Lakeland had a kid named Joe Tuzze when I was in HS (he went on to play at Akron). He was 5-11, 230lbs FB/LB, but also threw shot put and somehow ran anchor on the 4x100 team. We had a “scavenger hunt” at the first big track meet, with the top score going to whoever stole his golden shot put ball.

My solution to every struggling coach/team is to watch Shoresy, so maybe there’s a reason I’m not asked my opinion.

The song is a powerhouse, and I see now, better than I used to, why it’s a standout for a lot of people on that album and who grew up in that era of music, like I did. I’m also prepared to say that Meteora is their best album, far and away, and it’s one of the best albums out in 2003.

And, while there are a few songs or sounds that haven’t stood the test of time, a song like “Numb” really stands out. Piano through the verse and on the periphery in the chorus. Chester singing his goddamn ass off. A killer riff, and great backing vocals from Mike Shinoda.

But it resonated with me in a way it hasn’t in a long time. Also, beyond the subject matter, the instrumentation is so good. I think, because they came from that “nu-metal” era of music, LP gets lumped in with a lot of loud, incoherent bands with music that aged poorly.

And I guess I never really listened to it the right way, because that was the first time I heard it as a kid/teenager singing about their relationship to a parent. And that hit me like a brick. I don’t know if it’s because I’m a dad now, and I wasn’t when that song came out, or what.

That being said, I liked “Numb” and found it catchy, but also maybe didn’t fully connect with it. But watching that reaction the other day made me think of it differently. The YouTuber mentioned how she found the song so sad and heavy, and mentioned the familial relationship described.

Like, through my LP obsession growing up and then through working in alternative rock radio, I’ve heard that song hundreds of times. And I’ve always liked it, but it was never my favorite, especially on the album, Meteora. I always gravitated towards “Somewhere I Belong,” or “Lying From You.”

I watched one of those reaction videos on YouTube to a vocal coach (actually more of an opera singer turned YouTube reactor) listening and reacting to Linkin Park’s “Numb,” and I actually came away with a new appreciation for a song I already liked quite a bit.

I was programming ESPN radio in NEPA when this happened. I remember driving the FUZZ 92.1 van back from an event and listening to Will and Kate Fagan completely bomb out with this segment. It was so bad that Bomani had to phone in while he was on vacation. Incredible radio.
