This week’s #ShowMeYourKnits : What’s on your needles 🧶 I’m working on a Musselburgh hat while traveling. Still plugging away on the Menton 2 pullover for my son. At the swatching stage for my Roost pullover for myself for the Where We Knit KAL. #knitsky

I wanted to share about an interesting KAL I’m participating in. It’s being hosted on IG. It’s called the Where We Knit KAL. The idea is to knit something inspired by where you live 🧶 I’ve chosen the Roost Pullover by Amy Christoffers and Jamieson’s Spindrift yarn. Details in alt text. #knitsky
When I heard about the Where We Knit KAL (aka knit-a-long) I was intrigued. Most of the time when I hear about KALs, I am knee deep in an existing project or have too many projects already lined up. This time though, the theme of the KAL grabbed my attention and lined up perfectly with projects that I wanted to knit.
.
The theme of the KAL is to knit a project inspired by where you live. I think I live in a pretty inspiring place. Prince Edward Island is a place with big, beautiful skies, rich red soil, water views, capes, sandy beaches, winding river ways, and a rolling patchwork of farmland.
.
I have three projects that I feel would be great for this KAL. I shared them in my last post. The first is the Roost Pullover by Amy Christoffers @savoryknitting. I first came across this pattern in a beautifully written post by @thehealthyknitter. She’d knit three versions of this sweater in colour schemes based upon three trips she’d taken to Shetland. One really spoke to me. She called it her ‘water and weeds’ version. She was kind enough to share the specific Jamieson’s colours that she used. These colours felt very close to my inpiration photos. So I knit a swatch to see if I was close (had to replace one colour I didn’t have). The only thing I felt was really missing from my first swatch was a colour to represent the rich red soil of PEI. So I swapped out the brown and replaced it with a reddish brown.
.
And voila, I have a colour scheme inspired by where I live. It’s a PEI soil and shoreline inspired colour scheme.
.
First photo is my final swatch. Swipe to see individual yarn colours, an inspiration photo, and the swatch knit up in @thehealthyknitter’s ‘water and weeds’ colour scheme.

The KAL runs from 1 Nov - 31 Jan.For the Jamieson’s Spindrift lovers out there, my colour scheme is as follows:
MC: Stonewash
CC1: Dewdrop
CC2: Eucalyptus
CC3: Yellow Ochre
CC4: Paprika
CC5: SandA view of the West River, PEI. The first swatch that I knit. This is the @thehealthyknitter’s ‘water and weeds’ colour scheme (though I did have to substitute the colourway Sand for her Ivory since I couldn’t find Ivory anywhere).

This week’s #ShowMeYourKnits prompt: CABLES. I used to only knit cable knit projects. Then I found stranded colourwork 🙃 But I still dabble in cable knits here and there. I’ve gotten somewhat ambitious (and maybe crazy) and am knitting a pullover for my son (that he had better wear!). #knitsky
My progress so far on the Menton 2 pullover for my son. The yarn is a lovely heathered green and it is so hard to photograph! I’ve gotten the hang of the cable pattern and doing the cables without a cable needle, so the second sleeve is going in faster.

Yarn is Gathering Yarn’s Haynes Creek Heathers in colourway Cedar.A little closer view of the cables 😊 I used the tubular cast on for the cuffs and it turned out so lovely! I think I’d only ever used it on fingerless mitts before. The cover page of the Menton 2 pullover pattern, by Meghan Babin.

#ShowMeYourKnits : KNITTING HORROR STORIES 👻 In 2009 I knit a wool blanket while expecting my 2nd child. It didn’t survive our sleep deprivation after his birth. Felted in the dryer. Only photo is from the hospital 😕 I saved it all these years. Last Xmas my MIL made it into mitts for me ❤️🧶 #knitsky
My felted wool blanket from 2009 was sewn into mitts for me by my mother-in-law in 2024. I knit it while on bedrest while expecting my second child. It didn’t survive our sleep deprivation after he was born. It was felted in the dryer. The only photographic proof of its existence is from the hospital right after he was born 🙃Right mitten.

