Dr. Richard N. Zare (Stanford) will give his Analytical Student-Invited seminar "Electrical Discharges Between Water Microdroplets in a Spray: A Possible Mechanism for Transforming Nonlife into Life on Early Earth" at 11:30 AM on Tuesday in 2104 CHEM. Join us!
The seminar flyer includes the following abstract: The Earth is approximately 4.54 billion years old and was initially too hot to support life as we know it. As the planet cooled, the first signs of microbial life emerged around 3.5 billion years ago. But how did this transformation occur? The Zare lab’s research focuses on understanding the processes that could transform simple abiotic gases, such as dinitrogen (N₂), methane (CH₄), carbon dioxide (CO₂), and ammonia (NH₃), into basic organic molecules containing carbon-nitrogen (C-N) bonds. These molecules are essential for the formation of amino acids, which are needed to create peptides and proteins, as well as nucleic acids, which are the building blocks of RNA and DNA. This presentation will propose a new mechanism for synthesizing the necessary components to create simple, single-celled living systems.

His biography is also given: Dr. Zare is the Marguerite Blake Wilbur Professor of Natural Science and Chemistry at Stanford University, where he became a Howard Hughes Medical Institute Professor in 2006. A pioneer in laser techniques to investigate molecular-level chemical reactions, he has made significant contributions to physical chemistry and nanoscale analysis. With over 900 publications, 50 patents, and 4 books, his research and teaching excellence have earned him numerous accolades, including the National Medal of Science and the Wolf Prize in Chemistry. He is also a member of prestigious organizations like the National Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
