard with Homicidal (1961). Not with the twist, per se, but with Joan Marshall herself. Bloody hell, girl. Amazing. Having her take a bow for the audience at the end was so justified. Added a whole star just for her performance(s). #LastFourWatched #LetterboxdFriday

I’ve made another new friend. This time by the pond at work. I have named it Newtfriend, because I am highly original and witty. Please say hello to Newtfriend and enjoy imagining me crouched right down and looking like I’m taking close up pictures of the pavement. At work.

Close-up of a small, dark newt on the rough, grey gravel of a pavement that’s scattered with tiny pieces of bark and twigs. The newt has a blackish/dark grey body, short legs splayed out from its sides, a and long tapering tail. Its colouring helps it blend in very closely with the pavement below.

A surprise Karl Urban in Y2K peak vibes movie The Irrefutable Truth About Demons (2000) and a surprisingly involving thriller involving tennis with Islands (2025). The other two epitomise “mid”. #LastFourWatched #LetterboxdFriday

Rather fitting that Kolchak achieves my 200th horror and 100th classic film of the year. Enjoyed The Night Strangler (1973) just as much as The Night Stalker (1972). Caught myself smiling ear to ear at one point. Time to buy the series, methinks.

Illustrated poster for The Night Strangler (1973), featuring a large, brooding portrait of Darren McGavin as Kolchak in his trademark straw hat and suit over the Seattle skyline with the Space Needle visible. In the foreground, a woman in a red belly-dancing costume holds small cymbals. Text reads “Darren McGavin – The Night Strangler” and “Directed by Dan Curtis.”

Illustrated film poster for Kolchak: The Night Stalker (1972), showing Kolchak in his trademark straw hat and light-coloured suit holding a glowing white cross aloft. He is surrounded by an array of supernatural monsters, including snarling werewolves, a mummy, demonic creatures and goblin-like figures emerging from a dark, fiery background.

Finally watching Madhouse (1974). 90mins of Vincent Price parodying himself, a sprinkling of Peter Cushing, madcap deaths that rival Dr Phibes, a barmy spider lady, and Michael Parkinson. Cloaks, candelabra, soliloquising, and everything on fire. Joy! Plus I feel smart because I figured it out 🤣

Still from the 1974 horror film Madhouse, showing Vincent Price on the left and Peter Cushing on the right, both dressed in formal black evening wear and theatrical horror makeup. Price wears a black cape and dark, skull-like facial makeup, while Cushing has vampire-like pale skin, slicked-back grey hair and fake blood around his mouth. Red curtains, plants and a large glowing lamp fill the background.

Kiss Of The Vampire (1963) took the decadence of Hammer gothic and really did something different. The idea of vampires almost being frightened cult members who gaslight families of new members/victims, rather than just killing them, was refreshingly subversive. #LastFourWatched #LetterboxdFriday
