Grand Final was heartbreak, I am home elevenish hours later than intended due to flight cancellation, and I have no chance of catching up on the internet. But my accommodation had a fascinating wall of books (full set of Australian Law Reports and English law history, anyone?).

One heart attack later, and the Dockers are in the grand final... 💜💜💜

I saw all the wildflowers and seven echidnas and one numbat and a mob of kangaroos (unexpected in that area, if utterly normal elsewhere).
Three cowslip orchids growing closely together. Yellow with magenta flecks and a point of cream. A close up of a kangaroo in the sunshine looking towards the camera. Big ears, brown with paler belly, relaxed stance, fluffy. Spider orchid, green with deep red stripes, a spidery face, and subtle variations from a million other spider orchids so subtype is unknown to me.

When I was a baby writer, I was taught 'to be' was so bad, avoid it at all costs, etc. In retrospect, the original rule was probably don't use passive voice (a rule with its own problems obviously) that had then been passed on to an impressionable me in a misunderstood form.

Went out to dinner with friends and then, lo, there was a bookstore open next to the ramen place. We all bought books, of course.
Two books lying on a bed. The first, Spycraft, by Nadine Akkerman and Pete Langman, is black with silver and blue text and a historical spy. The second, In the Lives of Puppets by TJ Klune, is predominantly green with trees and treehouses.

A ball of cat.
A tightly curled up black cat, nose tucked into tail tucked into paw. Ear is clearly visible.

I have once again failed to do better at Hugo voting. I think I've managed to do worse. At least I got to read (and play) some really good things anyway! (And I should probably give up on my last minute but maybe if I stare at some more of the art or...)

At least when I woke up to see this, the site was already down. I can see via a google search they did have my single DSF story though :( Hopefully it stays down.

All of Tansy Rayner Roberts' books are just sheer fun. I look forward to this one! (Once I charge my kobo...)

Watching Gruen. Which means I am watching ads I would normally hit skip on or ignore if I can't skip as soon as possible. There's probably something wrong with this. (I'm still cringing at a bunch of them though so, you know, it's not me.)

Library book haul. Three more than I intended to get because libraries are dangerous >>
A stack of library books. From top to bottom are A Fellowship of Bakers and Magic by J Penner, A Fellowship of Librarians and Dragons by J Penner, The Incandescent by Emily Tesh, Death of the Author by Nnedi Okorafor, and Wooing the Witch Queen by Stephanie Burgis.

They found the sunshine
Two cats, one black, one tabby, back to the camera, as they sit at a closed screen door where the only sunshine available on a cold day creeps in.

I went to some music.
A stage, with lights currently in blues and pinks, shining down on a band and a full orchestra. In the foreground, the bass player leaping forward, in the mid-foreground, the electric guitarist bowed down as he rocks out, and in the far-foreground, Tim Freedman, lead singer, barely visible, at his piano. The conductor is mid-photo, and mostly visible is the strings section.

I am pretending the cat is sitting basically on my arm because he loves me. Not because it's a wet food day and I went into the kitchen a moment ago so clearly it is also wet food time.

Hugo reading: I finished my current series, which just happened to be a Hugo nom series, and read one of the novellas (and started playing Dispatch). But now my new Murderbot is here and even though the library books are right there I just want to re-read all the Murderbot and...

Saw posts about the new Murderbot and got excited, but, no, it'll be a week in Australia before they can even ship my copy ; ; (I shouldn't complain. Books can be delayed six months in Australia. A week is good. But still.)

Really pleased my library not only has all of the Hugo nominated novels available, it also has all the novellas! And some of the Lodestar noms. I feel like this is rare. Now I just need to find the oomph to read something new that isn't just nice and gentle...

Went camping over Easter. There was a little bird bath with many birds.
An action shot of a scarlet robin mid-bath with water splashing up around him. The background is all grey-brown stone and sand, and the robin's bright red breast and black and white feathers pop. The same scarlet robin mid-bath, now interrupted, and looking back towards the camera, small and round and beautiful.

I forgot I was sitting on the edge of my seat because there was a cat behind me. There is no longer a cat behind me, but a rather offended one down the hallway.

I thought I disliked the misleading mobile game ads, but having now been getting a slew of snake oil ads, I'll take the game ones. The most they'll do is irritate someone who goes to download a game and discovers it's nothing like the ad. Snake oil ones are trying to kill people :(

I tried to make my nails New Year's-y. Messy, but not so bad I felt the need to wipe them clean.
Close up of very non-professionally painted nails. Black background with splodges of colour for fireworks on each nail. Uneven but gives the right effect.

He really felt I needed more spell checks and the like.
A tabby cat's head resting on a keyboard with pretty glowing lights, and an unfortunate amount of cat hair visible between the keys. He is absolutely close enough to hit multiple keys.

I went on holiday. It was lovely. This is a red panda at Melbourne Zoo.
Adorable red panda curled up on a tree branch. Its cute face is looking at the camera, and an enormously fluffy tail dominates the curl.

A royal hakea, a shrub with wavy, prickly leaves with veined green edges, and the interiors starting from dead, then bright red-orange, then orange, then yellow at the top.

Attempting to take photos of one of my cats (he is black, it is really hard) and apparently I caught him in a moment of heartbreak.
A slightly out of focus, but not badly so, picture of a silky black cat on a computer chair. Something in the angle or the droop of his whiskers or furrowed brow makes him look consumed by sadness.

All my birthday books together at last. Took me a while to get to Stefan's in the city, then I had to wait for the books from the interwebs.
A pile of books, from top to bottom: The Tomb of Dragons by Katherine Addison, Ghostdrift by Suzanne Palmer, New Adventures in Space Opera edited by Jonathan Strahan, The Teller of Small Fortunes by Julie Leong, The Diamond in the Window by Jane Langton, Dreadful by Caitlin Rozakis, Unexploded Remnants by Elaine Gallagher, and Lost Ark Dreaming by Suyi Davies Okungbowa.

My parents got me one of the Rolife book nook kits as a gift. Nice and straightforward to make, and it's very pretty finished.
A warmly-lit book nook with a scene of a Japanese canal or similar, with a tram in the background and cherry trees and buildings as the walls. It is all made of wood and is stylised. The books surrounding it are barely seen in darkness.

First football of the year, Freo v Indigenous All Stars. I was happy with whomever winning... but I wanted a close game, and it turned out to be a bit of a thrashing.

I saw a friend on the way home! I never seen a turtle in that park. He was making his way up towards the houses when he saw me and froze. I'm sure he had completely legitimate business that way, but I was happier when I'd gone past that he u-turned back to the water.
A small picture, taken from afar so as not to scare the turtle, of an oblong turtle in a patch of grass. Not much detail is discernible, but you can see the long neck.
