We run a DNA-barcoding service for amateur biologists. We recently helped with genetic data for a mystery snail. It confirmed ID and revealed that the full mitochondrial genome of Helicella itala, that has been sitting in Genbank and other data bases for 10 years, actually belongs to another species

Last month, we hosted Yeliz Ergöl on an Erasmus+ scholarship. She devoted herself to creating a collection of mollusc specimens from our project in the Komarnica Canyon in Montenegro, to be deposited in the Natural History Museum of Montenegro (Prirodnjački Muzej Crne Gore).

In my new book, The Urban Naturalist, I talk about inspiring community scientists like Graham Moates, who used his plastic cleanups to discover that, in the UK, 3 million mammals every year die inside discarded bottles and cans. His paper: lnkd.in/er8u49s8
a composite image of a vole, a discarded plastic bottle, Mr. Moates during a plastic cleanup, and a graph from the paper that he wrote about his research. The graphs shows the relationship between the neck width of the bottle and the species of mammal that died inside.

No matter how the usage of "common" names is growing, old-fashioned "Latin" names are still the only official naming of species, so we cannot do without. But they are hard to remember and pronounce. My friend, Belgian insect advocate Bart Van Camp, makes these lovely mnemonics to help us out.
