Today I lost an NIH grant training clinicians to do research about intimate partner violence with perinatal women. More women are murdered in the perinatal period than die of obstetric complications. I didn't just lose a grant. We lost an entire cohort of people building careers to prevent that.

A powerful example of the harm this administration has already managed to do, just in the world of medical research: “I have been working on a cure for incurable cancer that is *this close* to getting to patients after >12 years of (quite challenging) work, and the effort is on indefinite hold.”
Post author Challice Bonifant: Hello! For those who I have known in former lives, I am now a pediatric oncologist. I spend my time balanced between treating children w/high risk leukemias (with stem cell transplant) and developing cell therapies in a lab, that I hope will be less toxic, but more powerful treatment to spare the hard parts the hard parts of therapy that are necessary, but are also really rough (and keep kids out of school and away from friends). I have been working in one really promising therapy since 2013 … which is a long time and the continued work means from the first experiment that the data continues to look good, the cells are doing what they’re supposed to, and likely would in patients also. We have published several articles showing this, and have stuck through all the hard and less fun parts to gather together the regulatory package (investigational new drug application) that is needed to ask the FDA for permission to try the therapy in human patients. For those who know, getting this document together is exhaustive, and encompassed months of tedious work, to include safety and validation of many small, but important things. Unfortunately, I learned today that all submission of IND applications by my partners is “on hold” because of overwhelmed groups suffering due to recent layoffs (and ongoing threats of more). And honestly given the current state of the FDA, who would administrate the review anyway? In short, I have been working on a cure for incurable cancer that is *this close* to getting to patients after >12 years of (quite challenging) work, and the effort is on indefinite hold. In other news, my excellent undergrad has been told his planned NIH summer internship program has been cancelledPost continued: (this type of program is what got me into research and with which I would not have the job that I do). Not sure who or what will be around and available when the pipeline of drugs and new ideas (and people tk test them) fires up because this type of work is simply not a priority but I’m feeling fairly dejected about it all today! I did NOT vote for this.

It is shameful that RAINN, representing sexually abused people, erased trans people because they are scared of Trump. To any org censoring themselves: you cannot jettison trans to save yourself. Yes, if you don't, other groups may suffer, and you might too. But we are all in this together.

Where are all the medical societies & associations? Instead of taking a stand too many are sitting on the sidelines “carefully monitoring” events.

When the Nazis first came to power, within a few months, they raided the Institute for Sexuality which did the first studies of trans people. The books they seized were burned here, including a copy of Heinrich Heines poem that said, "where they burn books, they will ultimately burn people too."
A historical black-and-white photograph depicting a Nazi book burning event in Germany during the 1930s. A large crowd of uniformed officers, civilians, and Nazi supporters are seen performing the Nazi salute while books and other materials burn in a fire. The scene is illuminated by the flames, with scattered papers and debris on the ground. The image captures a moment of censorship and oppression during the rise of the Nazi regime.

Graph these by salary and you’ll get the same results. Pediatricians get paid less because our society doesn’t value children, and particularly sick disabled children. And as pediatricians we have accepted a system where we are devalued because we advocate for our patients instead of ourselves.