Had a wonderful 2 days of learning at the PEI Fibre Fest in Charlottetown. Thoroughly enjoyed the marketplace and picked up special items to add to my tools and stash. Learned about how to work better with hand painted yarn, took an intro to intarsia, and learned to make Dorset buttons. #knitsky 🧶
A good friend of mine, Laura, was vending at the market 😊 She creates her own ‘art batts’, handspun yarn, stitch markers, has great yarny merch (tees and sweatshirts), and more. Her business is called Louis and Jane.

Here we are modeling the vests we knit 😊 Mine is the Sea Faerdy vest.A little view of Laura’s art batts, fun yarny sweatshirt, stitch markers and more.Another friend was also vending her amazing handspun yarn and beautiful batts. This is her bubble yarn and it is so joyful! Her name is Sue Smith and her business is Paisley Defender. These are the three Dorset buttons that I learned to make during one of my classes. We started with the dark blue one (wool), then the light blue (#5 cotton thread), and then the fun one with the sheep (yes, that’s a sheep 🙃).

Excited to attend our local fibre festival this week! Have 3 interesting classes and a great festival marketplace to enjoy. Cast on my 2nd Musselburgh hat to have a portable knit to take with me. Still need to knit the button bands on my cardigan, and am working on a cable knit for my son 🧶 #knitsky
My Melby Yoke cardigan is almost done! Just need to knit the button bands and add buttons. Pattern is by Gudrun Johnston and yarn is Jamieson’s Spindrift. I’ve cut the steek, so I’m ready to get started as soon as I carve out some time.I cast on my second ever Musselburgh hat in order to have a portable knit to take with me to out local fibre festival. The yarn is a lovely self striping yarn from Mud Punch in a colourway with the best name: ‘Dagmar goes to Shetland’. I love its greens, peach, red and burgundy.Almost done knitting the first sleeve on the Menton 2 pullover for my son. I don’t knit cables as much anymore and had forgotten how long they take 🙃 At least I’ve learned to knit without a cable knit. That’s saving me tons of time!A close up of the cables on the Menton 2 sleeve. The colour of the yarn doesn’t accurately show in this photo unfortunately.

This week’s #ShowMeYourKnits theme is HATS 😊🧶 I’ve knit many a hat! Here are just four (and one isn’t quite finished yet). Colourwork and cables make for fun hats to knit 😊 Details in alt text. #knitsky
This year’s Shetland Wool Week hat, the Aal Ower Toorie was a super fun knit. I always love knitting with Jamieson’s yarn and this pattern was a great one! This is the Ridley Hat by Meghan Babin. I questioned my sanity knitting a ridiculous brim in 2x2 ribbing with a 2.25mm needle 🤪 But I loved knitting the cables.A Shetland Wool Week hat from a few years back. This is the Buggiflooer beanie. Knit up in Knit Picks Palette (this was before I discovered my love of knitting with Jamieson’s Spindrift). This is the Sunflower Power beanie. I have finished all the knitting and just need to sew down the brim. I finished it near the end of hat season last year. Love the crazy bright coloured yarn from Hello Stella. I won’t be hard to miss in this hat 🙃

This past weekend’s #ShowMeYourKnits prompt included things you knit that bring JOY ✨ I have to say that for the most part, all my knits have brought me joy and comfort too. I am particularly happy when knitting colourwork and when mastering a new to me knitting skill (most recently lace). #knitsky
Modeling my first Sea Faerdy vest by Gudrun Johnston (I’ve since knit a second one in a different colour scheme…see next photo). This was a joy to knit! I loved seeing the pattern take shape!

Knit in Jamieson’s of Shetland Spindrift. My seeding Sea Faerdy vest. I love how the change in colour scheme accentuates different parts of the pattern. I’m the darker colour scheme I find that the star pattern really pops. I’m this colour scheme I find that the diamonds pop more.

Also knit entirely in Jamieson’s of Shetland Spindrift.I’m currently knitting the Melby Yoke cardigan by Gudrun Johnston (while wearing the Peerie Shop Cardi by Mary Jane Mucklestone). I’m really looking forward to finishing the second sleeve and then joining in the round to complete the Fair Isle yoke 😊My first challenging lace knit. This is the Floriosa shawl by Justyna Lorkowska. This was a challenging knit and very hard on my hands. I had to take a few weeks off of knitting after I’d finished it. More breaks and stretching in the future!

