It's probably less to do with age or gas cousin, than it is with the fact that the first movie was just so damn good. :-) I personally am in my 60s & think both stand well on their own, but I get the preference for the original film. Also the original novel by our cousin Jack Finney shares credit.

The original was & is a true classic of sci-fi films, & this version added a lot of ideas & detail without harming any of the original stories ideas. The star of the original, Kevin McCarthy, was offered, accepted & performs a great cameo early in the film. It is one of the best remakes ever made.

It would be cool for someone to make a system that used solar power generated electricity to separate out a lot of the oxygen & hydrogen from "worthless" seawater using electrolysis, burned the he/ox, capturing pure water, & use the heat to boil remaining seawater to distill it leaving dry minerals.
