Institutions aren't moral or immoral. They're amoral. They respond to constraints, not to morality.

One thing I wish more people understood is that attention does not automatically lead to leverage.

Happy Fourth of July, everyone. May we advance the causes of justice, freedom, and human rights over the next 250 years even further than we did during the first 250.

I agree with @joshtpm.bsky.social. The Supreme Court has become anti-Constitutional and must be reformed.

Not to knock anyone who likes them, but as a sociologist, it's hard not to see superhero movies as wish fulfillment for the effective social movements we currently lack.

If you're having trouble getting started in activism, just rip off the band aid and reach out to an organization. Remember, it's not marriage. You can step away if you choose.

I hope one day the current era will be regarded as a dark age for activism — because that will mean people have become much smarter and more intentional about how to influence unjust institutions.

Raising awareness doesn't automatically lead to change. Institutions can survive "awareness" for decades.

With all the billions of dollars and terabytes of data pumped into politics, both major parties have gotten too good at seducing their half of the electorate. This is a structural problem we're going to have to address someday.

I Will Teach You to Change the World @teachchange.bsky.social · 25/05/2026
You don't have to convince people how right you are. Most of them know already. Convince them you have a *strategy* that will work, in which they can play a part.

Caring is an input to social movements, not an output. A lot of people caring about a cause doesn't inherently give you any power, leverage, or positive results.

One of the biggest myths in activism is: “If enough people care, change will happen.” But institutions absorb public anger all the time. Without leverage, elites can often just wait movements out.

Current events reminder: The people in power are counting on the public having a shorter attention span than the crisis itself. A huge part of movement strategy is simply staying organized long enough to outlast the news cycle.

A lot of people right now are not apathetic. They’re overwhelmed. Disorganized. Burned out. Afraid. Isolated. Unsure what would actually help. Those are strategic problems, not moral failures.

One of the biggest myths in activism is that awareness alone creates change. It doesn’t. People can know about injustice and still feel powerless, isolated, exhausted, afraid, or disorganized. Change requires pressure, coordination, leverage, and strategy.

One of the biggest mistakes in activism is confusing activity with strategy. Posting isn’t strategy. Protesting isn’t strategy. Caring isn’t strategy. Those things can support a strategy. But on their own, they don’t necessarily create pressure, leverage, or change.
