friend sent me this and I can't stop laughing
Drawing on oral history interviews, observations, interactions, media, and archival records, it focuses
especially on the word “tranny.” That term is now considered one of the most offensive words
someone can call a trans person. In the 1990s, though, the word was a marker of pride, and one
which some older trans people continue to use.

THE RISE AND FALL OF "TRANNY" IN AUSTRALIA by Noah Riseman

Noah Riseman is a cisgender, white, gay man and professor of history who takes as his mantra "nothing about us, without us". When he started work on the book in 2017, he establish a transgender project advisory group. He wanted the group to be a "sounding board for ideas" and also to hold him accountable.

It also can't understated: many in the WNBA didn't fall for this bullshit and made statements supportive of trans women. The result is this particular flashpoint petering out like a wet fart.
Now, while GUDEA introduced raw data to the conversation, the writing has been on the sports media wall all along. Katie Nolan called out the hypocrisy and manipulation, while several prominent voices saw right through Kanter’s stunt. Even Jesse Watters aired out Fox News for pretending to care about the WNBA.

The best barometer is simple. As the WNBA season draws to a close — the Atlanta Dream and Golden State Valkyries are in the WNBA Finals — watch all those so-called WNBA fans, claiming visceral concern for women and the league, suddenly stop caring about the WNBA and transgender athletes. How can they cosplay without their culture war arena du jour?

Musk's acquisition of Twitter was entirely about appropriating the discursive commons to influence, manipulate and degrade conversations about marginalized demographics. He is explicitly responsible for funding and bolstering far-right narratives, as much as Zuckerberg and figures like Bannon.
Those were real-life consequences. And regardless of Cunningham’s intentions when expressing her opinion about transgender athletes, she opened the door for entities with ulterior motives to take her comments and run — both to cash in personally and to push a harmful agenda to further divide the country.

According to an exclusive report from CT Jones of Rolling Stone, citing the data analytics company GUDEA and its founder, Keith Presley, “there were only a handful of tweets that ever got more than 3,000 retweets” related to the transgender athlete debate engulfing the WNBA.

“If you take out the eight top posts, this [narrative] didn’t happen. Nobody would be talking about this,” Presley said.

GUDEA analyzed 188,631 relevant posts from July 20 to Aug. 12, per Rolling Stone, with nearly 99% of posts living on X and 3.57% falling in the “non-typical” bucket of influencers, pundits, and aggregation accounts.

“Georgia Paul, GUDEA’s head of customer success, tells Rolling Stone that the online conversation’s domination by ‘non-typical’ accounts is important because these individuals have the highest incentive to drive up engagement,” Jones wrote. “Since Elon Musk’s purchase of the platform in 2022, the founder has publicly stated that his goal is to make the app’s algorithm — and people’s feeds — free of political bias and more equitable for conservative posters. Not only can people who pay for premium X subscriptions now make money off of their most popular tweets, but they’re prioritized in comment sections, driving their tweets to the top.”

One of the reasons for this is that the rhetorical figure of the trans child is never transfeminine. The trans girl is not a figure in the conservative lexicon because the transfeminine is a grotesquerie positioned always as a sexual threat to "real girls", and thus always adultified.
It is the latest development in a story ignited by a comment made by Indiana Fever player Sophie Cunningham, who said she wanted to protect young girls "who shouldn't have to go against biological men" in sport.

gosh what if I started screaming
We name the process initiated by competing
marginalities as the race to innocence. Women challenged about their
domination respond by calling attention to their own subordination. The
impasse that results depends on the idea that if a woman is subordinate herself,
she cannot then be implicated in the subordination of others. The race to
innocence confines us to an additive model for understanding oppression,

