I often think that the Principal of Charity would be invaluable for people to have productive discussions online (or generally) Unfortunately, social media generally reward doing the opposite of all of these with more engagement
Text from Wikipedia:

Since the time of Quine, other philosophers[who?] have formulated at least four versions of the principle of charity. These alternatives may conflict with one another, so which principle to use may depend on the goal of the conversation. The four principles are:

The other uses words in the ordinary way;
The other makes true statements;
The other makes valid arguments;
The other says something interesting.

I think the issue was not clarity but rather making so many citations it felt like a literature review with some conjecture thrown in to connect one citation to the next

Yeah I'm pretty sure the assembly was just like "something bad has happened" like I don't know what the head teacher would say to a bunch of ten year olds lol

I was in primary school and wasn't sent home, but I remember having a big assembly with the headteacher because of it

I think of this 1930 poem so often. Of course it applies to more than british journalists.
A poem from Humbert Wolfe:

Epigram: British Journalist

"You cannot hope to bribe or twist
(thank God!) the British journalist.
But, seeing what the man will do
unbribed, there's no occasion to."

"To get properly Hegelian about it, Fukuyama and Jäger are thesis and antithesis; the synthesis is what’s especially juicy." When they say they're getting "properly Hegelian" and you look and it's just Fichte instead. (thesis/antithesis/synthesis is not Hegel)

Falls short of the page count but One-Dimensional Man Chapter 3: The Conquest of the Unhappy Consciousness: Repressive Desublimation is accessible, relevant and challenging imo. It's fun to discuss whether contemporary texts are examples or repressive desublimation or not

I wanted to agree but the things he links seemed to have nothing to do with the Moncrieff book lol. Like they're about the dangers of going cold turkey on antidepressants which Moncrieff agrees with? Weird

It's pretty embarrassing when even Alastair Campbell had the sense to realise he shouldn't contribute to a media pile-on, yet an aspiring left wing media outlet didn't

Strictly speaking as well surely "Woke 1.0" should refer to its use by African Americans in the early 20th century (and earlier) such as leadbelly, who used it in the context of telling other African Americans to stay vigilant against racial injustice and persecution.

It would be useful if they added their first name as a prefix. Hypothetically someone named "Anna" would name their website "Anna's archive". For example. Hypothetically.

Where does Oates say that Emily Wilson criticised Nolan for being unfaithful to the original text lol? She is saying that Wilson's response to Nolan's interpretation of Homer has a superior and dismissive tone instead of collegial

The funniest bit was when she complained that the trojan horse was poorly-designed because it had no wheels. Yes, that's a choice Nolan made. Like what are we doing here?

Reality: www.rusi.org/explore-our-... "In the UK and broader European context, defence spending is not an effective route to jobs, growth or the economic security of working people. As a result, any arguments for increased defence spending should not dwell on the purported economic benefits. "

The False Promise of Defence as Prosperity
Framing defence spending as a path to prosperity ignores its poor economic returns, limited job creation, and the opportunity costs of not making alternative public investments.

Not my field, but I think about the fashion chapter "Dress as an Expression of the Pecuniary Culture" from Veblen's Theory of the Leisure Class. Especially the passage about having your servants dress in cumbersome clothing as a signifier of how much wealth you have to dispose of

I do find the Christian debates over astrology fascinating. I think it's there that Aquinas argues that astrology is fine as long as you accept that it's angels who are positioning the stars and therefore astrological knowledge isn't heretical? I kind of love that type of reasoning
