#ArtistFaveNonAlbumSingles 5 Shake The Disease | Depeche Mode | 1985 One of two new tracks on The Singles 81>85 compilation. Shake The Disease was a darker turn for Mode and helped usher in their Imperial Phase. It’s still in my Depeche Mode Top 5 songs of all time list. youtu.be/r3ld80_p8bc

That was great but they seem to stop at 1976 and then constantly release albums/material from 66-75! So frustrating. I know there probably isn’t much in the vaults from Low and “Heroes” but it would be nice if they were represented again somehow.

#ArtistFaveNonAlbumSingles 6 Thieves Like Us | New Order | 1984 After The Perfect Kiss this is my favourite New Order single. Released between PC&L and Low-Life, Thieves also contains my favourite NO b-side, that magnificent beast Lonesome Tonight. Total value for money. youtu.be/uv9cO4Uf40A

#TheCureFriday Fascination Street | 1989 My second dip into Disintegration and this time it’s the US only single Fascination Street. The UK and Europe got Lullaby as the lead single and although I preferred that at the time, Fascination Street is my preference now. youtu.be/7ZsQdLlvuk4

#ArtistFaveNonAlbumSingles 7 Tour De France | Kraftwerk | 1983 A Kraftwerk standalone single from 1983. They did eventually theme a whole album around it but the original single version is a beauty. Possibly the only single featuring heavy breathing that received radio play. youtu.be/rTe7U92ecX8

I think he mentioned it should have been called Standing On A Beach.

Didn’t know that but it would be nice to have a version readily available. Maybe on a 3CD singles set? Come on Universal…

#ArtistFaveNonAlbumSingles 8 Killing An Arab | The Cure | 1978 The Cure’s debut single wasn’t tied to a UK studio album. The b-side (10.15 Saturday Night) was and as far as I’m aware KAA has only been released on CD twice (both on 80s pressings) so a remaster would be nice.🤞 youtu.be/RFIwEQkH7sg

#ArtistFaveNonAlbumSingles 9 Ask | The Smiths | 1986 As a painfully shy 14 year old in 1986 this song spoke directly to me. I didn’t know a buck-tooth girl in Luxembourg but hearing those lyrics, it felt like someone understood. Johnny’s joyous guitars just topped it all off. youtu.be/zoo9Vu1a9bU

I could have done more too Graeme. I think more modern albums can shape you too, i was 32 when Antics came out. Not exactly modern I know but it certainly left an impression on me.

#ArtistFaveNonAlbumSingles 10 Destroy The Heart | The House Of Love | 1988 1988 was a great year for The House Of Love. Released in the same year as their stunning debut album, Destroy The Heart was the assured non-album single that topped John Peel’s Festive 50 in 1988. youtu.be/nS_atvx0GYE

#My9Albums Be rude not to join in. I would have included Trans-Europe Express but they didn’t offer the correct artwork so I couldn’t bring myself to include it. 🙄 Antics is a more than adequate substitute though. 💿

#ArtistFaveNonAlbumSingles 11 Alice | The Sisters Of Mercy | 1982 From one Goth classic to another and an early standalone single from The Sisters Of Mercy. Alice was their third single release and for me, still their finest 3m and 35s. youtu.be/-GwWra1sQgo

#ArtistFaveNonAlbumSingles 12 Bela Lugosi’s Dead | Bauhaus | 1979 For a song that’s 47 years old, Bela Lugosi’s Dead still sounds absolutely incredible. Did it invent Goth? Maybe, maybe not but as an example of the genre, you’d be hard pushed to find a better one. youtu.be/etBwW_8DRI8

#TheCureFriday Burn | 1994 Written for The Crow OST in 1994 but incredibly it wasn’t performed live until nearly 20 years later. Burn is now an essential part of a Cure live set. It’s also an essential part of my Cure top 5 songs list. youtu.be/mm-uozFJekA

#ArtistFaveNonAlbumSingles 14 Life In Tokyo | Japan | 1979 A gamechanger for Japan. Produced by Giorgio Moroder, Life In Tokyo was a massive leap in quality and change of direction for the band. Of course it wasn’t a hit (initially) but it should have been. youtu.be/O0x4XHdoQ9E

#ArtistFaveNonAlbumSingles 15 Experiment IV | Kate Bush | 1986 I’ve slightly tweaked my #StandaloneSingles list from earlier this year. First up is Experiment IV which just goes to prove that not all new songs tagged onto Best Of collections are filler. A great KB single. youtu.be/rpcUTWHlbvI

Two seminal albums both released on 12th September. Empires And Dance by #SimpleMinds (1980) and Spirit Of Eden by #TalkTalk (1988). Two of my favourite albums of all time, worlds apart in style and sound but in terms of quality and artistry, both albums overflow with creative freedom.
