The last season of the Wire was so goofy that it made me retroactively unsuspend my disbelief about some of the more fantastical parts of the earlier seasons.

I went to Mexico ~25 years ago as a kid and had people asking to touch my blonde hair in the street. It's amazing how fast the world has globalized, even recently

I feel pretty comfortable dismissing any movie where they gussie up Tom Cruise or whoever like this. It just goes into the prosthetic face movie waste bin in my mind, not gonna watch it.

Ha, I was thinking something similar after reading all of the hysterical responses to that joke. It's enough to make you want to go back to talking about flying spaghetti monsters

The YIMBY movement is really impressive for how thoroughly left leaning people now embrace standard economic thinking about housing when they reject it everywhere else. NIMBYs get dogpiled on a site as lefty as Bluesky but the concept of supply in any other context is written off as Reaganomics.

It wasn't my favorite either, but after reading I discovered I read a translation that most people didn't love. A lot of the humor didn't come through

It's weird for them to disqualify the Sopranos but Simpsons is truly a product of the 1990s, not 21st century

Apropos of maybe something I found a staircase in Barcelona that even the Spaniards think is unsafe (it's roped off)

What do you make of the plumber's claim that cast iron is less cheap to repair?

I agree, it's difficult to get oriented for someone like me who doesn't live there. Growing up in Charlotte I didn't realize how rare it is for a city to have no water in or around it, it definitely makes it harder to recognize from a map. Great article!

Yeah they will need solar panels on the top for full effectiveness

My sister in Charlotte with above ground lines lost power 5 times this summer. It was one of the first things she mentioned to me when she visited since it was so disruptive.

Yeah that's true. I feel like NYC had some circa 2005 new buildings that look like five over ones (albeit on much narrower lots) but somehow that's been solved. Looks like mostly brick or glass on the outside now, not petroleum products.

Chicago is the glaring exception to that NYT article from a couple years ago about how new build apartments look the same everywhere in the country. Every new mid rise building in Chicago could only be from Chicago

Couldn't they easily turn around and say that's because the second staircases prevent deaths outside the unit with the fire?

It's funny that even when you go through the dirt poor parts of the country with people living in the shittiest little house you've ever seen, indoor couches on the porch, trash fire burning, all that, they invariably still have a shiny new pickup truck parked outside

@stephenjacobsmith.com did you read this one? The startup in the article claims to have a heat pump that doesn't use refrigerant airform.space

Airform One

Interesting, I feel like I can feel the slope under my feet even for the fairly flat corners so I'd expect that a blind person could too. Definitely some tension there. I feel like the blind are far outnumbered by the mobility impaired but I know that can't really be a consideration with our laws.

There you go again mixing up your ADA permitted sidewalk slope graphics. Why do they require the raised bumps like that? For a wheelchair user it seems like that stuff is less grippy than concrete.

The per prisoner numbers are pretty funny too. 655 square feet per person has to be more space than the average New Yorker lives in right? $2.8M in cost per prisoner as well.

11 years is actually a very long hold for a private equity-backed business, long enough to make you wonder if something went wrong. Coming up with the correct gay culture analogy for that is above my pay grade so I won't attempt it.

It's funny that LA has that lot coverage but still feels so spread out and unwalkable. Wide roads and deep buildings is the worst of both worlds
