bri ☀️ @tangledtulip.bsky.social · 23/08/2026i might be playing into the hand of the original poster in saying all this but it reminded me of the fact that the current iteration of the rules aren't really the foundation as to where everything lies, it's simply the most popular iteration at the moment bc of the jack-of-all-trades interpretation 110
bri ☀️ @tangledtulip.bsky.social · 23/08/2026the rules don't matter as much as any older iteration/OSR framework, and the rules are pushing against a lot of the fun in tactical infinity - it all creates a space where the first interaction with the game is "i roll" and not "i do" - ofc mileage may vary depending on dm style and whatnot 120
bri ☀️ @tangledtulip.bsky.social · 23/08/2026Feel like a world that's alive & dangerous have become non-essential procedures that the game master has to work to focus on, which means they have to work a lot harder to make that sort of game feel tangible. i say this as someone who has done a game from lvl 1-20, it ends up feeling like 120
bri ☀️ @tangledtulip.bsky.social · 23/08/2026like, the original variants of d&d, ad&d, b/x, all have a lot more concrete Dungeon Procedures (for example) that make the games feel a lot nicer to play, and it may be because of the danger level - in modern iterations, the crunch that feels necessary to make the space 120
bri ☀️ @tangledtulip.bsky.social · 23/08/2026i'd say unfortunately the current iteration of d&d has become essentially a Universal ttrpg, which means that the procedures therein are not really that Solid for any one type of playstyle, which can be good! but it feels like the details are Sanded Down 130
