Goodnight. 🖼️ Arnold Lobel

Illustration of Owl, a character from Arnold Lobel's "Owl at Home" book.
Owl is a large owl wearing striped pyjamas.
He stands at the bottom of a wooden staircase, holding onto the banister with one hand and a book in the other.
To the left, a tall bookshelf filled with numerous books is visible. Behind the staircase, a window shows the dark blue of the night sky.

I ♥️ this: ‘Ernest Was Ready For His Walk,’ by Alison Friend

A handsome dog in a cap sits on a large wing-back chair, holding his leash and looking at us side-eye, while waiting for his walk; he sits very patiently and on the back wall is a portrait of a cat in a cardigan.

Dog-themed Obi (Japanese traditional kimono sash), about 1930s, Japan

A vertical studio photograph showcases a delightful, whimsically designed section of a traditional Japanese obi (kimono sash).. This textile work highlights an endearing theme centered on the Japanese Chin (chin), a toy dog breed historically pampered by Japanese royalty and aristocracy as symbols of wealth and companionship. The composition is set against a luxurious, pale cream silk ground that features a subtle, woven diamond-diaper or jacquard texture, allowing the bold graphic qualities of the central illustrations to take center stage. Floating in opposite corners of the frame are two golden-yellow spherical brass bells (suzu), which traditionally served as protective or festive charms for cherished household pets.

The focal point of the textile design is the stacked arrangement of two stylized dogs, rendered with the large, expressive, soulful eyes characteristic of the breed. The upper dog features long, flowing black-and-white fur and a gilded nose, framed dramatically by a massive, ruffled neck collar in vibrant red dotted with a dense constellation of tiny yellow stars. Peeking out just below is a second, predominantly white Chin with black-tipped ears, its head tilted upward with an alert, wide-eyed gaze. This lower pup is ensconced in a contrasting indigo-blue checkered ruff finished with a decorative yellow-dotted trim.
