I agree. My Y5s did (mostly) enjoy their recent football unit but it wasn’t a good vehicle for teaching it. They now want every other ball-based game to be football instead…

I agree with this.

Yeah i don’t disagree. It’s not entirely working right now. But my class see their once or twice a half term independent write as enjoyable (enough), writing about what they know, having built up to it over weeks. Not sure an exam would help instead. But no idea what other solution would be.

A view that ‘to do well in the test, you must just endlessly practice the test’, I think. So I’d just be very scared of the same happening for writing.

Alex @teachingwrens.bsky.social · 03/02/2026
*ideally* authentic then. My school has moved away from success criteria & worrying about whether every piece has every grammar point. But KS2 Reading SATs has led to *endless* ‘vipers’ test practice rather than wide reading & I’d worry the same would happen for a writing SAT.

Alex @teachingwrens.bsky.social · 03/02/2026
It’s certainly imperfect but I’d hate an exam more. At least current pieces can be ‘authentic’ and grammar can be used across the year. I fear a writing exam would lead to schls cramming in writing exam prep/mocks all year with all grammar shoved in at once in every piece.

This has been my worry all along with the breakfast club nonsense. You can talk about funding all you like, the long and the short of it is that school leaders end up with another job on the list, another extension to their working day, and the job becomes ever harder... And this is from DfE advice!
Extract from DfE guidance:
How they staff the breakfast club
A ‘whole school approach’, with senior staff, reception, kitchen staff and senior business manager support, alongside Farlington Wrap Around Service, has enabled the club to run smoothly. It includes:

*Farlington Wrap Around Service operating the free breakfast club using their own staff
*school kitchen staff and care takers taking on additional responsibilities to oversee all the cleaning up of free breakfast club bowls, plates and cutlery
*senior leaders at the school stepping in to support when take up of the free breakfast club increases

Getting worse at teaching
We talk a lot about how teachers get better at teaching, but don’t think enough about how teachers can get worse at teaching.

Great idea! I’m keeping much of my current class going up to Y5 & likely to have some spare time so will try this I think.

Great! Looks like such a smooth system with real impact. I’m trying to juggle something similar at primary: if those who need Phonics interventions miss out on whole-class reading lessons with age-related texts due to timetabling, they’re missing out on a lot.

Alex @teachingwrens.bsky.social · 22/06/2025
Amazing stuff. Did the children who needed intensive Phonics interventions also read the novels (/have the novels read to them)?

I *really* struggle to understand any school that doesn’t aim to complete with the top/prioritise attainment. Isn’t that what we’re all here for? Isn’t the most progressive thing you can do be to raise outcomes & life chances…?

I first watched it when I was in year 3 but year 2 would be fine I think. I'd start with 'Rose' or 'The Eleventh Hour'.

Alex @teachingwrens.bsky.social · 01/06/2025
parents haven't expressed confusion though, I imagine because it ties directly to the teacher.

Alex @teachingwrens.bsky.social · 01/06/2025
I think you'd dislike my school then! Teachers have a bird name that sticks with them. I was 'Wren class' when I taught Year 2, I'm now 'Wren class' as I teach Year 4, and will still be 'Wren class' next year! (At least it means I can keep my wren merch I suppose)

Yeah, I agree. Same problem could be applied to the curriculum I think. As (primary) English lead, it’s awfully tempting to write a bunch of fancy documents to create an English utopia, but I know they’d gather dust without proper action.
010
Alex @teachingwrens.bsky.social · 29/05/2025
Easy to end up stuck. No, or poor, codified policy? People do whatever and hard to give ‘reasonable’ feedback. Detailed policy? Potentially just gathering dust with no impact. I think you need solid policy with *a lot* of (well-delivered) CPD in-person.

I think @jonhutchinson.bsky.social has mentioned before that he had an interview lesson, a coaching conversation, then did the lesson again with the parallel class. I think that's a fantastic idea along with the ones you've mentioned.

I *think* last time you tweeted along the lines of: amazing NYC teaching approaches, but curriculum is behind (e.g. focused on transferable skills or finding 'main idea') - if so, do you still see that?

Yes - it's not uncommon overall to find out suddenly there's a visitor or a craft or 'national X day', so everything else has to go away (yet all curriculum still needs to be covered!)... with very very minimal notice.

I’d scrap the staff meeting model and start again if I could. We can’t keep bouncing from topic to topic, week to week, expecting teachers to take everything on board. “If everything is a priority, then nothing is a priority.” Work smarter and be better.

I remember when @mralmonded.bsky.social was reading the research on grips and grasps and this made for a very interesting conversation at home! We’re always banging on about that tripod grip, but the research says if it’s a mature grip then it’s fine #rED24

That is honestly the dream INSET day. I've thought for a long time that September - everyone coming back with lots to do and lots on their minds - is not the time to go 'hey everyone here's something brand new to think about and implement it tomorrow!'.

Do you happen to know if there's research on the benefit (or not) of doing lead-ins at the start of words? I can understand it for the consistency (always start the letters on the line), but as an adult, it's the first thing I drop if I'm writing at speed.
