The shop is open when I arrive. I carry the papers in and the shopkeeper hands me the scissors. I ask if she is getting earlier or I’m getting later; she says she is getting earlier. I’m reassured.

At the shop The Sunday Lad and I have a beautiful routine. I hold the box lid up, he gets the papers out. He carries them in. I close the box lid. He snips the bundles; I pick up a fallen invoice. We thank each other.

Early stroll. Maybe that streetlight wants to change places with that star. My shadow and me: nearly a song title. Hello, silent hill. The horse is not there: horse-lack. A cat leaps over a high wall, almost flying for a moment.

Cycled into Warrington. Cinema later but I found copies of Pea Green Boat and an extremely lovely Waterstones bod told me that somebody had been in the Wigan branch asking for a copy. Felt a bit of a fraud signing them given mine isn't the sellable sig. Still one of my better moments of the year.

Across the Flatlands originally published in 100subtexts 100subtextsmagazine.blogspot.com #poetry
Across the Flatlands

We hiked across the flatlands,
found work in a chicken barn,
and slept in a caravan.

Sparrows kept us awake,
chittering in the metal roof.
The pay was too low.

We moved west into mist,
to a room in the shadow
of an overgrown hedge.

Sparrows bickered up
and out as we crossed
the staff car park.

They flicked their wings
in puddles. We picked up
our uniforms from a grey cabin

beside the warehouse,
where we earned just enough
to keep us poor.
