There’s a few ways in which this Fullmetal Alchemist translation (and the dub, for non-Ed / Tucker / whoever else reasons) is dated, but Ed repeating m- is one of them. I still like the comedic relief Ed provides being mad at any short related word, but this is just a very funny sight gag

Through it all is Al’s existential crisis that reminds us that, even though Winry says all they have is each other, Winry is literally there helping them from the side. And she’ll always be there for them.

Al: “Memories are nothing but data, when you really think about it. It should be possible to artificially construct them.”

Ed: “What are you saying, Al…?”

Al: “You told me once that there was something that you were afraid to tell me. Maybe what you wanted to tell me was that my soul and my memories are all fake and that they were created artificially.”

Al: “Eeeeeep! W-Winry…”

Winry: “Al, you’re such an idiot!! You don’t have any idea how Ed feels, do you?! The thing that Ed was too afraid to talk to you about…was whether you blame him for what happened!!”

Ed, post op, a cool rag over his eyes, flashback: “…It’s my fault that Al got stuck with that body… He can’t eat, he can’t sleep… He can’t even feel pain. He probably blames me for what happened!”

Winry: “You know he doesn’t!”

Pinako: “Al isn’t the type of guy to blame you for that. Why don’t you just ask him?”

Ed: “I’m too scared to ask him. That’s why I have to get him back to normal as soon as possible.”

Legitimately, he grounds the whole story back to Winry (who was introduced as a family friend, neighbor, and - most importantly - automail mechanic) and Risembool (the place they don’t wanna go back to) for the boys. It’s a reminder to them, and a message to us, that it isn’t just the Elrics alone.

Hughes: “IT'S NOT THAT THEY DIDNT WANT TO TELL YOU SO MUCH AS THEY DIDN'T THINK THAT THERE WAS A NEED TO TELL YOU. One thing that’s re-striking me is how philosophical it can be. How much is the agnostic Elrics against people of God (Cornello, Rose, Scar). And how much the Elric brothers basically say you can accomplish anything on your own with enough willpower.

Rose: “What do I do? What am I supposed to believe in now!? Are you going to tell me? Well, are you?”

Ed: “You need to figure that out on your own.”

It’s literally not until someone willing to break the social order and norm of things (and Sato has been a character that has been labeled as “weird” or “off putting” or “not friendly” because of this by Hinako’s friends) that Hinako even realizes that there’s multiple paths to being happy.

Hinako: “Th…The truth is…I’m the one…who’s always alone.”

Sato: “What do you mean?”

Hinako: The more I watch other people…and try to match their expressions…the more I’m disgusted with myself…for being so different. I’m so afraid to be myself. I don’t know what to do anymore. It hurts so much…but I can’t talk to- Erm…I’m sorry. Let’s talk about something else…”

Sato: “Uno-San.”

Hinako, to herself: I’ve been running away all along. I learned about makeup and fashion to get a boyfriend. I thought if people saw me as a “nice young lady”…if I could fall in love…and if someone fell in love with me…then maybe I could love myself. I based everything…on what I thought other people wanted.

To basically restate my thesis from the podcast, it really captures this societal pressure (for Hinako, from her mom and her coworkers, that’s been internalized to also be from herself) to find a man, marry, have kids, and live the idealistic happy life.

Hinako sits with her head on her knees in the middle of the street.

“Someone help me.”

Hinako, thinking: It takes time to apply foundation…to make my son look naturally beautiful. And to make my cheeks soft, coral pink, and healthy. I only use subtle shades of lipstick. My clothes are cute and smart and casual. And last of all…my smile. This is my armor. It protects me.

“Okay. Here we go!”

Hinako, to herself: “You’re defective. You can’t fall in love. There’s something wrong with you. You’ll never be normal.”

Her date comes back and replaces the her talking to herself.
Hinako, to her date: “…I’m sorry.”

Hinako, sitting against the fridge in her messy apartment, dishes stacked up in the sink, to herself: I’m…so alone.
