Finished my take on Grant Abbitt's Dungeon Door tutorial. It was more time consuming than the other's I've worked on, but I really like the results. Pointiness-based procedural textures are fantastic. I do wish he had taken the tutorial all the way to the lighting stage, though.
A stylized dungeon door with dramatic lighting but no background. A demonic skull with ram's horns and glowing eyes sits on the keystone at the top.

The coloring begins! I'm digging this method of procedural colors for a couple reasons: 1) My brief foray into UV unwrapping wasn't great (room for improvement, for sure). 2) Using the sharpness modifier and gradients feels a lot like using washes and edge highlighting on minis. #b3d

8v8 classic BattleTech, tonight, on 4 adjacent hex maps. Finally taken this over-embellishes over-washed Griffin for a spin.
A Griffin battlemech that looks like it sat in a barn for the last 50 years, but was well loved before that. A pinup is painted on the shoulder pad, barely visible under the grime.

Part 1 of Grant Abbit's "Dungeon Door" tutorial done. Need to put it down for a bit to work on a different project but so far I'm really happy with it. I definitely overcomplicated it by sketching out ram horns and a latch/padlock rather than just a ring handle. (This is my third Blender tutorial).
Crude 3D model of a dungeon door with no textures in front of the sketch it's based on.

Anything piloted by a human that needs some reaction speed, and be flexible in use, makes sense with a human body plan. Our brains literally have a billion years of evolution to be good at piloting this body config and no others. Everything else is either more mental overhead, or less flexible.

Current progress on my first round of mechs meant to have a place in canon BattleTech. Just locked the paint in with a coat of future polish. Next step is black and brown wash, matte varnish, gloss for the windshields, then basing.
A Wolverine, Rifleman, Shadowhawk, and Marauder painted in the Grey Death Legion grey camo and (in this case a little too much) red detailing.Jaime Wolf's Archer and Natasha Kerensky's Dire Wolf.

Entrapta from She-Ra because ADHD and the need to tinker can override reason.David from Camp Camp because he means well and is insufferably naive except for when he isn't.Sypha from Castlevania because she knows a ton about religion and still finds herself on the opposite sides from both God and the Devil. My bases for the last couple posts were printed by a friend using these STLs: www.thingiverse.com/thing:4912529 Some tweaking may need done if you want to use them on BattleTech maps and have the same base-to-line gap as BattleTech minis. The modern plastic ones, anyway.
Miniatures and bases set on a BattleTech map featuring a hex grid. Left to right, top to bottom: Gundam Artifact Nightingale on size 3 base, empty size 2 base, BattleTech Rifleman, and an empty size 4 base.

That escalated quickly. Gundam Assault Kingdom figures seem to work well for size 4 Lancer bases. They're truly enormous compared to every size beneath them. I feel like Gundam 1/144 would be size 5 and 1/100 would be size 6(!). That's getting into Armored Core boss scale encounters, for sure.
Miniatures placed on various sizes of multi-hex bases. Left to right: Gundam Artifact Nightingale (size 3), BattleTech Vindicator (size 1), Gundam Assault Kingdom Mk-2 Titan (size 4), BattleTech Centurion (size 1), Gundam Artifact Hi-v (size 2).

I'm experimenting with Gundam Artifact as miniatures for Lancer by @orbitaldropkick.bsky.social. Hi-v on the left needs a flying peg to keep funnels from blocking adjacent models. Byarlant Custom (whose head is still in the couch) in the middle almost doesn't need the third hex of a size 2 base.

I severely underestimated the translucency of this fingernail decal. I knew there wasn't any white pigment, but I'd assumed that the pigment that *was* there was more opaque. Still looks neat, just way more subtle than intended.

Ok. The work is paying off. I love these Army Painter Speed Paints. Next steps will be some solid metallics, followed by decals (which inspired the color scheme), weathering, base, topcoat.

First test with speed paint and I chose the worst subject for it, but I'm learning a lot about how it works. Also, next time it would save time to not worry about the white top-spray and stick with the grey primer as a base.

The plan is something like this: Krylon primer ✅, Krylon white from the top for general shading ✅, black wash to deepen eventual shadows, dry brush some highlights, THEN color in the form of Army Painter Speed Paints. I'll figure out where to go from there...
