I often talk about "decoupling survival from employment." It’s the most important economic shift of our lifetime. If we don’t do this through universal basic income and healthcare, the rise of AI won’t lead to a "golden age of abundance"—it will lead to a crisis of survival for the working class.

Besides being costly, means-testing creates potentially lethal false negative errors and non-takeup issues that universality eliminates in favor of non-lethal false positive errors that can be addressed via the tax system Universal basic income and healthcare and progressive taxes are the way to go
Infographic titled “Means-Test Screening Outcomes” showing a 2×2 grid plus a third “Doesn’t apply (barriers/stigma)” column. Columns: “Screen says: Eligible (approve benefits)” and “Screen says: Ineligible (deny benefits),” with an added “Doesn’t apply.” Rows: “Eligible/in need” and “Ineligible/not in need.” Cells: (1) True Positive (green): in need, approved—help delivered. (2) False Negative (red): in need, denied—exclusion error; harm; can be fatal. (3) Non-takeup (purple): eligible but doesn’t apply—disabled, paperwork, stigma—unmet need. (4) False Positive (yellow): not in need, approved—inclusion error—waste/leakage. (5) True Negative (light blue): not in need, denied—correct exclusion. (6) No Claim (gray): not in need, doesn’t apply—no cost. Footer text: Universality eliminates false negatives and non-takeup; means tests can cost more to administer than the help delivered; false positives can be corrected through the tax system.

After a few months of getting our flippers wet, we realized something: Gander is a bit of an odd duck in tech, especially in how it gets built and supported. Traditional venture capital funding doesn't fit a benefit company like ours. Likewise with a lot of government programs.
White graphic with the Gander logo and the word “Gratitude” at the top. Illustrated Canada geese fly in a circular, symmetrical formation at the centre. Below, text reads: “When people in Canada come together, remarkable things take shape. Thank you for shaping this with us.”

A few months ago, Gander advisor Blaine Cook from New_Public reached out to say he wanted to introduce me to Catherine Tait, who previously served as CEO of the CBC. We're really glad he did.
Portrait graphic featuring Catherine Tait, Strategic Advisor for Media Acquisition. She is shown in a circular headshot against a black background, with shoulder-length red hair and a calm expression. The design includes the word “Gratitude” at the top and illustrated flying geese along the bottom.

"One of the things people are commonly worried about with this kind of program is that when you give people cash they’re going to be less likely to go to work and be less productive members of society. And we didn’t actually find any evidence of that in our study." Enough testing. Just do it. #UBI

In this clip, I cover the recent Philly experiment that finally tested housing vouchers against cash in a randomized controlled trial. The monthly basic income was almost 4x as effective at reducing homelessness in 18 months, dropping it by 67% compared to 19%. 1 in 4 vouchers weren't even usable.

New longread essay from me in response to the slew of recent hot takes holding up a few guaranteed income pilot results as some kind of nail in the coffin of universal basic income and even cash transfers in general. This is a long one because I dive into the details and cover much more evidence.

This is HUGE basic income news if Thailand actually does implement a Negative Income Tax in 2027. They could be the first country with a NIT. I don't see any details yet in terms of amount and phaseout rate but if they set the threshold at 60k baht and set 50% rate, poverty could drop by up to 90%.

If you support unconditional basic income and want to help advocate for it, one action item you can do is to just check my timeline each day to look for posts that I've reposted. I make a point of regularly amplifying what I consider to be good UBI posts. It takes me hours. It can take you minutes.
