It depends on species, age, and also life stage! Ancient trees are those that have reached the ancient life stage &/or chronological age is 'old' (for its sp.), veteran trees are mature & have significant decay (a feature they share with ancient trees) but are not ancient by chron. age/development.

Some of the NEYEDC team had a fantastic day out recently at Brayton Barff wood, a Local Wildlife Site, where our surveyor Claire showed us the ropes in identifying and measuring ancient and veteran trees for addition to the Ancient Tree Inventory. They found some fantastic specimens (and fungi)! 🌳

We attended this year's Leeds University MSc field skills day last week, delivering a talk on making and sharing records alongside taxon experts from @ynuorg.bsky.social sharing their expertise in ID and specimen collection. It was great to chat to the new students and see their enthusiasm!

We visited some fantastic sites as part of the rolling survey programme of Local Wildlife Sites this year. From navigating wet woodlands and military training sites to grasslands and windswept verges, our surveyors have worked tirelessly to represent each site fairly despite this year's drought!

Another recent event of a busy summer! Some of our staff attended @rspb.bsky.social's Bempton Goes Wild 2026, acting as data hub for the event. There were a range of fantastic species seen and recorded - from this tiny new for 5k square Acorn Weevil to a mighty Minke Whale seen from the headlands 🌊

We attended Hassacarr Nature Reserve's activity day last week, just a stone's throw from our office in Dunnington. We set up some of NEYEDC's audio recording equipment, a camera trap, and moth traps to help survey the site. We had some very inquisitive visitors!

Our EIO Lucy has been hard at work analysing data for one of our local recorders, using records of farmland birds & crop type data to determine if species show crop preferences. With the warmer weather starting up again, it's been a great opportunity for some local moth trapping. Our EDO Hannah has been trapping at Hassacarr Pond Nature Reserve, just by our offices in Dunnington, and caught these beauties this morning - Beautiful Hook-tip, Silver Y, and Smoky Wainscot 💡

It may not be good for barbeques and beach trips, but grasslands and wetlands are flourishing at the moment in the wet weather. Last week our surveyor was lucky to visit two damp pasture sites near the Lancashire border which were awash with wildflowers and an impressive range of sedges! 💧

Our resident chick is growing! In just a week, our office's young Oystercatcher is looking noticeably bigger and more like its parents, including in its distinctive beak. Hopefully it'll soon grow into its feet! The family are now venturing further around the office estate 🐥

Our local Oystercatcher pair chose an interesting place to nest this year...on a tiny patch of gravel right outside of our offices! Watching mum, dad, and their growing chick over the last few weeks has brought us a lot of joy - enjoy some pictures of the happy family! 🪶🐥

We're helping a local recorder complete a lovely piece of work at the moment, digitising & analysing records of birds and the crops they associated with on the Wolds, collected over 14yrs 🌽 Analysis will attempt to determine if species have a crop preference & which variables might influence this.

After spending time over the last few years supporting new moth recorders in the region, beginning with the DECIDE project in 2022, it's fantastic to see so many still trapping and recording! Here's a selection of the wide range of beautiful species shared by our recorders over the last few weeks 📸
