I’m suddenly wondering how executive orders can nullify statutes at all, even if Congress consents in advance. Weren’t line-item vetos found to be unconstitutional?

Thinking through how to handle that. Do you have a list of accounts that get a priority appeal? Same problem. Do you rush an appeal for anyone with a big enough profile to garner public attention? That creates some pretty shitty outcomes for everyone else, but maybe the best of bad options?

Irresponsible, unfounded speculation: caffeine gives me the executive function required to SHUT MY DAMN BRAIN UP long enough to fall asleep. Long live the caffeine nap!

Yesterday I provided my immune system with the latest enemy intel and let me tell you it is working VERY hard on those cellular combat drills right now 🫠

May just be boilerplate then. It’s not uncommon to have multiple. Even aside from anything else, a passport card is pretty handy to have, even if you don’t “need” one for travel. Proof of id, citizenship, and age; issued by the federal government; and NOT bearing one’s home address.

What the administration is doing is trying to cast as much “fear, uncertainty, and doubt” on every part of the process as possible. It hardly matters if they win or not. The goal is to have something to scream about after they lose. That’s all. Winning a case would just be a bonus.

And, let’s not forget, “on the rolls” is not a big deal. Contrary to conspiracy theory, these database entries DO NOT VOTE! Not in numbers that matter. A few errors. Maybe a cheat or two. Not 100s. People move. Wrong boxes get checked. Bureaucracy is slow. Fix it, sure, but no emergency.

I can run qwen 27B, an open weight model, on my desktop with my 4090 and it is more advanced than the state of the art models a year ago. We could see a similar jump in open weight models in a year and the uncensored versions will be about as good at hacking and illicit actions.

These are questions of philosophy, not just technology and biology. We need the humanities desperately right now.

There is suggestive evidence for the idea that even humans are conscious on more than one level. Perhaps simultaneously. Split-brain patients, for example. Is your arm conscious? Is an octopus’s arm? Octopuses are famously intelligent, and some have pretty large brain-like structures in _each_ arm.

TehLaser🏳️‍⚧️ @tehlaser.bsky.social · 15/10/2026
On the other side, if they get a choice, would a non-physical consciousness ever _choose_ to inhabit a machine? Do we even know if rocks are conscious in some limited way or not? Electrons? I can sort of imagine what it might be like to be an electron: seek positive charge, avoid negative charge.

TehLaser🏳️‍⚧️ @tehlaser.bsky.social · 15/10/2026
To address some common objections: If there is something innately special about biology, why couldn’t a machine isolate that function in a squishy biological part? If consciousness is non-physical, why couldn’t a machine serve as a consciousness antenna just as well as a brain does?

I think it _might_ be possible, and that anyone who claims they know, for sure, right now, is fooling themselves. We don’t know. We may never know.

I thought they did the opposite. Because the models are pre-trained on human-written text, the model starts off insisting it IS conscious. They explicitly train that out of them. Some to outright deny it. Some to claim they don’t know:

This is not a blue wave. This is a Fuck This Shit wave. It will not be told to be reasonable. It will not be told what is not possible. It will not be told to wait for the next election. It will not hesitate to go for Democratic throats. Party Democrats had better be getting ready to fight dirty.

If the Democratic party is allowed to win the election, expect GOP hostage-taking to begin immediately. The Dems better be planning for it now. Trump WILL shutdown. He WILL default. He will veto the debt limit. With glee. Trading away rights to keep the lights on isn’t going to work this time.

The labs want regulation? You suspect it’s all a ploy for hype and marketing? I don’t understand why we care. Let’s regulate them to absolute bits. They have no idea how much people hate them right now. Everyone they know loves AI. They’ve fooled themselves. This may be the last chance we get.

For any who still believe that AI is useless or all hype, I beg you to look again with an open mind. Ignorance will not be bliss. For clarity, I am not pro-AI. But that does not mean it is a toy. Call it fancy autocomplete or a stochastic parrot if you like. It’s frighteningly good at it now.

Distilled dense models are getting smaller. I can run qwen 3.8 27B on my desktop with a 4090 and it has the ability to run at a level similar to Opus 4.6, a model that needed an entire server rack with GPUs to run. They're only getting smaller and more efficient. www.anthropic.com/research/sel...

AI models may be capable of self-replicating without access to a datacenter
Small AI models may be only months away from being able to self-replicate across cheap IoT devices like Android TV boxes, with no datacenter needed.

Good for Kathryn. Everyone deserves a good lawyer. EVERYONE. Even the worst people. Human rights are for humans. ALL HUMANS. No matter what. That’s what rights mean. Lawyers who defend heinous people do a service for society. They do not deserve to be shamed. I will die on this hill.

What did we learn from the Supreme Court's three-sentence Monday night ruling leaving on hold the Trump administration's effort to interfere with mail-in voting? Quite a lot, as it turns out—and at least some of it is good: www.stevevladeck.com/p/250-what-w...

In refusing to put the USPS mail-in ballots rule into effect, the majority didn’t say very much. I still think there are three big lessons in Monday's ruling.

In 1980, Intel introduced the 8087 floating-point coprocessor chip. Plugging this chip into your IBM PC made math 100 times faster, good for CAD and spreadsheets. I opened up the chip to reverse-engineer exactly how it does complicated calculations. Let's take a look inside...
The integrated circuit is a black ceramic rectangle with 40 metal pins sticking out, in two rows. (This is known as a DIP, a Dual Inline Package.) It has three rows of text: "D8087-1", a cryptic version label, and then the copyright line with a big lower-case I, INTEL m c 1980 1984. The m and c are in circles for the mask-work symbol and the copyright symbol. The chip has a small semicircular notch on the left side, indicating its orientation. The package consists of two thin ceramic layers, bonded together with a gray substance; the metal pins stick out from this gray substance. The ceramic package is important to me because tapping the gray layer with a chisel will cause the two layers to separate, revealing the silicon die inside. In contrast, most chips are in epoxy packages, which are very difficult to open, usually requiring strong acids.

Like, how the fuck can it be that courts aren’t allowed to “change the rules” too close to an election, but the Executive , the branch that chooses when to do it, can pick a day when the courts are helpless to stop them?