Knit up in Julie Asselin Merletto in Rose Gold.

#ShowMeYourKnits prompt this past weekend was knits that brought joy or that I’d knit to care for others. I thought I’d share 2 hats (modeled by me) that I knit for two special people who were fighting cancer. Both have sadly since succumbed to the disease 💔 #knitsky #knittingforothers #knitforlove
I’m modeling a Musselburgh hat by Ysolda Teague. Knit in self striping yarn by Mud Punch in the colourway Dagmar goes to Shetland. The colours in the stripes include light and dark peachy tones, maroon, and three shades of green.

I knit this hat for my cousin (in Feb 2024) who was fighting an aggressive form of brain cancer. They sadly passed away in Nov 2024.The view of the Musselburgh hat from the top down.I am modeling the Leith Hat that I knit for a friend (in May 2024) who was fighting cancer. Also, went to a small locally owned toy store that has a wee yarn corner. Only needed 2.75mm DPNs 🙃 but these lace skeins of malabrigo were so gorgeous that I brought them home too 😍🧶
Four skeins of lace weight malabrigo yarn lay on a white countertop. They are 100% baby merino wool. Now to find a project that will do them justice 😍🧶

Summer’s end and back to school grind caught up with me. Haven’t shared much knitting lately. I knit a lot of small things this summer…kerchiefs and shawls as gifts. Easy to pick up & put down, not too taxing. Back to knitting my Melby Yoke cardi now. Loads of stockinette to get through 🙃 #knitsky 🧶
Outside on my back deck in the sun. Feet up on the outdoor coffee table and making progress on my Melby Yoke cardigan by Gudrun Johnston. It’s a fingering weight knit, and bottom up construction, so the miles and miles of stockinette I have to knit before the fun yoke may take me a good while. Not to mention the two sleeves that I also need to knit. I’m loving this combination of colours. It feels joyful to me. The MC is called Nighthawk. All yarn is from Jamieson’s.I stayed out knitting on the back deck so long that the sun moved around to the front of the house. Still have my feet up on the outdoor coffee table. Making more progress on my Melby Yoke cardigan. Wearing my Peerie Shop Cardi by Mary Jane Mucklestone.Moved to the front of the house to follow the sun 😊 Still plugging away at knitting my Melby Yoke cardi. I can’t wait to get to the lovely yoke! But first I have to knit the two sleeves and join them with the body in the round (this design is steeked). This is the colour scheme for the yoke on my Melby Yoke cardi. It’s my own play on the designer’s colour scheme. A bit more bright and joyful 😊 Looking forward to getting to this stage in the project. Knitting stockinette in fingering weight takes a loooooong time.

This week’s #ShowMeYourKnits theme is BABY 😊 There’s nothing quite so satisfying as knitting up a baby sweater in a fraction of the time of an adult one! Here are a few of my recent ones. Antler cardigan by Tin Can Knits, Curlicue Yoke and also Fox Baby yoke both by Claudia Quintanilla. #knitsky
A baby cardigan lies on a wooden coffee table. It is knit in red violet yarn, has a cable yoke, and has lovely chunky pottery floral buttons.

Pattern is by Tin Can Knits and is the Antler cardigan. The pattern includes adult sizes too.A baby sweater lies on a wooden coffee table. It is knit in hand painted dark blue yarn and has a curlicue pattern at the yoke that is knit in cream coloured yarn.

Pattern is Curlicue Yoke by Claudia Quintanilla.I have almost finished this sweater despite its unfinished state in this photo. It is the Fox Baby Yoke sweater by Claudia Quintanilla. Main colour is a deep green. The yoke has small fox faces all around the neck. I’ve since stitched in the eyes using duplicate stitch. All that’s left is to sew a button at the back of the neck where there’s a little gap to help it get over a baby’s head.

