The quote echoes in Kaveh’s mind, the same way it has many times now since the day Kaveh first read it written the notes Alhaitham made about Sachin. It’d taken a while for him to decipher their meaning, and even after that it’d still felt out of reach, an immovable impossibility against the life he’d chosen to live. Ideals and dreams have and always been the backbone of artistry, and to not lean on those felt like a complete antithesis to what he strives for.

But now, as he stands at the top of King Deshret’s Mausoleum and knowing immeasurable disaster might come to them tomorrow despite all of their efforts, he thinks he might finally start to understand what those words truly mean. Especially in the face of Alhaitham’s steady, unwavering belief.

(or, what happens after their conversation at the top of the Mausoleum the night before everything changes. Spoilers for Patch 6.6/Luna 7.)

“No.”

That is the answer which Alhaitham, star alumnus of Haravatat, former Acting Grand Sage and current Scribe had given right after hearing a long spirited proposal regarding the upcoming Sabzeruz Festival, which had ended with the suggestion of him taking up the role of the Knight of Flowers.

The proposer—that is, the head of the organizing committee for the festival, whose name Alhaitham did not bother to commit to memory—flounders, clearly having not expected to be rejected so quickly or thoroughly (why they expected anything otherwise, Alhaitham supposes he will never know). Regardless, it doesn’t seem to stop them from pressing onward. “But—but it hasn’t even been a minute! Or half of one! Ten seconds, even!”

Alhaitham bites down on the urge to sigh. Did he already not make himself clear enough with his direct and succinct answer earlier? “I don’t need it. The answer is still no.”

For some reason, his response seems to perplex the other further. “But—but why not?” they ask, frowning. “Everyone on the committee voted that you should be. Even all of the Sages agree. Not to mention the fact that you were the Grand Sage whom the Lesser Lord personally selected!”

Ah. So they’re using <i>that</i> reasoning again, are they? Alhaitham doesn’t bother to hold back the snort that desires to come out, letting it escape with relish. “<i>Former</i> Acting Grand Sage,” he corrects them, crossing his arms over his chest, “And I was only in that post for three months.” A pause comes after that, as Alhaitham first assumes himself to be done only to decide a second after that he has something else to add on. “Surely that’s something which has not escaped your purview, considering how you spent the last ten minutes of your proposal attempting to butter me up for your ridiculous request.”

(It’s my chance, Haitham, Kaveh had babbled to him excitedly as Alhaitham helped to snap on his hair clips. The biggest and brightest names all together, and they asked for me! Isn’t that amazing?

Alhaitham only hums in response as he gets the last of the hair clips in place. Perhaps they just want something different to distract them, he’d said after a pause, fingers moving to tidy up the loose strands of Kaveh’s hair. The public has been clamoring for something new to get their attention since Farrah Yon-Dale decided to up and vanish after the ban that the Administration imposed on her.

Kaveh huffed then, and from the mirror of their shared dresser Alhaitham can see the way he’d puffed his cheeks, evidently affonted by his words. Just let me take the compliment for once, will you? I doubt you want me to turn up to the party sulking.

Alhaitham hums again but elects to say nothing else, as nothing that he wants to say will adhere to Kaveh’s request. Though linguistics is one of his two Selections, navigating through a conversation with Kaveh never fails to challenge his abilities to find the right words—rather than it being a nuisance, however, it has become an exercise that he finds a fair amount of enjoyment in.

Still, Alhaitham understands that this isn’t the best time to let himself indulge, so he lets himself do so in other ways—namely, by shifting one of his hands down so that he can grasp Kaveh’s chin, tilting it up as he bends down and brushes their lips together, nipping ever so gently at one corner before pulling back.

Kaveh’s next breath comes out breathy and shuddering. Oaf, Alhaitham hears him mutter, the warmth in his voice turning the intended insult into a familiar endearment. Don’t think this means that I’ll let you off.

I’m counting on that, Senior, he returns with a murmur of his own, and kisses him one more time, just because he can.)

“Kaveh,” he begins yet again, but unlike before he doesn’t stop there and continues on, and when he says his next words Kaveh finds himself wishing that Tighnari hadn’t. “It’s today.”

Today. A normal word that should otherwise mean nothing much at all, under any other circumstances, yet now Kaveh can’t help but think that at this very moment it sounds like the most dreadful thing he’s ever known. Today. Not tomorrow, not next week, not any other length of time. Today.

The pressure behind his eyes springs up once more, a feeling that has long become familiar to him now since that day. That horrible, horrible day. That day which he does not want to think about, let alone acknowledge, yet it is the only thing that has remained in his mind since then, and knowing that it is today only makes it worse.

There’s a shuffling sound from behind him this time, followed by another quiet sigh. “...I’ll give you a bit more time,” Tighnari says to him after a moment. “But we have to leave by the hour if we want to reach the cemetery in time for the funeral.”

Today.

That single word echoes in his mind as Kaveh lets out a shuddering breath and squeezes his already closed eyes with unspoken desperation, but that does nothing except to worsen the pressure at the back of his skull.

Today. A terrible word for many reasons, but the biggest of them is this: it is the fact that Tighnari did not need to come in here and remind him in the first place, for Kaveh could never forget this, no matter how much a part of him wants to. He can’t forget, just like how he can’t stop himself from counting the number of days that have passed since that awful morning.

Today marks day number seven. Seven days since Alhaitham’s body had been discovered at a back alley among the winding streets of Port Ormos. Seven days since he’d last been back at Alhaitham’s house. Seven days since the Akademiya had launched an investigation into the sudden, unexplained murder of its Scribe.

Seven days since Kaveh’s…

And so with that in mind Sunday puts on the same, charming smile that he’s worn countless times throughout his whole life, since his days at the orphanage with his sister. The very same smile that helped to get them into the care of a well to-do family, and the very same one he has since learned to mimic after the day where their once perfect life had fallen apart.

“I’ll defer to your wisdom, then,” he says as pleasantly as he can, dropping the topic smoothly and letting the rest of the day pass by without any other incident or mention of the man in question.

But on the very next day, right in the middle of lunch, Sunday purposefully walks across the staff canteen with his home-made bento in hand, making his way over to the table at the corner that seems to only ever seat one despite the table itself being no smaller than any of the others in this place.

“Hello there,” he starts, flashing his usual smile once the aforementioned lone occupant at the table actually looks up to meet his gaze. “You’re Dr. Maruki, correct? I’m Sunday, an intern. May I join you for lunch?”
