@zackpolanski.bsky.social Not just Vogue! Glamour too!
While Starmer's Labour has shifted to the right, the membership of the Green Party under Zack Polanski grows. Much like Mamdani, Polanski campaigns on an explicitly socialist agenda that is down-to-earth and compelling, unlike the cyborg-like communications of the Labour party.
Polanski pushes a wealth tax, affordable housing and free childcare - striking similar to Mumdani.
It's hard to find hope at a time when environmental protections are being destroyed, a war has decimated Gaza, and the far right is never too far away. Mamdani may be the new mayor of New York, but Trump is still the president of the United States and has threatened to withhold federal funding to the city. But what Mamdani's victory shows us is that the elite don't always win, and the politics of pessimism is failing - at least on the streets of New York. That, for a short while, should allow a brief moment of hope.

If (when) the news cycle becomes too much, please remember to take time out to focus on other things 🙏. This is one of the best pieces of advice I ever came across: #politics #activism #music
A friend once shared what she called the parable of the choir: a choir can sing a beautiful note impossibly long because singers can individually drop out to breathe as necessary and the note goes on. Social justice activism should be like that she said. That stuck with me.

We are wasting computation and environmental resources down this path. Legislate against wasteful uses of significant computation.

"I saw an article about a guy who used an LLM to apply to hundreds of jobs while he slept and woke up to offers for like 50 interviews.

So firms are using LLMs to automate parts of the job search process and skip straight to the parts that can’t be done by machines.

And workers are using LLMs to automate the same parts of the job search process and skip straight to the parts that can’t be done by machines.

So there are just all these LLMs talking to each other, at immense cost and effort, in order to get us right to…the same point we were at before LLMs.

When Joseph Tainter talked about societies collapsing when the marginal return on additional investments in complexity turns negative, this is what he meant. So much labor, so much money, so much energy and environmental destruction, all to…get us right back to where we started."

Fun fact, Bluesky (the platform, not the organisation) cannot be bought. It’s inviolably decentralised. bsky.social/about/faq