This week’s #ShowMeYourKnits prompt is SHAWLS 🧶 I have great fun knitting shawls in between sweaters and cardigans and other accessories. There are so many wonderful patterns out there! These are only a few of the ones that I’ve knit in the last year or so. More details in alt text.
The Fleur Shawl by Espace Tricot was a fun knit and it’s so cozy and squishy to wear 😊 Knit in Woolberry Fibre Co DK and Sweet Skein O Mine lace.I knit the full version of the Hansel hap back in March/April. The pattern is by Gudrun Johnston. I learned a lot and really had fun seeing it take shape. The main colour was Briggs and Little Sport and the contrast colours were all Jamieson’s Spindrift.I really love knitting the Dotted Rays shawl by Stephen West. This is my third one! It was a pattern that I quickly got the hang of and found was pretty portable 😊 Knit in Fleece Artist’s Organic Cottage Socks in their Thousand Islands colourway. This is the Aestlight Shawl by Gudrun Johnston. I love its mix of lace and garter stitch. Knit in Briggs and Little Sport in Sheep’s Grey.

I recently paused knitting my 2nd Sea Faerdy vest while traveling. I took along a super portable project, the Snaraness kerchief 🧶 I knit my 1st one in fingering weight yarn (Jamieson’s Spindrift) while waiting for my lace weight yarn to arrive (Fleece and Harmony Eldon lace). A fun knit! #knitsky
Two Snaraness kerchiefs lay on a wooden coffee table. Pattern is by Gudrun Johnston. Blue version was knit in fingering weight yarn (Jamieson’s Spindrift in colourway Teviot) while I was waiting for my order of lace weight yarn to arrive (Fleece and Harmony Eldon Lace in Pearl). The Eldon Lace yarn is 70% wool and 30% mohair, so there’s a bit of halo to it. I like both kerchiefs, but the lace weight one best accentuates the floral lace pattern. Two Snaraness kerchiefs lay on a wooden coffee table. You can just see the tips of the triangles in this photo. I was finally able to take a somewhat decent photo of my Foliosa shawl by Justyna Lorkowska 😊 It’s a design full of lovely details and I really enjoyed knitting it. I did find knitting with the lace weight yarn was hard on my hands. I had to take a break for a week or so after I finished! #knitsky
I am facing away from the camera and modeling my Foliosa lace shawl. I was finally dressed up for an occasion and remembered to take a (somewhat) good photo of my shawl.

This was definitely a challenging but enjoyable project for me. I’m relatively new to lace. Knitting this pattern with lace weight yarn really ended up hurting my hands and forearms a good deal. I had to take a week or so off knitting after I finished this shawl.

My adventures in colourwork continue 😊 I’m still working on my 2nd Sea Faerdy vest in the light colour scheme. I’m also swatching for the Melby Yoke cardigan 🧶 Going with the bright and happy colour scheme. Did a few experiments in my swatch and the final decision was an easy one for me 😊 #knitsky
Still working away on my second Sea Faerdy vest (pattern by Gudrun Johnston). This one is the light MC version that is offered in the pattern. I had to substitute in a different dark blue as I couldn’t find the one in the pattern in any Canadian shops. I’m really happy with the colour scheme. It’s amazing to me how different the pattern looks in the lighter colour scheme. Very different elements in the Fair Isle pattern are accentuated as compared to the dark colour scheme.I started swatching for Gudrun Johnston’s Melby Yoke cardigan yesterday. I’m using somewhat different colours than what is in the pattern. Not huge changes from her colour scheme, but I’m working with colours that I had on hand in my stash. I also had to find a MC that I could source enough balls of from a Canadian shop. I’m happy with my choices right off the bat. I did go on to test out a few other colours (see next photo) but ultimately I’m going with those shown here.My complete test swatch for my Melby Yoke cardigan. I had to knit a few other test colours to prove to myself that the ones I’d started with were THE colours 🙃 The ones are started with feel bright and happy to me 😊Here’s what the yoke in my Melby Yoke cardigan will look like 😊 I sure do love Fair Isle knitting!

