Don't forget the genre that, to me, stands as Neil's finest achievement. www.youtube.com/watch?v=EqO5...

And Lost's ending is perfectly fine; it's just the whole last season was dull, and the audience was so primed to be disappointed, they invented reasons to be. (The show explicitly says "You came here after dying on the island," and multiple people later were like "So they were dead on the island?!")

Breaking Bad stuck the landing?! Walt gets revenge on the nerd who cucked him, sets up his family for life, magic-sciences mass murder (but it's Nazis so it's fine), teleports past cops to be semi-forgiven by his wife, saves Jesse, dies happy instead of slowly. Everything he did was worth it; he won

I certainly would never say it's good a man died young, but there's alternate timelines were Bill Hicks is the worst person anyone can think of.

Carlin actually sucked a lot (his last handful of specials are not great at all, not even to mention the sitcom) but he responded to critics by shrugging and going "Fuck that, I disagree with your take," and not thinking about it any more and it turns out that's a useful skill!

This image is... not a good representation of AI slop, at least in my mind? AI slop sucks. Baffling, vaguely eerie nonsense that would never fool anyone and isn't intended to is, like, the only good thing AI does.

Which version has interminable mood shots of like the clouds moving super-fast and basically an entire music video and the extended scene where we're supposed to laugh at a fat girl dancing? Because I sure hated whichever that was.

Short answer yes, but only if you're a weirdo already. As a kid I loved the ultra-formula Sailormoon, but what drew me in was the bizarre Lynchian influence on the edges. Mostly pap, but as I got older, it led me to seek out the interesting rather than the comforting. There's usually something.

I had a blast with it, but I admit the greatest moment was due to a bug: immediately after a dramatic scene where I talk someone down from murder, we drive off to talk about choosing compassion and forgiveness and on the way we just run someone the fuck over and keep driving.

Every Disney Afternoon theme is fire. Every one. Bonkers. Duck Tales. Gummi Bears. TaleSpin. Rascue Rangers. (And it's actually really important, because 80s cartoons were largely in a dire state and these themes signaled pay attention we're putting money into this.)

It's because he was in a coma for years and so is neurotically terrified of sleep, but also he's a mensch and doesn't want to be a bummer so he expresses it through gusto and positivity.

Judging by the inclusion of Breaking Bad, Lost, Game of Thrones, and probably many others, they tacitly made the wise decision to just ignore last seasons.

They couldn't let kids shows in, because too many of the good ones have extremely toxic fanbases that make them in retrospect impossible to judge.

North Carolina: the state where the governor has complete power and voting is notoriously fair, and therefore the only explanation for regressive policies is supporting insufficiently leftist democrats.

This is the only thing I'd quibble with, because antifandom really did grope for any hint of the problematic as excuse to be sadistic (and usually sexist) to plenty of niche celebrities. Maybe Matt Stencil's absorbed all of that onto himself, now, though.

I was so irritated by the "Harry wins over his mean adopted family by being born genetically superior to them" that I stopped two chapters in. From what I've seen, she never did solve the muggle problem.

My theory is GenX never adapted to the parental role. When the boomers started having kids, culture became about having kids. The forgotten GenX had nothing softening the transition to "these younger people think I'm racist, what the fuck?"

This frees up Batman and Joker to be fun comic book antagonists, while simultaneously giving us a reasonably psychologically dense tragic hero story.

tedthefed.bsky.social @tedthefed.bsky.social · 29/07/2026
The thing about 2 is, in terms of the structure of the narrative, Batman isn't actually the protagonist. Two-Face is. Batman and Joker are foils to Two-Face, representative of his inner struggle.

I'm right and everyone else is wrong when I was the only person in the theater laughing uncontrollably after the line "So the rumors were true. Our civilization IS dying!"
130
tedthefed.bsky.social @tedthefed.bsky.social · 28/07/2026
It's easy! A well-made movie that flounders thematically and has some terrible dialogue ("So the rumors were true. Our civilization IS collapsing!"), but should be graded on a curve because it somehow manages to tell a coherent, focused story from its scattered source material.
000
tedthefed.bsky.social @tedthefed.bsky.social · 28/07/2026
Was it about what a goddamn professional Anne Hathaway is for having to try to act dialogue like "So the rumors were true. Our civilization IS collapsing!"? That's all anyone should be talking about.

As batshit as Jon Haidt is, his moral foundations has one insight: people on the right, who tend to be intolerant of moral complexity, tend to have contradictory values and thus get into dilemmas more often. What fascism supplies is relief from this.

They can't help but respect expertise, even as they loathe it. Which means experts can hurt their feelings but they also want to do the opposite of what experts say. Therefore, experts must be forced by law to never think they're doing anything stupid.

I think it's more a sign of how internet sophistry became actual thought. You can't argue you're not immoral, so you change the subject to make an attack. Problem is, people did and saw this so much, they started actually THINKING that way.

"Wokeness" is simply morally correct (even to most conservatives, who also hate it) and that's actually the problem: it makes the right feel threatened and bullied. Which in turn makes the left look condescending for daring to have morally good values.

Stupidity (or narcissism) + Luck has ALWAYS been the recipe for the most unusually successful people, because being unusually successful requires you to make foolish risks that happen to pay off. We've just reached the point these people have become the entire economy.

Also, all of these people, if you ask them, will say they're "moderate," and that's not because they're hungering for a truly moderate choice, it's because they don't want to have to answer specific followup questions.

Well sure; the alternative is the greatest sin a person can commit: calling a person's belief sexist or racist.

tedthefed.bsky.social @tedthefed.bsky.social · 26/03/2026
I think this is a little unfair; I read it as genuine moral discomfort about two wrongs making a right, not a strategic play. This doesn't change your conclusion, but it does show why it's such a hard hump to get over.

True story: When I was interviewed for a position at UPenn, we were chatting about her, and a professor said, "She knows her worth." "Yes," I mused, "a duck." The subsequent ten-second long silence suggested I was perhaps not a good fit at The Happiness Institute.
