According to the sign in the elevator one can have a plant as a “sleepover buddy.” I think the fairies are trying to move the forest indoors…they’re also clearly after the English-speaking tourists.
A sign in an elevator with text on a green blob that says “social sustainability is an integral part of our philosophy” and goes on to say that guests can borrow a plant as a “sleepover buddy” as part of its green options. It is one of the few signs in the elevator in English.

Tiye’s yellow lips. I know that is not even remotely the proper name for this sculpture fragment but I have always loved it and wonder what the full bust must’ve been like.
A fragment of a face of dynasty 18 queen Tiye (ancient Egypt). The most exquisite pair of lips and a soft, beautiful bottom half of a woman’s face are carved in a light yellow stone polished so smooth it looks alive. Now at the metropolitan museum of art, NYC.

And how it looked in January:
An early 20th century gas station, turned into a Route 66 Museum. It is a small limestone/plastered to look like stone building painted yellow with the words CUCAMONGA SERVICE STATION painted in blue above the archway. Two yellow gas pumps from the same early time period are beneath the arch. To the left a white and red ‘57 Chevy or similar vintage vehicle is parked. Other buildings, clouds, and the mountains a few miles north are in the background. Route 66 is visible in the foreground, from which the photograph was taken.

Back at Birmingham airport waiting for flights home. #ISS26 was an extraordinary meeting. They’re always great, but this year in this place (Tuscaloosa), right now, was particularly timely. Grateful to the UA hosts and our ISS directors for such a rewarding experience. Here’s a photo from our venue:
A plaque at Presidents Hall, University of Alabama, explaining its name. The building was originally named for a past president who was a confederate, an enslaver, and a person unworthy of honor. One wonders how long this plaque gets to stay with Alabama’s new anti-DEI laws already targeting the department whose name was changed and whose instructors may no longer speak about the history of slavery and its legacy on campus

Oh my. Qualtrics found the AI elephant in the room and it has three trunks. Not on my bingo card to be the first corporate email I’d get admitting what is happening 😳
Excerpt from a Qualtrics email:
…” with companies under pressure to show AI returns, our research reveals four critical trends that separate success from failure:
- AI customer service disappoints while other AI succeeds
- survey fatigue leaves businesses guessing about customer churn
- value won’t be enough to secure loyalty in 2026
- consumers demand transparency over personalization tactics

CX leaders, the numbers don’t lie: customers crave authentic connection more than ever as AI disappoints. This isn’t just a trend, it’s your opportunity to lead. Join thousands of CX professionals who are putting human connection back at the heart of customer experience.”

This week I am introducing a kitten to my five year old cat who was far more lonely than I think either of us realized until the little guy arrived. Good lessons in why we need friends.
A Siamese kitten and an adult Siberian cat with very similar coloration are playing with a large paper bag on top of a white down comforter spread across a bed. ...did we just get the student loan extortion letter? It sure reads a whole lot like the fork in the road emails: "Nice forbearance plan you have there, we can't cancel it because of courts, but won't you drop it and start over in favor of these other plans we have no intention of supporting?" 🤪🤡
Part of an email about my student loan, formatted as if it's offering helpful alternatives but none of them are guaranteed or will be as helpful as the one I'm already on.

Green triangle with ! icon: "Avoid Growing Your Debt": Now that interest will start accruing on Aug. 1, staying in the SAVE forbearance will increase the total amount of federal student loan debt you owe. Having interest accrue while you're not making payments will cost you more in the long run."
Clock icon in green: "Pay Off Debt Faster: If you switch to a different plan now and start making payments, you'll pay off your debt more quickly than if you stayed on the SAVE plan in an interest-bearing forbearance."
A pie chart with broken out pieces in green: "Plan for the Future: By enrolling in a different plan now, you'll learn your new monthly payment amount and can better plan for how your student loans fit into your budget."
Icon in green of a building with a clock above the door: "Public Service Loan Forgiveness: Time spent in the SAVE forbearance *does not* provide credit toward Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF). If you're pursuing PSLF, you'll reach your required 120 qualifying monthly payments faster by starting payments on a different plan."
Green icon of a hand with a dollar sign above it: "IBR Loan Forgiveness: If you switch to the Income-Based Repayment (IBR) Plan, you'll be eligible to have any remaining balance on your loans discharged after 20 or 25 years, depending on when you took out your loans.