This week’s #ShowMeYourKnits prompt is GARTER STITCH 😊 I’ve knit a number of lovely shawls that incorporate it. I love the portability of a garter st project. Some of my colourwork projects aren’t as easy to lug around. It’s nice to have a mix of projects on my needles. Details in alt text. #knitsky

Working on my 3rd Aestlight shawl 🧶 (a gift) Using Briggs & Little Sport in Sheep’s Grey. Why I enjoy the pattern: it’s portable & easy when knitting the garter st 🔺; the Bird’s Eye lace is fun to knit; the edging was a new skill for me (knit perpendicular to the initial knitting). #knitsky
Knitting my third Aestlight shawl by Gudrun Johnston. It starts with a garter stitch triangle until you have 152 sts across. Then you pick up the yarn overs on the outer edges of the triangle and you knit the Bird’s Eye lace (that’s the stage that I’m at now). Then comes the edging which is knit perpendicular to the lace. A really enjoyable pattern to knit.A closer up view of the Bird’s Eye lace on my Aestlight shawl. Knit up in Briggs and Little Sport in Sheep’s Grey.My very first Aestlight shawl 😊

My 2 swatches for the Sea Faerdy vest. The pattern includes 2 charted colour schemes: one with a dark MC and one with a light MC. My swatches aren’t exact matches to the pattern colour schemes for 2 reasons: difficulty in finding certain colours available, and personal choice. #knitsky

I enjoyed knitting the Sea Faerdy vest so much that I decided to swatch in the second colour scheme just for fun 😊 I love how changing up the colours accentuates different parts of the pattern when compared to the first colour scheme that I knit 🧶 #knitsky
A knitted Fair Isle swatch sits on a coffee table. The pattern is the Sea Faerdy vest by Gudrun Johnston. The pattern comes with charts for two colour schemes. I’ve knit a vest in the colour scheme with the dark green main colour (with several colour substitutions based on what I had on hand or was available online). This is the colour scheme with the light main colour. I’ve only had to switch out one colour: the dark blue. I couldn’t find the Atlantic colourway anywhere in Canada, and only check the Woolly Thistle in the US. So I substituted in Nighthawk, which is a lovely colour!

#Knitsky did you mark Worldwide Knit in Public Day? I only learned of it few yrs ago. Most of my knitting life I knit at home. A few yrs ago, a group met in a local park (in 10°C 🥶). Last year we met in a cafe. This year I met a lovely friend at a park. Always nice to gather with fellow knitters 😊🧶

My Sea Faerdy is almost done!! In the selfie, I’ve just finished the armhole ribbing (but not sewn in any ends). 2nd photo: knitting is done and ends sewn in. Just 2 more steps: needle felt the areas with steeks (Gudrun suggests this to remove bulk), then wash & block. Very happy with it 🧶 #knitsky

Holy moly, I’ve finished all of the stranded knitting for my Sea Faerdy vest! Yes, it looks a little wacky with the three steeks not yet cut, but I’m getting there 😊 Going to take my time with all the next steps so I don’t mess up after all that knitting! #knitsky

So whenever you arrive at the accent colour in the pattern you knit the special textured stitch until all the accent colour is used up, and then you resume knitting in pattern. So the unique textured stitches pop up randomly throughout the pattern. This was a really fun knit for me. This is the Pressed Flowers cowl by Amy Christoffers. I really loved knitting it but have yet to graft the ends together and wear it 😬 I really am such a process knitter! It was so fun to see the flowers appear as I knit. Background colour is Knit Picks Wool of the Andes in Midnight Heather. Hand dyed yarn is Spincycle Yarns Dyed in the Wool in Holy Toledo.

