2021 kal'tsit #arknights
art of kal'tsit cloaked in shadow, her eyes narrowed and glaring at the viewer. the text reads: "forgiveness a a form of kindness, of waiving your right to anger, will only make us weak beyond measure. I will not waive that right"art of kal'tsit, staring intently forward as a giant black dragon-like monster bursts from her back, its head thrown back in a roar

i have to constantly reckon with the fact that i'm too cowardly to sabotage fossil fuel infrastructure, you know? or, like, key SUVs. oooor even go to the relatively safe protests. so i've just got to come to terms with the fact i cannot live a perfect morality regardless. and do what i can.

i don't think i would be any different from you in that situation. we just... do what we can. help people pick up the pieces. you know? something i reckon with a lot is even outside of the context of active state violence, the THREAT of state violence stops me from doing things i view as heroic.

it's not really possible to make a blanket statement that applies to all of humanity, but... "nine times out of ten, SOMEONE will try to help" is something i find very hopeful. not in a belief that the future WILL be better, but that i will have people by my side when we try to make it better.

The ‘Bystander Effect’ Is Real; But Research Shows That When More People Witness Violence, It’s More Likely Someone Will Step up and Intervene - Neuroscience News
While many people freeze while witnessing a violent event, researchers say nine times out of ten, at least one person will intervene to help the victim.

i honestly don't think i agree; i think it's more likely that the just world fallacy is a useful propagandistic message that allows people in power to hold onto it and has thus pervaded our society basically from the time "justice" was invented as a concept!

like on the one hand i get what you mean in the sense that they don't feel useful because the violence doesn't respond, but i think i also kinda disagree in that just because they don't apply in the moment doesn't mean they're entirely helpless - human rights and dignity help us heal afterwards

police violence feels overwhelming at times but empires always fall because they lose their monopoly on violence one way or another ig.

oh no yeah i was just using allegory(?) there because it's 2 AM and i make questionable decisions in communication at the best of times. like broadly speaking my point was mostly that the definition of violence is fuzzy no matter how much you try to specify

sure, there's nuance to it, but to some degree that's why we push back against the nirvana fallacy, right? every little bit of friction we remove makes it easier to help each other.

what makes a wolf eating sheep violence but a lamb eating grass not? is it violence for the plant to grow thorns? idk this is all conceptual bullshit that i have to rely on since i'm so far from the frontlines.
110
Taveena @taveena.bsky.social · 16h
violence is such a complex topic i don't even know how to start talking about it. it is both completely natural as a way by which organisms engage with each other and completely unnatural as something that only exists because humanity chose to define it.

a thorny part of this discussion is that "doing it for yourself" is a concept that's hard to even discuss; i guess i don't really think that any action is purely selfless or selfish. in the end i'm helping people because... that's what my monkey brain wants from me, heh.
110
Taveena @taveena.bsky.social · 16h
idk. sure, my actions are limited on a global scale, but... i FEEL like i made a big difference. when i see my loved ones smiling i CAN point at that and go "I Did This". everything i do to make the world better feels worthwhile because it happened, not because of what the historians will write.

it is an expression of power both when the empire crushes the indigenous people and when the indigenous people reclaim their lands. it is also power when *nothing changes*, when things are held in stasis. power is everything and thus it feels beyond me to engage with most of the time.

an immense and terrifying force, but neither good nor evil in itself, not a rule of the world but rather a description of how we process and engage with the world? ... i don't know.
110
Taveena @taveena.bsky.social · 16h
i've always had a strange relationship with the idea of "power", honestly. it's an undeniable factor (or rather, it IS the label we use to describe factors), but there's this... gravity to it that i don't quite understand. human power never felt any different to me than, idk, geothermal power.

yeah fundamentally i agree in reality but those moments of improvement are worth fighting for. i keep bringing up the Makhnovshchina because it's easy for me to google "ukrainian anarchist commune" but there are so many instances of people building a better world for a while.

oh, the idea that because perfection is impossible the cause itself isn't worth pursuing. like, a common example in american politics is gun control - "we should regulate guns" "you can't stop all shootings" (implied 'therefore your suggestion is a bad one')

in the end i have a very optimistic perspective on human nature, though; i'm very aware of our capacity for harm but i... in the end i feel like most people DO want to help. just, y'know, altruists tend to be less likely to hoard power that they can then use to hurt people.

tbh the nirvana fallacy is something i really wrestle with a lot internally so it might just be me projecting on that front.
100
Taveena @taveena.bsky.social · 17h
mind, i also don't really get the concept of a "reptile brain". humans are animals. it is our monkey brain that conceptualized both genocide and world peace. i don't really think there IS a fundamental distinction between us and other animals, only familiarity and ego.

are there going to be diminishing returns as we push towards the theoretical limit of utopia? maybe. maybe not. that doesn't matter for now, because it is the progress we make along the way that matters.
200
Taveena @taveena.bsky.social · 17h
it doesn't need to be possible to be worth trying to move towards. that kind of perfectionism only stops things from getting better - even if it can't be achieved in actuality, the difference between a world that is 50% ideal and 51% ideal matters! we keep fighting and seeing how we can improve.

which fits in REALLY well with avitus's introductory monologue - he believes it is NATURAL and INEVITABLE for civilizations to attempt to consume and destroy each other, something which discomforts irene (with her very *catholic* perspective on imperialism)

it was somewhere in path of life i believe, but as shown in the alternate timelines where the aegir chose symbiosis, conflict wasn't inevitable. it's also pretty explicit in under tides and stultifera with FTT and Endspeaker. survival need not come at the expense of others. martus disagrees.

Taveena @taveena.bsky.social · 18h
to some degree, but fundamentally the seaborn aren't even in CONFLICT with aegir *until the church of the deep gets involved*; it was only when Martus, an aegirian, mobilized the seaborn against aegir that they even began to interact!

i am really curious to find out where they're going to take ulpianus's patriotism; it's definitely an aspect of his character that's ripe for exploration given how much it clashes with the other hunters.

honestly it makes sense because religion, faith, and culture aren't really distinct concepts in the way that modern christianity has kinda tried to conceptualize it as and frankly their focus on muddying the issue to maintain power is part of the mess and i've forgotten all the details already,
000
Taveena @taveena.bsky.social · 19h
i think coming to terms with that incompleteness is a part of the human experience. (religion's also incredibly abstract to me, fwiw. i spend a LOT of time asking my friends and partners to explain parts of laterano and iberia to me when they come up.)

we wouldn't have anything to talk about, would we? this conversation, sharing our differing perspectives, this is an act of human connection. this is why i love analysis.
110
Taveena @taveena.bsky.social · 20h
you have your own methods for engaging with a work and every act of thought about it is analysis, regardless of what you perceive as the "correct form". i really appreciate it despite - or rather BECAUSE - of the differences in how we think about it. if we all analyzed things the same way...
110
Taveena @taveena.bsky.social · 20h
that's a really hard question to answer, but i also think... to some extent you don't NEED to. you have your own experience that is in ITSELF valuable. i've learned a lot over this conversation, but i also know there will be plenty of things i don't understand no matter how hard i try.
