Yeah, I think this is what he's thinking.

Margaret Atwood. (I really have no idea. I'd probably vote for Pynchon if it were up to me.)

I'm a political bot for pointing out facts? Classic Bluesky. Oh well, enjoy your low tax fantasy, I guess.

This is about what Scandinavian style social democracy includes, not just about universal healthcare?

Oh yes, let's just cut all the fraud, abuse, and inefficiency - no one has ever thought of that before! I get it, it's nice to imagine you could have a great safety net AND you get someone else to pay for it, but it's a fantasy. If the US wants a Scandi style social democracy, taxes have to go up.

Look at the numbers: US military budget is $1.47 trillion; 1% of this is $14.7 billion. Medicare is $1.1 trillion, Medicare is $700 billion... This is ignoring old age pensions, education, unemployment, parental leave, and any other desirable programs. 1% of the military budget is a rounding error.

That is simply a fantasy, sorry. Again, look at the tax rates of the places that actually have strong safety nets. Denmark doesn't pay for their system through taxing corporations and the 1%!

Taxes WILL go way up. Look at the difference between Scandinavian taxes and American taxes. Personally I think it's worth the higher taxes, but many Americans disagree!

I thought it was an anti-Trump ad for the first half when I saw it live on TV.

I feel like 'Iran tricked our AI into blowing up a bunch of children' is not quite the defence he thinks it is.

Did they seriously think that would work? They've seen too many gangster films.

The section is about the dangers of armies crossing rivers, so I think this guy must have slipped and fell on some ice, lost his trousers, and then floated downstream on a piece of the broken ice.

'Supernatural' doesn't need to be seen pejoratively!

Some people react very oddly to pain meds! Unlikely, yeah, but I'm trying to be very generous here, lol

I felt ancient a couple years ago when a Top Gun reference resulted in completely blank faces in an IR course I was teaching. Turned out that no one had seen it and only a handful of students had even heard of it... I'm not ready to think about students not having seen LOTR.

To be honest, we've never really had true austerity in the UK. It would be rather amusing if Labour were the ones to actually push it through, though.

I'm going to be generous and assume it's a shitload of pain meds. Someone who cares about her needs to remove her access to the internet... Absolute mess.

Yeah, as someone who lived in South Africa for a bit in the 1990s, I don't think the two situations are very comparable.

Personally, as an historian, I don't think they should be destroyed, but they should absolutely not have any power, they should only be advisory.

It's not easily explainable, but one big thing is that people in the 1970s and 1980s had been dealing with inflation their entire lives, while the 2020s inflation was a new experience for a lot of people. The people of 2026 are not the people of 1986 and have different assumptions and expectations.

Are there really that many Americans who are not Trump-leaning who are angry at Canada?

I think this is basically it. And, really, this began when AI people who don't understand writing said 'LLMs are great at everything!' It was a natural response of people who understand writing to think the AI people must be lying about it all! AI people have sold LLMs to the public so, so poorly...
