SF’s dystopian billboards (also tracked and theorized so brilliantly bt @dellsystem.bsky.social ) are meant to appeal to the extractivist billionaire CEO class, not even your average small potatoes VC or AI startup techbro. And extracting from you and the planet is in fact the entire appeal
Just as Fox News sometimes runs segments with exactly one viewer in mind (President Donald Trump), these billboards have a target audience in the low double digits. It’s unlikely there are billboards for these companies anywhere else in the world, but these companies nevertheless claim world domination. They can justify their valuations only by promising to destroy not just your job, but your entire line of work; by strip-mining your posts, comments, photos. And they can scale only by building a gigantic data center near you, sucking up your water and polluting your

Pretty good summary of why people are so pissed off about data centers, the physical representations of the technology companies keep saying is going to take everyone’s jobs away
But when Saline residents finally had their chance to speak, a volley of pointed questions followed. They asked about the emissions from the fossil fuels that would be used to generate power for the data center; the bright lights from the construction site shining into children’s bedrooms late at night and before dawn; and local roads that had been rendered dangerouso by constant construction-related traffic. None of these impassioned complaints appeared to engender much sympathy from the board, or indeed from the three Related Digital executives who were sitting against the wall observing the proceedings.

Whoa establishing AI guardrails in schools is part of the newly won OEA agreement with Oakland Unified School District
Beyond compensation, this agreement:
• Makes important improvements to working and learning conditions
• Strengthens class size commitments
• Enhances preparation time for elementary teachers
• Establishes clear guardrails around the use of artificial intelligence in schools
• Reinforces safety protections for staff
• Formalizes dedicated intervention and enrichment time to ensure students who need additional support receive it consistently and equitably
At the heart of this agreement is our shared responsibility to Oakland's students. It reflects our commitment to provide our educators with competitive compensation and professional supports, and give our students the stable thriving schools they deserve

This report is how I have channeled my rage as the tech industry has grown in wealth and power at the expense of workers, communities, and the environment. The old mechanisms of reform aren’t sufficient in a time of AI ascendance and data center accelerationism datasociety.net/library/turn...

Now Meta’s decision to go all in on the single most energy-intensive form of generative software, in a way that can only work through brute-force mass production and cannot be boycotted or turned off by users, will almost certainly boost a fossil fuel industry still smarting from the unexpected growth of wind, solar, and climate regulations

From our intro to the collection, which should be out in a few months 🔮
The black boxed nature of algorithms imparts to their inner workings a sense of mystery, turning programmers into sorcerers. Critics have observed the metaphysical dimensions of predictive technologies such as large language models (LLMs), and where some users see in them the doom of potential extinction, others see the ability to communicate with the dead or achieve digital immortality. In their omnipresence and putative prescience, even more mundane contemporary media technologies take on occult attributes, whether channeled through Alexa’s disembodied voices or Co–Star’s astrological push notifications. Media’s capacity to speak to the spirit realm—through radio static, telegraphic co-presence, or the creepy shadows of Kirlian photography—precede the digital, even as algorithms vector and intensify these occult energies in new ways. Like pre-digital forms of spirit communication and divination, predictive AI presents the possibility of order in chaotic times. This extends to the commercial sector, as digital applications of occult media such as Tarot associate such platforms with the aura of a good life. The occult offers comfort in the face of extractive precarity.

Today capital’s web is shrinking. The mesh connecting microchip producers at Foxconn’s factories in Shenzhen to Genius Bar employees in Berlin to the tech workers at Apple’s Cupertino offices is growing more uniform. While the position of the low-end and high-end worker vis-à-vis capital is vastly different, they increasingly share a downward trajectoryIn what is a telling sign for the tech sector, computer programmer employment rates in the United States have plummeted to their lowest level since the 1980s. Such pressure has visibly eroded workers’ capacity to negotiate, and not just over wages. In 2018, Google employees were able to halt the company’s collaboration with the US military under Project Maven. Last year, on the other hand, over fifty workers were met with summary dismissal after protesting Google’s complicity in the genocide in Gaza. The aristocracy of the knowledge economy, once able to negotiate its terms, is slowly being dethroned

This is exactly it. Silicon Valley preppers + the delusional architects of AI addled techno fascism aren’t denying climate change, they’re remaking society to save themselves while pushing for speculative energy futures where they fully control the earth’s resources www.thenation.com/article/envi...
Screenshot from the Nation: “Many of the people who are building bugout bunkers for the impending civilizational collapse are the same people allowing, if not bankrolling, the destruction of public institutions and democratic forms of the rule of law. Because when the sea levels rise, when people are displaced by climate injustice, we can either choose the path of justice and solidarity for all or we can choose the path of death and destruction for most, and security for a few, and they are trying their hardest to force society onto the path of the latter”

Instead, the omen portended by the gift of the golden pager is inextricably tied to its physical form and mode of circulation: a piece of good-enough propaganda professing the domination of pager-time over tree-time, deposited in the heart of empire. If you listen closely (to history, at least), the arrival of the wooden object sounds less like the shock of the new and more like a return, a looping back, a boomerang.”

