The first time I learned that some runners shit themselves during the race, I was disgusted and continue to be disgusted but they started making that seem like part of being an extreme athlete. Still unacceptable.

I've been having a hate-hate relationship with my body. Things that didn't make me sick in the past make me sick now. My tolerance for standing, sitting, moving, staying still, whatever is in constant flux and the consequences for getting it wrong are steep.

Even knowing this, I was still shocked when it happened to me. I'm still working through it but I've spent the last day actively trying not to disconnect from reality. I literally felt everything start to fade out a couple of times because it feels too hard. Now I'm just sad.

To this day, I can't believe I'd convinced myself that he was going to be okay. I'm thinking about this because that same disconnect happened yesterday with my mom. My sister had said that Mom was confused more often & sometimes didn't know who she was so I knew it would happen to me eventually.

The hospice nurse came by and said, "He's actively dying, now." Actively dying. What a fucking phrase. I lost my shit, broke some pottery, cried, and then pulled myself together enough to tell him that I loved him and that it was ok to let go. It hurt so fucking much. It still does.

That blip had me convinced that we'd jumped the gun - something I was completely fine with. I hung out with him and convinced myself that we had more time. Then he slipped out of consciousness again. I was convinced he was sleeping...until his breathing started sounding like a rattle.

The day my dad passed, I didn't believe it was happening. My mom had called me home the previous day because he'd lost consciousness and they believed it was the end. So I flew home and sat with him. He regained consciousness and seemed fine. He ate, had some ice cream, and basically seemed fine.

And those moments when she realized she has forgotten most of her life are fucking heartbreaking every time. Sometimes she doesn't know who we are. Sometimes she goes non responsive. Sometimes she panics and thinks she's late for work - she hasn't had a job in 20 years.
