That account was hacked in 2017. Note the last time I posted. I'm not on fb save for a "Teddy Kahn" page which seems to be overlapped w/ someone else's page. Not me, yet i have the password. I just opened it and zero friends. I gave up on fb.

That is not me and I just tried to create a fb account and it reset to someone else. My original fb account was hacked and fb kicked me off after my ex hacked that too. What is the name on the account, don't send a link, what name.?

Here are two interesting venomous snakes I found in a herpetologically unexplored part of Colombia back in 2011 on a Cartel cocaine smuggling route #TBT Bothriechis supraciliaris (Taylor, 1954).🐍 No good pic's of the blue one, but you can imagine.

Nerds! PSA FYI🐸the reason poison arrow frogs was used for these frogs firstly is cause "arrows" were also considered darts when discovered in 1841; the language then considered arrow=darts. Poison Dart Frog presumes the frogs have darts; untrue. Hence, Dart Poison Frog is the correct vernacular.

They are not hard to find. It's the habitat loss that threatens them along w/ commercial poaching. But yea, there are plenty within their range; far larger than IUCN maps X five or 6 times larger. (see Kahn et al., 2016).

It is fun. Nature is healing and snakes of all animals (we see many more other creatures) tend to lend themselves to confidence & outside as a safe space is empowering. We used to take homeless inner city kids to camp (two-weeks) but they sold the camp & we all got our educations-so did our kids!

I do #transtrips. I take non-binary; often autistic/disabled people outside herping. Here is my nephew/niece Mave in what I'd call a state of adoration upon finding & interacting w/ their first L. t. triangulum (Lacépéde, 1789). 29th April 26 my buddy Chuck & I found him again four-yrs. later, same🐍

Before iNat was a thing, Scott was told to visit me here in DC and consult. I told Scott to enable hiding geolocation for sensitive/vulnerable to poaching species & have actual experts for each taxa verify everything or it would not work. Scott spent two-days here & he implemented each. Blame me😁

Hey Tom, I'm Ted. DC-based retired herpetologist etc., yet still actively herping and publishing... Over the decades I have many recaptures. It is super fun to find a snake and then see it again four-5-10-yrs. later. Here is one of many recaptures (I had a four-yr. recapture a few weeks ago). Enjoy.

Happy #snakesaturday! Some Red Ratsnakes, Pantherophis guttatus (Linnaeus, 1766). Rare and/or state endangered in their northernmost range; MD, DEL and NJ. If you know where to look and when to look they can still be found. It's their mating season up here.🐍 Many get run over by cars😔💔

Ted R. Kahn @tedrkahn.bsky.social · 16/05/2026
LC LOL! They are so endangered that even captive born and bred babies require a federal permit to cross state lines. A federal permit is required to even have one. They are state listed everywhere as EN or CR. How are you doing? Hope well.

Many snakes from the very-high-elevation equatorial Andes to the high-latitude of Canada are cold wet tolerant & active in those conditions. Here is proof; ~9 degree Celsius at ~2400 meters elevation. I give you Cata in Colombia & an Erythrolamprus. Amazing, perhaps unexpected huh? Pic by me🐍

#toadtuesday. Not sure of their current nomenclature. They were from my time spent in the Brazilian Atlantic fragmented forests "Mata Atlântica, Brasil". Very large & very cool toads. Big shout out to Conservation International for funding my work there & all the friends I met & made there💚🐸

#timberrattlesnaktuesday. "Mouse". A nearly 5-foot "Gold" Timber Rattlesnake, Crotalus horridus Linnaeus, 1758 that visits our compound in Shenandoah Co. VA in GWNF inholding. He's never bothered anyone in decades; he just spends a month each year under some of our buildings eating mice. He's good.🐍

10-yrs. ago I suggested to Steve, John & his wife and James and a few trusted others "let's go find the ultra-rare 'Day-glow' magenta mole king snake". A site now cleaned-up-no more AC study transect. W/O AC and if you are very skilled you might have a few days in a year to find them on the crawl.🐍

Lampropeltis rhombomaculata. Pic credit J. Lee (but I found the snake & showed him the site). The habitat is now a Royal Farms gas station parking lot. I moved 2-pairs, females gravid to a nearby safe place that won't be developed w/ MD-DNR permission. Makes me want to listen to Rush "subdivisions"🐍

Kevin Enge discovered this so-called "Mosaic Eastern Kingsnake" Lampropeltis g. getula (Linnaeus, 1766) on an island off Georgia, USA (in the 1980's). A few years ago (2022?) a friend found & took this pic on the mainland 11 walking miles from any paved rd. in North Carolina of a "Mosaic" king.🐍

Missed #snakesaturday so #snakesunday! Enjoy a Washington, DC native, Den#1; it's going to be a long & productive Spring season methinks. Northern Copperhead (venomous), yet generally inofensive in daylight, at night, not so much & may be fussy. Also a scansorial🐍; a fancy word for semi-arboreal.
