Another story where a single captain Rui Rodrigues, with a very small group of men, secured the airport on his own, by saying that the regime troops had to surrender to him as the regime had fallen (this was not true, not yet at least) and reinforcements were on the way.

Salgueiro Maia's nerves of steel, who stood in front of the regime forces, a tank directly pointed at him, and survived the order given twice to shoot him, which the soldiers at the other side refused to obey. A true act of courage that might have represented one of the major blows on the regime.

Those guys were truly evil, often sadistic bastards with a free license to do the worst of things to other men, and I suspect they would not go down without a fight, fearing the repercussions of years of torture and selective killings they led. There are endless small stories within the big story.

This was an amazing event were a group of low rank officials decided to change the course of history. There were barely any casualties, and those that happened, 6 if I recall correctly, were the consequence of a stand off gone wrong with the political police.

A cool example of using a model for (multi) species abundances to reconstruct an image (unrelated to species abundances!), by treating the RGB channels as 3 different species. It's remarkable how you can get a good idea about the overall picture just from RGB values on a very small sample of pixels.

Today was the last day of Ecological Modelling classes, I "offered" the students a full day workshop where I would work with them and their final assignment models. Yesterday we had a little get together to celebrate end of term. What a great class. #WorkHardPartyHarder

Near-0 probability event: level unlocked. Today I was the external examiner of an MSc dissertation. Drove to a different uni. A car hit me from behind (really far from the uni!). A few chaotic minutes later... the MSc's student boyfriend was the co-pilot, his cousin the driver. What are the odds??

Talking about GAMMs, does anyone happen to know what are the variables decription in the dataset TurnstoneDataV2.txt, from Chapter4 in Zuur's et al. book on GAMMs. Wanted to give it to students as an example dataset to play with, but can't figure out what some variables are (and don't have the book)

I participated invited to represent the Portuguese Statistical Society, but I brought all my many hats, besides SPE we had University of St Andrews/CREEM, CEAUL and DBA/FCUL on display. It is great to be able to work at different places and interface between different topics, ecology and statistics.

this time I was accompanied by my MSc student Matilde Correia, who was a student at this high school a few years back. It was really nice to see the students experience one of "them" now talking to them as a "scientist". You could see the "maybe I can do it too" spark in some of their eyes...