Making great progress on my Sea Faerdy vest 😊 I think I’m on the home stretch. Had a little delay as there was an error in the pattern, so was waiting on confirmation from the designer as to the correction. So now I’m back at it, steeks and all 💪🏻💪🏻🧶 #knitsky #FairIsle
I’m holding up my current knitting work in progress: the Sea Faerdy vest by Gudrun Johnston 😊 It’s been such a fun knit. Making steady progress on my Sea Faerdy vest 🧶 It’s such a fun knit and I’m really happy with the colours that I chose 😊 One more repeat of the larger motif and then I start adding steeks for the armholes. Painting with yarn is my meditation 😊 #ShowMeYourKnits : ‘what’s on your needles?’ #knitsky
I’m holding up my current knitting work in progress. It’s a Fair Isle pattern with two main motifs. The pattern is called the Sea Faerdy vest and it’s my Gudrun Johnston. I’m knitting it up in Jamieson’s of Shetland Spindrift yarn. The main colour is a low it deep green called Conifer. Other colours include a nice cherry red, two pinks, a bluey green, a goldish brown, and an aqua blue 😍

This week’s #ShowMeYourKnits theme is ‘what’s on your needles’ 🧶 My Sea Faerdy vest is finally at a stage where I’ve knit each motif once 😊 Makes for a better photo than just a load of ribbing 🙃 I’m happy with how it’s progressing and love my colour choices. Here’s to it fitting nicely too! #knitsky

First motif knit on my Sea Faerdy vest 🧶 Can’t wait to see the next motif alongside it! Stranded colourwork sure has my heart ❤️ I’ve knit a deeper ribbing since I’m not fond of cropped styles. I chose that instead of adding pattern repeats. Hopefully it gives me just the extra length I need 😊

I’ve finally started knitting my Sea Faerdy vest (pattern by Gudrun Johnston) 🧶 I love stranded colourwork! Seeing the pattern take shape is such fun. Just one more row. It’s #ShowMeYourKnits time and the theme is PURPLE 😊 I don’t wear much purple it seems (as I scroll through my Ravelry projects). I’ve knit a greyish purple sweater for a cousin’s baby though. And I think maybe the second project photo here is maybe not really purple but rather red violet 🤔 #knitsky
A baby cable knit sweater lies on a hardwood floor. The pattern comes from a book that I purchased in maybe 2004. The pattern is called Aran Pullover and it’s by Melanie Falick and Kristin Nicholas. I can’t recall the name of the book and I don’t have it close at hand right now. If anyone wanted to know the name, just ask and I’ll go find it once I’m able.

Well, I went back to my stash to improve my swatch 🙃 I think it was worth it! What’s changed? Compare the top and bottom motifs: top has Moorgrass running thru the middle (the heathered green), bottom has Eucalyptus (the solid green). I think the solid works best. It helps the pattern pop better 🧶
A Fair Isle knitted swatch sits in my lap. The colour experiments continue on my Sea Faerdy vest swatch! I went back to my stash to see if I could improve the colour scheme. This last effort involved switching out one colour. What’s changed? Compare the top and bottom motifs: the top one has Moorgrass (the heathered green) running through the middle. It kind of obscures the squares of Bracken. In the bottom motif, I replaced the Moorgrass with Eucalyptus which is more solid. I think it helps the Bracken squares pop better 😊

Enough swatching. Now to choose my Sea Faerdy vest colours 😊 The bottom motifs use Eggshell blue…too much like white (ie. bland). Next 2 motifs use Aqua and I much prefer it. Also tried lighter pink for the edges of the large motif. I find it’s too light. Glad I swatched so I could see it 🧶 #knitsky
I’m holding up a knitted Fair Isle swatch (it’s still on my cable needles). It is for a pattern called the Sea Faerdy vest. I’ve experimented with some colour options and have switched up a few colours to see what I like best. It’s a tough call!!

It’s #ShowMeYourKnits time again and CARDIGANS is the theme 🧶 I love cardigans and have so many in my Ravelry queue. Too many fun projects, not enough time 🙃 Here are three favourites from my wardrobe: Clotilde cardigan, Peerie Shop Cardi, and Squish Cardigan. More details in Alt text. #knitsky
A mirror selfie of me wearing the Clotilde cardigan by Knitting for Olive. It has a lovely diamond lace pattern. It is knit up holding two strands of Knitting for Olive heavy merino and two strands of their soft silk mohair. I knit mine in the colourway Rose Clay.I am standing outside in late summer 2024 wearing my recently completed Peerie Shop Cardi by Mary Jane Mucklestone. It is knit in Ístex Léttlopi and has a lovely Fair Isle yoke design. The body and sleeves are in a deep bluey green. The button band, collar, cuffs and waist ribbing are in a lighter bluey green. The yoke has ice blue, fuchsia, olive and celery green in it.The Squish Cardigan by Andrea Rangel lays on my blocking mats. It has a lovely all over cable. It was quite a feat to knit this one! It was knit in pieces and then sewn together. Knit in Knit Picks Wool of the Andes in Mink Heather. Sadly I misjudged the sizing and it was too small for me. Handed down to my eldest who finds it nice and cozy 😊