Looking toward the upcoming hurricane season, there’s a clear irony in building more gas-powered plants to support data center megaprojects while anticipating the power outages that inevitably accompany severe weather events. But stories of resistance from the past make clear the need to continue organizing against development that exploits people and the environment for the benefit of a few — while also demanding that the infrastructures we rely on be repaired and made more resilient for climate-related impacts ahead. As more communities are left in the dark, figuratively and literally, there is a need for new infrastructures that can support one another: ongoing efforts to build alternative electricity, communications, and water infrastructures offer ways to reimagine pathways for just community-based development, without the potential empty promise of an AI data center”

Oh my god I kind of need a Mormon transhumanist take on this all
From Wall Street Journal article on Musk’s babies:

“The two men couldn't be more different on the surface: Birchall is a practicing Mormon with a large family who works hard to keep a low profile.

Birchall's formal responsibilities are wide ranging, from disbursing funds for Musk's super PAC to assembling the team that helped Musk take Twitter private. His role as intermediary between Musk and some of the mothers happens in the background”More from WSJ article:

“Musk often has Birchall step in to handle negotiations with the women over arrangements for the pregnancy and financial support after.

The arrangements play out in similar ways for the different women, according to a document and people familiar with the matter.

Birchall was involved in acquiring the property for a compound in Austin where Musk imagined the women and his growing number of babies would all live among multiple residences, according to a person familiar with the matter.
He is involved in other property deals across Musk's different businesses

From @alexis-madrigal.bsky.social’s newsletter about his new book! Can’t wait for The Pacific Circuit
I also believe in the core idea of environmental justice. EJ is a way to reckon with the physical aftereffects of racist practices in this country. Right wing forces can try to hide the history of segregation or redlining or police brutality, but the land in historically Black neighborhoods keeps the score. There is the lead in the soil. There are the toxics buried in the empty lots. These environmental realities haunt these neighborhoods and no amount of intentional forgetting or obfuscation can make the heavy metals and solvents go away.

There’s a lot more to talk about in this book from the Third World Liberation Front to the proposed coal export terminal in West Oakland to the model of longshore unionism to the way that Silicon Valley’s semiconductor companies led the way on outsourcing to Asia. I’ll address some of those things here in the newsletter over time. (A microseason of book content, perhaps

“The ship is going down. The NSF workforce cries ‘to the pumps’. NSF leaders are drilling more holes in the hull. And no, you are NOT doing it to save NSF. You could have saved NSF's soul, but instead you are ruining it”
Today NSF Director called a meeting to tell 10% of our workforce "you are fired" and then he did not even have a decency to show up to deliver the message in person. We have seen similar cruel and incompetent behavior in the past, just to mention the way the recent salary decrease was handled; with cruelty, manipulation and miscommunication.
In those difficult times NSF leadership could shine. After all, NSF is unique across the government through our commitment to truth, reason and objectivity.
Instead, NSF leadership leaves behind a legacy of spineless servitude mixed with gross incompetence.
At the top of NSF we need people who radiate epistemic authority; beacons of faith in the power of research and education to benefit the Nation. People who can stand for principles, object injustice, and if needed take the fall for defending the mission. People who can lead.
What we have instead is blades of grass, bending in the wind, however it blows. People without a shred of empathy, unable even to deliver bad news in a humane, organized and sympathetic way. People who do not discuss anything, are not interested in opinion of the Agency they lead, who hide and make decisions behind closed doors. People who do not show up. People who break the rules, such as the Collective Bargaining Agreement, over, and over, and over again, without a shred of responsibility, respect or liability. People who are so incompetent, they cannot even start their own meeting on time, calculate salaries properly, record proper probation period... the list is endless.
The ship is going down. The NSF workforce cries "to the pumps". NSF leaders are drilling more holes in the hull.
And no, you are NOT doing it to save NSF. You could have saved NSF's soul, but instead you are ruining it.
Shame on you.
Finally, to our friends fired today: we appreciate you and thank you for your service. Words cannot describe how devastating the news of your shameful firing today are to all of us.