"Writing a paper together calling yourselves out of line to try and repair the friendship after arguing at a conference" is cracking me up btw
At a conference on law and feminism, when a woman who is a survivor of
prostitution challenged participants to take the violence in prostitution
seriously, and not to deny it by calling prostitution "an expression of our sexual
autonomy," or ajob like any other, some participants insisted that some women
viewed their involvement in prostitution not as violence but as a job. She felt
the need to leave the conference because she believed that once again feminists
had erased the violence in prostitution. The next day, during a discussion about
race discrimination and racial subordination in feminist publishing, Sherene
considered how to ensure that each of us is challenged at the sites of our
dominance. At that moment Mary Lou noted that we had all failed to challenge
ourselves the day before when many of us had resisted the idea of prostitution
as violence. Her statement tumed the discussion away from race and feminist
publishing toward how people in the audience and panel participants felt about
what had happened the previous day. Neither prostitution nor racism was ever
discussed, and a fracture developed between us as co-organizers of the event.
The conflict between us emerged because Sherene viewed Mary Lou's
statement as putting an end to an important discussion on racism led primarily
by women of color. She considered Mary Lou's intervention to have come
either from a desire to shut down a discussion about racism, or from a
perception that challenging racism was not as important a political goal as the
goal of acknowledging and ending the violence of prostitution. Mary Lou
remained frustrated that few women present, including Sherene, seemed able
to acknowledge the violence of prostitution or to see that their resistance came
out of their positions of privilege as women who had something to gain from
denying the violence of prostitution. Our first response to the conflict, which
felt like competing marginalities, was to call it a breakdown in communication.

The Race to Innocence: Confronting
Hierarchical Relations among Women
Mary Louise Fellows* and Sherene Razack**
INTRODUCTION
We came to write this Article after reflecting on the many times that
feminist political solidarity has failed because of what we identify below as the
problem of "competing marginalities." These moments of conflict and political
immobility seem to center around the deeply felt belief that each of us, as
women, is not implicated in the subordination of other women. When we view
ourselves as innocent, we cannot confront the hierarchies that operate among
us. Instead, each woman claims that her own marginality is the worst one;
failing to interrogate her complicity in other women's lives, she continues to
participate in the practices that oppress other women. We have named the
process through which a woman comes to believe that her own claim of
subordination is the most urgent and that she is unimplicated in the
subordination of other women as the "race to innocence."

I genuinely don't understand why this is being framed as though the law is specifically about cracking down on asexuals. It's an anti-LGBT crackdown and it's being discussed as such outside of Western contexts. It's weird to reframe the law in this clickbait-y way.
In criminalising private, consensual same-sex intimacy and using the coercive power of the state to repress other basic freedoms, Niger’s military regime has shown a blatant disregard for fundamental human rights law. Niger now joins 65 other countries that use these laws to expose a vulnerable group of their own citizens to fear, violence, and state-sanctioned hatred.
-- Téa Braun, Chief Executive of the Human Dignity Trust

This legal development, which is believed to have taken place in February 2026, was not picked up by news outlets until recently. A ‘large-scale crackdown’ against LGBT+ people has reportedly already started in Niger.

This brings the total number of countries that criminalise consensual same-sex acts to 66. Thirty-three of these are in Africa.

I don't want to be a cunt but the way this is being reporting is kind of... gross? Clicking the link leads to a report about homosexuality being criminalized for the first time in Niger's history. Asexuality is only mentioned insofar as the acronym "LGBTQIA+" is used a few times.
In June 2026, the nation of Niger became the first nation in the world to criminalise asexuality, as part of a wider crackdown on the LGBTQIA+ community. The country, currently run by a military junta, broadened its anti-LGBTQIA+ laws, increasing the criminalisation of LGBTQIA+ ‘practices’ to include anyone who ‘attempts to’ participate.Niger criminalises same-sex intimacy for the first time in its history

Neighbouring francophone countries under military rule, Burkina Faso and Mali, also recently criminalised homosexuality

The West African nation of Niger has enacted a law criminalising consensual same-sex intimacy for the first time in its history.

The new Penal Code of Niger is understood to introduce a provision criminalising ‘indecent or unnatural acts’ and ‘sexual relations with a person of the same sex’, though the Code is not yet publicly available. It is also understood to contain other wide-ranging provisions such as criminalising ‘LGBTQIA+ practices’ and involvement in organisations ‘for homosexuals or LGBTQIA+’. Imprisonment terms are up to 20 years and are accompanied by heavy fines.

