please look at the first bloom of my dracaena

Photo of my yellow-and-brindle dracaena plant, crispy around the edges from too much direct sun, and my fingers dwarfed by its delicate, pale flowers extending from a massive stem. Several flower clusters remain as buds.

we've finally gone on holiday

A reversed phone-cam selfie of me on a sofa at my inlaws' place where we spent the night, with orange cat Sixten played out on top of me. With a mix of insistent gratitude, frustration and affection, he has placed both paws on my jowls, framing my smiling face as if to shake me awake, kiss me, or perchance to slay me through strangulation.

I also really love this cockatrice from one of Friedrich Bertuch many Kinderbücher (kid books!) in the 1800s. I don't know if he actually illustrated them himself, but Wikipedia accredits him this one.

Vasnetsov is back with his most famous Knight at the Crossroads (1882), Henry Singleton with the popular motif of Ariel on a Bat's Back (1819) (compare it to Fuseli's!), and the super charming The Dance of the Rats (~1690s) from Ferdinand van Kessel!

I was postulating this might be a Böcklin detail, or even a less trippy than average Beksiński, but tis in fact a very sombre-looking piece by Wolf Antonín Raimund, new to me, titled simply Alpská Krajina II. Credited to 1892.

I thought the cherubs at the top of the ceiling were a hooded chandelier so at first I thought this was another from my favourite scary lamps guy! But it's an unknown artist from Antwerp doing yet another Adoration of the Shepherds.

Vasnetsov again, this time with a much more vivid painting depicting Dobrynya Nikitich--a popular hero from Slavic folklore--locked in combat with the dragon (zmey) Gorynych. Credited to have been made some time during the 1910s.

My favourite pastime in videogames: identifying real paintings! Here's Vasnetsov's В раздумье or, less succinctly, Витязь на коне въезжает в дремучий бор. Credited to have been made ~1880.

[food] a strong contender for worst-looking soup in the world, this onion soup with thyme, dijon, beer and cheddar is *incredible* -- save for the fact that my dry yellow peas expired *eight years ago* and simply refused to be finished cooking despite a 48 hour water bath and 2 hours of boiling.

[alcohol] also made a little bastard paloma, as a treat. dusting the next one with tajin.

A paloma cocktail; made with actual grapefruit juice rather than some kind of soda, it's a delicate, almost peach hue instead of traditional bright pink. Ice, lime slices and a sprig of green mint all float with some confusion on the surface.
