Had a fun few days bringing dead and sick locomotives back to life. We have a LMS Patriot (ill for 20+ years) a King Arthur class (eBay) a Midland Compound (eBay) and a LNER J50 (eBay). Lot of fun working on these. #modelrailway #OO #Modeltrains #modeltrain #railway.

Is a railbike real? Looks like you'd be in for some monstrously heavy peddling.

Wealthy people had their own coaches they'd have hooked up to the train, and that lasted quite a while didn't it?

That's true. I wonder if there's a canonical reference for all the times he died and came back: Died: Replicartered. Reborn: Oma and the Diner of Death and Life. Nearly Died: My Sha're Ow More... 😁

If you've never heard of the "skunk trains", they said they combination of gasoline engine and potbelly oil stove meant you could smell them coming long before you could see them. Seems like they still have at least one of them running! www.skunktrain.com/about/

I was surprised when I started reading the history of railroads and realized a lot of early passenger cars were just like this. Well, you'd be darn lucky if they were this nice and had what looks like a decent suspension.

Outstanding! So do they respect the yellow dividers that much or paint over them in real life?

ALCos At The Crossing
On Sunday, September 27, 2026, SP 2400 was with 2409 leading a local freight leaving "Pleasanton" after being passed by an ACE train. This is at the Tri-City Society of Model Engineers (TCSME) model railroad club in the historic Niles depot in Fremont, CA.
My models are both English (Bowser) ALCo C-415s.
The real SP 2400 was an ALCo C-415, SP Class AS415-1. Reportedly: it was built in 1966 builder's number 3458-1. Sold in 1977 to Fundidora Monterrey a steel mill in Monterrey, Mexico with some other C-415s.

I love these things that look like they were put together over a weekend and beer was involved.

I think you're right and I was reading a comma there where there wasn't one: "The AEC railmotor was the first generally successful railmotor, built for the Victorian Railways." is how I read it.

That's really close. It would be matching except for the roof could be silver above green.

So no problem running them as a pair, no issue with one locomotive pushing the other too hard like often happens?

Tachyon Eddy @tachyoneddies.com · 30/09/2026
What a gorgeous set! What locomotive will you pull it with?
120
Tachyon Eddy @tachyoneddies.com · 30/09/2026
So are 2400 and 2409 a pair of speed matched locomotives of yours, or belong to different people and have to work together at meets?

Some trains are easy to model because they're built from giant lego bricks to begin with.

Tachyon Eddy @tachyoneddies.com · 29/09/2026
That stepped hood is bothering me, but let's face it this is very good and gets a shout out for having the train phone. Are these kits people are making or is it all custom made and even the decals?
010
Tachyon Eddy @tachyoneddies.com · 29/09/2026
Phew... found an actual model train in the model trains feed. I know Legos are models too but the awards mean scrolling through a few dozen nominees before finding a scale model train post. Where were we? Ah yes, SST and this club always have amazing HO content. Look at that detail!

A realistic layout, "Road subject to flooding". Very nice but maybe not as impressive as the city scene earlier?

Wait, maybe I vote for this one. Look at that round table! I didn't know lego could do "round"

This wiki article credits the AEC Railmotor made from 1922 to 1925 for Victorian Railways in Australia as the first "generally successful" one of its kind. Do you think they mean in Australia or anywhere in the world? Regardless, how cool is this? en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AEC_rai...

I reckon your neck would feel it by the end of the day, but how cool is this little motor trolley? I wonder if you can sit on like a horse so you don't have to bend your neck 90 degrees. Then again you wouldn't want anything coming up behind you unawares.

One way to deal with having to transship freight from one rail gauge to another: a wagon transporter to piggyback a whole car onto rails of different width.

Definitely. Rokuhan in Z scale followed Kato's lead and has very similar controllers. People don't realize that the "analog" controllers are actually digital Pulse-Width Modulation, and have a power curve built in to provide good low speed operations. They design a lot of thought into them.

Those Kato blue controllers and switches are so nice looking.👍

Are you trying to get it to go nice and slow and purpose or was it doing that even with the throttle turned up? Cleaning the track and rolling stock (carefully, following good tutorials) and checking connectivity are the first steps that solve a whole lot of problems and prevent others.

Starting in a little while! I can't say this is one of my favorites to rewatch, but if you've never seen it or not in a while, it is a really clever #scifi -centric episode like an old 1950's or 60's magazine story. A little painful to watch!

That's kind of nice that it's scoped to UK for those of us who like the event videos and don't get enough BR content, and good for you on the savings lol.

Have to go see that and take it down to the end and back or something. Getting into model trains has made the full-sized ones fascinating to me, and even the stations and track are cool.

Tachyon Eddy @tachyoneddies.com · 26/09/2026
That's a neat one.

Tachyon Eddy @tachyoneddies.com · 26/09/2026
That was a surprise for me as well, along with things like making "consist" a noun meaning "what the trainset consists of". Half the fun of any new hobby is using all the new words.
000
Tachyon Eddy @tachyoneddies.com · 26/09/2026
It's a brake van. They used to have special cars with an operator who could apply brakes at the right time for the rest of the trainset so slow down as safely as possible. Needless to say, communication could be challenging.

No this is good info and interesting. I've heard people refer to it as metro. How about the silver line out to the airport (correct me on the color there) and other more recent extensions? How's it divided up between metro and these other co's or services? Many questions now. 😁