I’m back at the design process for my own Fair Isle yoke sweater. I realized that having a complete swatch of the exact design was going to be helpful for incorporating it into a sweater. This design project is a huge challenge for me, and slow going, but I’m keen to bring it to life. #knitsky 🧶
I am sitting on a sheepskin on my couch. In my lap I am holding a Fair Isle swatch that I’m knitting, and Mary Jane Mucklestone’s book ‘200 Fair Isle Motifs’ is open to the page of one of the key motifs in a Fair Isle yoke of my own design. I’ve been puttering at this design since September of 2024. Back then, I was going to design a yoke and try and plug the math into a sweater pattern that I’d recently knit. Then I happened upon sign ups for an online course with Kim McBrien Evans where she taught us the intricacies of designing a top down yoke sweater based on your own measurements. So I’m hoping to marry that new knowledge with my yoke design. It’s ambitious and slow going, but I’m keen to bring it to life.

I’m knitting a complete and exact swatch of my design as I believe it will come in handy not just for measuring my current gauge, but it will help me visualize where the motifs will fall as I plan and knit the sweater. I am not a knitwear designer. I am learning as I go 🙃A more close up view of the Fair Isle swatch that I’m knitting. It will be a useful reference as I work on bringing it to life in a sweater.

I started this idea/project back in Sept 2024. I first picked motifs in repeats that could be fit into an existing pattern that I’d already knit. So that guided my motif choices. Then I swatched many many times over to find pleasing colour combinations. Then I paired the larger motifs with smaller ones. And then I used a design app to play with different repeats to see what they’d look like without having to knit more swatches. And now I’ve arrived at an 83 row design for which I have put in the work to pick the colour and pair motifs. It feels like quite an accomplishment. I’ve sure learned a lot!!This is a digital mock up of what the design will look like. It was created by first taking photos of the parts of my swatch that I liked the colour combinations in. Then cropping them in a design app and merging them together. It’s imperfect, but it saved me a lot of knitting!

I’ve been planning to knit a sweater with Fair Isle yoke of my own design for a while. I work on it sporadically between other things. Today I got out my stash to see what I had for the new Sea Faerdy vest, and then checked what I had for my sweater. A fun exercise. Need a few more balls. #knitsky
I got out my stash today to see what I already have on hand for knitting a sweater with a Fair Isle yoke of my own design. Laid out on my table are balls of all the 16 colours that will be in the sweater (the main colour balls (in Camel) are on bags at top left). Blues, greens, red violets, yellows and camel. The swatch that I knit to test out various colour combinations is at lower left. That’s not exactly how the yoke will look, since it has some extra bits in it and my colour tests. See next photo for a digital mock up of how the yoke will look.

What’s next? Figuring out gauge and all the math to knit up an actual sweater 🙃I took a photo of my swatch and cropped each motif that was knit in the colours I wanted. Then I digitally stitched them together using the Procreate app to get an idea of what it will look like knit up. It’s a little wonky in places because the swatch wasn’t lying exactly horizontal in the photo, but you get the idea. This is the vest that I’ve been eagerly awaiting the release of. It came out today. Pattern is by Gudrun Johnston and it’s called the Sea Faerdy vest. The balls of yarn in the photo are what I have from my stash to knit the project. They’re Jamieson’s of Shetland Spindrift. I’ll need to order a few more before I can get started.

