It is extremely standard to assume that the brain activity encodes imagery and all other sensory modalities, the contrary position would be fringe

That is a good paper for showing what is possible, not as much how it works. Nonetheless this kind of work is standard; what's different about this paper is that their source measurements are MEG rather than neural multiunit activity. See e.g. for more open detail: neurips.cc/virtual/2024...

We can! In the linked study, it was done in realtime with human subjects!

Not a joke. Are you just trying to be dismissive without having any substantive reply?

tbabb @tbabb.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
unfortunately the heuristic of personally disliking meta doesn't tell you much about whether the research is legitimate. This is all very standard in the field Here is a result from a completely different lab: neurips.cc/virtual/2024...

There is remarkable correspondence between the receptive fields in the visual cortex and the receptive fields of a modern multi-layer convolutional artificial neural network

Hi, I work at a BCI company, and this take is completely wrong. We can read complete imagery straight out of brains. Here is a recent example: ai.meta.com/blog/brain-a...

Towards a Real-Time Decoding of Images from Brain Activity
Using magnetoencephalography (MEG), Meta showcases an AI system capable of decoding the unfolding of visual representations in the brain with an unprecedented temporal resolution.

if this comic is true (and I believe it is), then AI does not threaten it. the presence of AI in the world cannot stop people from wanting to do these things on their own terms

I think people want to fit in, and will largely conform to the beliefs they think they're surrounded by which I think this means it comes down to whether social media continues to exist in its current form, which incentivizes attention-grabbing and id-validating

there is no resolution to that constraint. either you think everything will be business as usual, which is an insane thing to think given how the tech is progressing, or you think that nothing will be the same ever again, which (even if true) means you have insane millenarian beliefs

the UI should control the harnesses through an API; agents do not need the UI. but bytes are not a particularly human friendly way to visualize and control state
120
tbabb @tbabb.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
I think we should be distinguishing the harness (headless thing that exposes the agent to the host machine) and the UI (how users control harnesses). you should be about to put a harness anywhere and control it from anywhere