Following along @mzakharuk.bsky.social's reread of @juliaserano.bsky.social's "Whipping Girl". Barely any cis people understand the rampant rape culture inherent to the medical gatekeeping of trans healthcare. These "professionals" know the power they hold over trans people and often abuse it.
> In the 1970s, Suzanne J. Kessler and Wendy McKenna came across several instances in which gatekeepers were rather blatant about this practice: “A clinician during a panel session on transsexualism at the 1974 meeting of the American Psychological Association said that he was more convinced of the femaleness of a male-to-female transsexual if she was particularly beautiful and was capable of evoking in him those feelings that beautiful women generally do. Another clinician told us that he uses his own sexual interest as a criterion for deciding whether a transsexual is really the gender she/he claims.”

"I was not then and am not now aware of any evidence that Jeffrey Epstein was a 'pedophile' in the technical sense; his sexual preference appears to have been for young women aged 16-22, which would at most reflect partial ephebophilia," Hubbard told Chron in an emailed statement. "Although most of the women who were involved with him at that age retrospectively regret it, I am unaware of any evidence that the contacts were non-consensual at the time."

"Some were self-conscious sex workers who recruited others into his orbit and are now making cynical claims of victimization to cash in on his estate and business partners, as reported by Michael Tracey and other credible journalists," Hubbard added. "Like over 1,000,000 Americans, he did have a conviction for a sex-related offense, but from what I could see in 2015, it was for something that would not even have been illegal in most European countries and resulted in a very short sentence."

THE LABUBU HOWLS ETERNAL
“Yet strangely, most chroniclers of the New Right’s errand into the capital—supporters and opponents alike—characterized feminism as a “fringe” issue. Press accounts, even those emanating from liberal and leftist journals, generally presented the right-wing movement’s opposition to abortion and the ERA as distracting sidelights to the meatier, more “important” policy aims—decreasing government regulation, cutting the budget, bolstering defense. The first round of history books on the movement were no better. Richard G. Hutcheson, Jr.’s God in the White House, a typical account, allotted only two pages to the ERA and explored every possible cause for the right wing’s mobilization except feminism, from Watergate to the “new narcissism.” “[T]he ‘hearth and home’ issues” on the New Right agenda, Alan Crawford concluded in Thunder on the Right, were merely “nonpolitical, fringe issues at best.””

gosh what a mystery. why do men feel this way
Nothing seems to crush the masculine petals more than a bit
of feminist rain—a few drops are perceived as a downpour. “Men
view even small losses of deference, advantages, or opportunities as
large threats,” wrote William Goode, one of many sociologists to
puzzle over the peculiarly hyperbolic male reaction to minuscule
improvements in women’s rights.
“Women have become so powerful that our independence has
been lost in our own homes and is now being trampled and stamped
underfoot in public.” So Cato wailed in 195 B.C., after a few Roman
women sought to repeal a law that forbade their sex from riding in
chariots and wearing multicolored dresses. In the 16th century, just
the possibility that two royal women might occupy thrones in
Europe at the same time provoked John Knox to issue his famous
diatribe, “The First Blast of the Trumpet Against the Monstrous
Regiment of Women.”

I think the "Backlash" episode may actually be that "Talia screams for two hours straight" episode people have been asking for
When author Anthony Astrachan completed his seven-year study
of American male attitudes in the 1980s, he found that no more
than 5 to 10 percent of the men he surveyed “genuinely support
women’s demands for independence and equality.” In 1988, the
American Male Opinion Index, a poll of three thousand men
conducted for Gentlemen’s Quarterly, found that less than one fourth
of men supported the women’s movement, while the majority
favored traditional roles for women. Sixty percent said wives with
small children should stay home. Other studies examining male
attitudes toward the women’s movement—of which, regrettably,
there are few—suggest that the most substantial share of the
growth in men’s support for feminism may have occurred in the
rst half of the ’70s, in that brief period when women’s “lib” was
fashionable, and slowed since. As the American Male Opinion Index
observed, while men in the ’80s continued to give lip service to such
abstract matters of “fair play” as the right to equal pay, “when the
issues change from social justice to personal applications, the
consensus crumbles.” By the ’80s, as the poll results made evident,
men were interpreting small advances in women’s rights as big, and
complete, ones; they believed women had made major progress
toward equality—while women believed the struggle was just
beginning. This his-and-hers experience of the equal-rights campaign
would soon generate a gulf between the sexes.Dr. Manhattan screaming