I’ve arrived at the leafy border on my Foliosa shawl 🧶🌸 The chart looks pretty complex 😳 Based on the written instructions, I’ll repeat the chart 27 times 🙃 This might take a while. There are some interesting stitches in there…bobbles, cables where I’ll need 2 cable needles. Here we go! #knitsky
My current knitting work in progress sits on a wooden coffee table. The woven bag holding my yarn is in the top right of the photo. The project is called the Foliosa shawl. It started with a small garter stitch section. After that, there is a twisted rib band, a flower motif lace section, another twisted rib band, another floral section, and lastly another twisted rib band. I’m now about to knit the leafy border onto the shawl. It’s a pretty complex pattern and I’m thinking it will take me a good while. You can see the chart in the next photo.

I’m knitting this in Julie Asselin’s Merletto in Rose Gold.I’m about to start the leafy border on my Foliosa Shawl (pattern by Justyna Lorkowska). The part that I’ve knit so far lies in my lap. The woven bag for my yarn is partly visible at right of the photo. The chart for the leafy border is propped up so I can read it. It’s pretty complex. There are 24 rows in each repeat of the chart, and I have to repeat it at least 27 times I believe. Oh my! This could take a while. There are many tedious stitches in and amongst the knits and purls, including bobbles and cable stitches that require two cable needles!

More progress on my Foliosa shawl 🧶 I find the floral motif sections to be fun to knit (as long as I pay attention and don’t forget the yarn overs!). I’m on the last floral band, then on to the last twisted rib band, before diving into the detailed, and quite wide, leaf motif outer border 😊 #knitsky

Making progress on my Foliosa shawl 🧶 Still getting the hang of knitting with slippery yarn after many projects in lovely wooly yarns. The floral motif lace is fun to see emerge, other than the fact that I need to pay close attention to what I’m doing (I unraveled 14 rows last night 😬). #knitsky

Just started my Foliosa shawl 🧶 After knitting so many projects in lovely wooly yarns, it’s taken me a bit to get used to this soft, slippery yarn. I’m reminded of the LYS sign that someone shared a while ago. It said ‘Knitting keeps me from unraveling’ and I couldn’t agree more. Working on a shawl in hand dyed limited edition Briggs & Little Sport yarn 🧶 I love how the colours are highlighted uniquely by the different stitch patterns. #knitsky
I’m holding up my current knitting work in progress. It’s an Aestlight shawl by Gudrun Johnston. The yarn is hand dyed limited edition yarn from Briggs and Little 🇨🇦 It is a mix of pinks with touches of light purple throughout. The shawl is made up of a main garter stitch triangle (that is knit first) which is then bordered by a lovely section of bird’s eye lace. Lastly, the pointed edging is knit along two edges of the shawl. I’m looking forward to washing and blocking it and seeing the details pop.

I probably don’t need another shawl, but they’re a nice meditative project for me. I’ve just received 2 new yarns and am thinking I may knit these 2 shawls. I’m waiting on a vest pattern to be released in May, so this will tide me over until then 🧶 Details in alt text. What do you think #knitsky ?
A hand knit shawl with beautiful lace work hangs from the branch of a tree. It is knit in a beautiful hand dyed yarn in a dusty rose. The pattern is called Foliosa and is by Justyna Lorkowska.

This photo is from the Ravelry page for the pattern.A model is shown wearing a hand knit shawl with a lace pattern that resembles flowers (to me anyway). It is knit in a yarn that looks to be a very light grey, almost white. The pattern is called Posy and is by Tim Can Knits.

I’ve finished knitting my Aal Ower Toorie 🧶 What a fun project!! Now to wash and block it. Some day I’d like to use this all over pattern and colour scheme in a vest. There are 2 vests I’d like to knit next…Gudrun Johnston’s upcoming May release, and Wilma Malcomson’s Seaweed Slipover. #knitsky
I’m modeling my just finished Aal Ower Toorie, the hat designed for this year’s Shetland Wool Week. It’s got an all over Fair Isle motif. I knit mine in colours I had on hand, so it’s very close to the colour scheme in the pattern that they called Vintage (there are two other colour schemes in the pattern). There are two shades of brown, an off white, a yellow, a periwinkle blue, a crimson red, a mossy green and a salmon.I’m modeling my just finished Aal Ower Toorie, the hat designed for this year’s Shetland Wool Week.
