I'm not delighted that I'm back to having Powerpoint-related nightmares. I'm trying to setup the AV equipment for class and it doesn't work. Keep waking up in a state of terror. Added points for hosting a guest lecturer who hadn't emailed their slides in advance. My subconscious is trolling me.

Good example, but games are already pretty ok with off-brand reproductions in many ways, as long as key elements such as characters and music are not reproduced exactly. This subject will get litigated regardless, we're in for a fun ride.

Indeed! I've suspected for a while that if the case had been argued better by the defendants it may have had a different outcome, they relied almost entirely on the charts not having any protection because of lack of originality.

Recreating Adobe: AI and the limits of software copyright
There's been a fascinating story brewing in software developing which has exploded into my social timelines in the last few days. A creative suite called ArtCraft has been making headlines in software circles as it is an open source, lightweight version of more expensive commercial software, particularly the Adobe creative suite which includes programs like Photoshop. The noise has been prompted by how this suite came into being.

Saw it, I'm writing a blog post about it, but I think all of this will end up in court.

I'm writing a blogpost about this today, hopefully out a bit later or tomorrow. The short answer is that it may depend on what is going on in the background, my hunch is that this will go to court and we'll have to sort out decompilation.

I actually met Aaron as he was collaborating with Creative Commons, and we coincided at several events. I can vouch for the fact sure that he was passionately anti-copyright and pro openness, whenever I see his name used in this way my blood boils.

The answer is yes, and they have been tested with various results, I'm thinking of SAS, there was a non-code reverse engineering, so the licence did not apply. Also good to remember that some reverse engineering is expected and permitted for all sorts of legitimate uses.

I think it's infringement in the end, but this doesn't fit neatly with existing cases, courts will have to chart the derivative process.

Journals use 2 blind peer-reviewers, you get a round of comments, reply and correct the paper if needed, the reviewers answer accepting or rejecting changes, publication follows.

I still read lots of papers, but I sometimes need help finding and sorting out what to read, so I use both ChatGPT and Gemini to identify papers and new developments for me, I've never had a research assistant so now AI is mine. This term I'm using Claude for fun class videos.

Oh it's gotten very good at sorting email, but I'm afraid to let it loose on my chaotic Inbox, I have a system. I use Gemini mostly for memes and charts for class Midjourney for slide images. Claude for admin and to setup quizzes and class activities ChatGPT mostly for research and for copy editing

I wanted a full model collaboration, so the lyrics are by ChatGPT 6.1 Sol, the music by Suno v6, and the video was made by Claude writing code that drew every frame from scratch, then synced it to the Suno track. Suno track: suno.com/song/cae4306...

Before the 5.5 video look goes out of style like Ghiblification, I thought it would be fun to generate a music video on copyright originality in the UK for my upcoming class. I'm delighted with the result, filled with fun copyright Easter eggs.

Our large-scale study of memorization of books in open-weight LLMs (e.g., Llama, Qwen) will appear at the 2026 Conference on Language Modeling as an oral. We made a website for exploring our results on 200 books and 14 models: books-memorization.github.io

How much do open-weight LLMs memorize specific books?
Open-weight LLMs memorize books far more than previously believed. Memorization varies by model family, model size, and book. In extreme cases, entire books are memorized, and we can generate them eff...

There's a crowded-yet-limited anti-AI market. The book story was their only real breakthrough in recent times, it must feel like they have to double down at this point.