This stirring proclamation, o ered in the nal page of Friedan’s
classic work, is one prediction that never came to pass. Feminists
have always optimistically gured that once they demonstrated the
merits of their cause, male hostility to women’s rights would
evaporate. They have always been disappointed. “I am sure the

fucking HELL
The loss of a collective spirit has proven far more debilitating to
American women than what is commonly characterized as the
overly taxing experience of a liberated life. Backlash-era
conventional wisdom blames the women’s movement for American
women’s “exhaustion.” The feminists have pushed forward too fast,
backlash pundits say; they have brought too much change too soon
and have worn women out. But the malaise and enervation that
women are feeling today aren’t induced by the speed of liberation
but by its stagnation. The feminist revolution has petered out,
leaving so many women discouraged and paralyzed by the
knowledge that, once again, the possibility for real progress has
been foreclosed.
When one is feeling stranded, nding a safe harbor inevitably
becomes a more compelling course than bucking social currents.
Keeping the peace with the particular man in one’s life becomes
more essential than battling the mass male culture. Saying one is
“not a feminist” (even while supporting quietly every item of the
feminist platform) seems the most prudent, self-protective strategy.
Ultimately in such conditions, the impulse to remedy social injustice
can become not only secondary but silent.

As the backlash has gained power, instead of ghting and
exposing its force, many women’s groups and individual women
have become caught up with tting into its fabricated backdrop.
Feminist-minded institutions founded a decade earlier, from The
First Women’s Bank to Options for Women, camou aged their
intent with new, neutral-sounding names; women in politics have
claimed they are now only interested in “family issues,” not
women’s rights; and career women with Ivy League degrees have
eschewed the feminist label for public consumption. Instead of
assailing injustice, many women have learned to adjust to it. Instead
of getting angry, they have become depressed. Instead of uniting
their prodigious numbers, they have splintered and turned their
pain and frustration inward, some in starkly physical ways.

Also "Great Replacement"-style conspiracies entwined with backlash to women's rights are just so core to nation-building, hegemonic demographic anxieties and right-wing political projects that we ought to have a much better understanding of the phenomenon.
Then as now, late-Victorian religious and political leaders accused
women who postponed childbearing of triggering a “race suicide”

Whenever this spiral has swung closer to equality, women have
believed their journey to be drawing to a close. “At the opening of
the twentieth century,” su ragist Ida Husted Harper rejoiced, the
female condition was “completely transformed in most respects.”
Soon the country would have to open a Woman’s Museum, feminist
Elsie Clews Parsons mused in 1913, just to prove “to a doubting
posterity that once women were a distinct social class.” Still later, at
the close of World War II, a female steelworker declared in a
government survey, “The old theory that a woman’s place is in the

social survival tactic, that they aren’t so interested in advancement
after all. Some of them parade their defection from the women’s
movement, while their working-class peers founder and cling to the
splintered remains of the feminist cause. While a very few a uent
and celebrity women who are showcased in news articles boast
about having “found my niche as Mrs. Andy Mill” and going home
to “bake bread,” the many working-class women appeal for their
economic rights—ocking to unions in record numbers, striking on
their own for pay equity and establishing their own edgling groups
for working women’s rights. In 1986, while 41 percent of upper
income women were claiming in the Gallup poll that they were not
feminists, only 26 percent of low-income women were making the
same claim.

