Mars Special, developed by 3.5-Inch-Dō and published by LL Palace, has now been translated into English with a bugfix! (Also, it's my birthday today!) It's a UFO Catcher game for the PC-9801. It has an adult CG gallery so it's for subscribers-only. tangopunk.com

I've been dabbling with creating maps for the first Sailor Moon game released on the Game Boy. I've only done Stage 1 so far, but I'm pretty happy with it! In-game the view is zoomed in so you barely see any of the road, and it was harder to stitch together than I expected.

I was about to question the use of straight lines on artwork for a succubus, but at least it drew my attention enough to the card art to notice the Culdcept Begins language is a simple alphabet cipher!

The backgrounds look great in Culdcept Begins. The characters and monsters… well, I’ll get used to them, but they feel more like flat pictures than actual characters.

It’s Culdcept Begins Day! It seems I was supposed to get some kind of early purchase code, but either they forgot to send the email, or it’s not on the UK eShop yet.

Interactive Fiction parody from ‘How to be a Complete Bastard’ by Adrian Edmondson, which received its own computer game. I thought it would be timely with England and Argentina at the World Cup semifinals.

Game gossip from the 90s can proliferate through the internet to this very day. All talk I could find online for Space Hulk: Vengeance of the Blood Angels said "Don't get the PlayStation version. Get the Saturn version." If I'd have believed them, I wouldn't enjoy video game.

When it comes to Space Hulk for DOS, I was more entertained by the vocal song sample while the game starts up. I never knew Warhammer used to have its own music label and Brian May performing on guitar! www.youtube.com/watc...

The first Space Hulk computer game for DOS advertised a brand new story-driven campaign called Deathwing. (It's not that story-driven at all, it's just a bunch of different map layouts, and they added some story text for each one in the manual rather than the game.)

Similar to how I forget that some people are new to emulation, sometimes I forget people have been tricked into thinking that cheating in a single player game is always bad. I love it. It lets me have fun in games I wouldn't otherwise enjoy.

Sometimes I forget that people are new to emulation, so I tried to keep it straightforward while still covering complexities! (In fact, I'm so forgetful that I end up using my own guides to remind myself of hotkeys.)

I don't think people understand how much I enjoy AI vs AI matches in games, and modern-day AI lets me play with that concept even more. Last weekend I spent my free time playing out a full gender-swapped double elimination bracket for Fatal Fury 1 on the Mega Drive.

PlayStation can delete your purchases if you don't log in for three years. Some people say that's plenty of time. I don't. Looking at my 'unplayed games' tab on Steam, I bought (and never played) Worms Crazy Golf in 2011. I still plan to play it some day.

Writing about the 1993 release of Space Hulk this weekend!
Where else to go after Space Crusade than Space Hulk? It was the next computer game released based on Games Workshop’s Space Marines. I need to blast some more aliens in narrow corridors!

Originally released for DOS and Amiga in 1993, it later received a CD-ROM version in 1994, followed by a Japanese-language version on the PC-9801 in 1995. The CD-ROM version had higher-quality voice clips and more missions, so I thought it would be the best one to play. I was mistaken there, but we’ll get to that later.

Everything looked great from the outset. It’s a new spin on the Space Hulk board game, where they’ve added real-time first-person views of each of your squad members, letting you feel the dread of walking through corridors where a Genestealer could jump out at you from any direction.

It has plenty of missions, both from the board game itself and brand new ones for the computer version! Alongside the mission selection, there are Basic Training missions, Advanced Training missions, and an entire campaign mode with new linked levels that you play sequentially, named Deathwing.

Combine all of that with beautiful stylised VGA graphics, and I was excited!

Space Crusade journeys, looking into the three playable chapters. Blood Angels, Imperial Fist, and Ultra Marines!
The Three Chapters

I keep wanting to call them factions or squadrons, but in Space Crusade, they’re chapters. They’re not just different colours to distinguish the three players, but also have different possible orders and equipment choices that give each one a unique play style.

The three playable Space Marine chapters are:

* Blood Angels, who wear red armour and whose perks tend to favour getting into melee combat.
* Imperial Fist, who wear yellow armour and have a more balanced loadout for the commander. Perks allow the commander to wield a heavy weapon but move as if he were carrying a light weapon, and choose whether to fire a heavy bolter or plasma gun each turn.
* Ultra Marines, who wear blue armour and focus on slow heavy weaponry. Their main skill is scanning the entire ship for three ‘blips’ (positions of aliens or other objects) each turn.

Alongside the three playable chapters, there are enemy soldiers called Chaos Space Marines controlled by the alien side. These are depicted in this game as a dark, mottled green colour.

The basic goal in each mission is to complete the mission objective and then return to your own chapter’s docking claw. The docking claw acts like the squad’s entry and exit point.

The opposing aliens and dreadnoughts are always controlled by the computer.