The backlash is at once sophisticated and banal, deceptively
“progressive” and proudly backward. It deploys both the “new”
ndings of “scienti c research” and the dime-store moralism of
yesteryear; it turns into media sound bites both the glib
pronouncements of pop-psych trend-watchers and the frenzied
rhetoric of New Right preachers. The backlash has succeeded in
framing virtually the whole issue of women’s rights in its own
language. Just as Reaganism shifted political discourse far to the
right and demonized liberalism, so the backlash convinced the
public that women’s “liberation” was the true contemporary
American scourge—the source of an endless laundry list of personal,
social, and economic problems.
But what has made women unhappy in the last decade is not their
“equality”—which they don’t yet have—but the rising pressure to
halt, and even reverse, women’s quest for that equality. The “man
shortage” and the “infertility epidemic” are not the price of
liberation; in fact, they do not even exist. But these chimeras are the
chisels of a society-wide backlash. They are part of a relentless
whittling-down process—much of it amounting to outright
propaganda—that has served to stir women’s private anxieties and
break their political wills. Identifying feminism as women’s enemy
only furthers the ends of a backlash against women’s equality,
simultaneously de ecting attention from the backlash’s central role
and recruiting women to attack their own cause. It is 2026. Talia Bhatt has posted an image of Dr. Manhattan on Mars to highlight repetitive, cyclical historical developments.

This was written like 35 years ago btw
Seen against this background, the much ballyhooed claim that
feminism is responsible for making women miserable becomes
absurd—and irrelevant. As we shall see in the chapters to follow,
the a ictions ascribed to feminism are all myths. From “the man
shortage” to “the infertility epidemic” to “female burnout” to “toxic
day care,” these so-called female crises have had their origins not in
the actual conditions of women’s lives but rather in a closed system
that starts and ends in the media, popular culture, and advertising—
an endless feedback loop that perpetuates and exaggerates its own
false images of womanhood

Oh no! Not their gender identity!
Finally, some “liberated” women themselves have joined the
lamentations. In confessional accounts, works that invariably
receive a hearty greeting from the publishing industry, “recovering
Superwomen” tell all. In The Cost of Loving: Women and the New Fear
of Intimacy, Megan Marshall, a Harvard-pedigreed writer, asserts
that the feminist “Myth of Independence” has turned her generation
into unloved and unhappy fast-trackers, “dehumanized” by careers
and “uncertain of their gender identity.” Other diaries of mad
Superwomen charge that “the hard-core feminist viewpoint,” as one
of them puts it, has relegated educated executive achievers to
solitary nights of frozen dinners and closet drinking.

Oh no, anything but autonomy and financial independence
Popular psychology manuals peddle the same diagnosis for
contemporary female distress. “Feminism, having promised her a
stronger sense of her own identity, has given her little more than an
identity crisis,” the best-selling advice manual Being a Woman
asserts. The authors of the era’s self-help classic Smart
Women/Foolish Choices proclaim that women’s distress was “an
unfortunate consequence of feminism,” be cause “it created a myth
among women that the apex of self-realization could be achieved
only through autonomy, independence, and career.”

Reading a book that's actually enjoyable for once, for "Cracked Ivory", but it isn't without its groan-worthy excerpts. (This is from the first chapter of the 15th anniversary edition of Susan Faludi's "Backlash", "Blame it on Feminism".)
“In dispensing its spoils, women’s liberation has given my
generation high incomes, our own cigarette, the option of single
parenthood, rape crisis centers, personal lines of credit, free love,
and female gynecologists,” Mona Charen, a young law student,
writes in the National Review, in an article titled “The Feminist
Mistake.” “In return it has e ectively robbed us of one thing upon
which the happiness of most women rests—men.”

"HORMONES ARE EXPERIMENTAL! WE NEED MORE TESTING! MY NAN DEVELOPED A COUGH AND HER DOCTOR FORCE-FED HER ESTROGEL!" Welcome to trans womanhood I guess
A lofty goal, but one that Midi and its competitors’ track records suggest is possible. In a few short years, hormone therapy for perimenopausal women swung from inaccessible to inescapable. Every day, as the number of women taking hormones rises, they join an ongoing treatment group that is more experimental than perhaps they know. When it comes to doling out estrogen and progesterone, the goal for clinicians is balance. The industry employing them, however, is zeroed in on its growth chart going up, and up, and up.
