Saw a YouTube video calling Vampire rhe Masquerade the edgiest ttrpg ever made and my immediate thought was “Buddy that’s not even the edgiest world of darkness game.” VtM is about as edgy as a butter knife, and I say that lovingly

so more than "I'm too stupid to understand this at all" they just have way more options out there that are plenty complex and enough to run a multi-year campaign whilst being *relatively* concise or at least written in a way that's easy to learn from and reference

2) actual play considerations. I know plenty of systems which I can understand on paper. But at the table they play like garbage because once edge cases start showing you're now having to parse through a poorly indexed book or piece together a chain of 7 different rules and tables

and then there are two concerns 1) is competing for attention with thousands of other systems. And especially coming from an unknown author not many people are gonna be willing to take the leap of faith and read through way more material than systems with established reputation

not sure how complicated you made it but my experience with game systems being judged as "too complicated" is someone writing a 600 page, A4, 8pt font book which if printed could be used as a murder weapon

the original Fruitful Void still involved a set of subsystems working together, just not solving the central question/choice I feel that often those small systems should instead be just tools, adventure modules or something similar some maybe cool idea, but it still needs to be placed in context

I think you just reverse Sword of the Serpentine because from what I recall that one had a god of trade as the city patron so selling something would count as a ritual and consecrate a given place

I just remembered reading Lem, where a recurring joke is that compared to all other alien species, humans are the only ones obsessed with warfare and destruction whilst also being terribly backwards technologically to the point where most just assume we're fundamentally incapable of doing better

This line of discussion is immediately suggesting the possibility of a companion game to Deathbringer, where you play as orcs battling alway-evil human heroes. "Those humans eat babies on skewers! You can't reason with them!"

but it could be done either as just a silly twist (essentially just palette swap of who's who) or by making your POV be a culture/species different enough that humans just with some exaggeration become the biggest threat imaginable

this actually could be a very interesting idea I don't think I've seen a setting yet where it's the humans taking on the role of the monster race probably because they're usually assumed as POV by default

it's actually when someone tries to apply this logic back to irl (like saying that "migrants are just like orcs" or all the politicians and techbros claiming they're "fighting against forces of darkness") that you should be getting concerned losing a grip on where fantasy ends

Tachi (Matt) @tachi2407.bsky.social · 28/07/2026
of course, bunch of fantasy will go the 'inherent evil" route but my take here is that same as with X-Men and racism at some point you need to accept that fantasy elements stop making a setting match our world 1:1, morality included

tbh that's my read of history, anyone close to what we'd see as "adventurer" is generally either a criminal or ruthless conqueror it's maybe only **some** explorers that capture some of that vibe without slaughtering a bunch of innocent people along the way

or simply kept their head down because they didn't want to make themselves a martyr for a greater cause? is that still just someone you're always justified in violence against? And if so, how'd that be different from a fantasy orc raised in a culture that praises slaughter and conquest?

people who came up with the ideology certainly had agency and can be easily held accountable someone raised under fascism or communism whose primary concern was surviving another day and only ever heard that all ills of his people are due to outside enemies

stops being true as soon as you consider how many people were for example raised and educated within totalitarian systems without being presented with alternatives and allowed to freely choose

if even PLATO is bitching about how we shouldn't be telling those myths because the people in them are horrible role models for a peaceful society then it's not surprising that they also don't quite fit what we'd today see as appropriate and praiseworthy for a hero

Tachi (Matt) @tachi2407.bsky.social · 28/07/2026
in large part because there was no expectation of either gods or heroes being nice 1) they were often deeply flawed and immoral, but considered heroes because they still did undeniably impressive things 2) ancient morality had different values, for example humility and mercy being less important

Tachi (Matt) @tachi2407.bsky.social · 28/07/2026
uhm, plenty of ancient heroes did it for glory or to prove something? have you actually read greek mythology? Many of "heroes" are by modern standards vain, bloodthirsty psychopaths who sometimes do good and sometimes doom themselves and everyone around them because of their emotions

Tachi (Matt) @tachi2407.bsky.social · 28/07/2026
tbh it's even older the craving to have a clear enemy and often a pragmatic or cynical need to have people not question whether to fight even ancient myths often had monsters that were straight up evil and darkness made flesh, and that's before saying the same about your neighbours 4 miles away

I mean, if the game is not focused on beating these guys, if they are just a force of nature, except one with some smarts? like Lord of the Rings doesn't have much moral complexity when it comes to Sauron and threat he poses but it has plenty of complexity in how people act when faced with evil

it's not about narrative, it's emotional either wanting to smash something whilst feeling good about it or having a clear situation with an easy solution, unlike the messy real world and I think that 100 000 games with a tagline of "just punch nazis" come from a similar place

Which should mean that in 10 years or so... that old world doesn't exist because mary sue magic soldiers kept on steamrolling everything So either come up with a reason why magic isn't so perfect or just have everyone use it and think through the consequences rant over

And for whatever reason they just keep on assembling armies that are obviously in every way inferior I feel it expands to almost every "dragons/wizards/whatever would completely change warfare" where magic side is assumed to just get everything for free with their opponents not reacting

Tachi (Matt) @tachi2407.bsky.social · 26/07/2026
Because you know, we can have magic that's superior in every way to modern technology with 0 drawbacks, but then other elements of the setting just stay exactly the same as 13th century Europe The other side has no magic of their own (even for relatively mundane tasks like dealing with disease)

3) undead retain all skills and knowledge but also have no emotions, no issues with morale and carry out all plans with perfect precision And then in contrast, armies they're facing are assumed to be just peasant conscripts dying of disentery

Tachi (Matt) @tachi2407.bsky.social · 26/07/2026
1) only needs a spell to be cast once with little cost and afterwards a skeleton zombie never again needs any food/water/supplies/anything, just casual infinite energy 2) any decay, wear or scavengers stop being a factor, in fact you can hide those corpses for years underground for ambushes

Recently I watched a video on why fantasy undead would be scary, sure But the way it's presented assumed the most stark rift between magic and everything else to the point where I couldn't help but laugh To sum it up, the assumptions were that necromancy:

Minor rant for #ttrpg but also general #worldbuilding I'm growing tired of seeing martial vs caster divide, except done at a global scale For clarity, I see it as having magical/supernatural elements be absolutely perfect, but everything else be held to all real world limitations

Victory Gundam so far is quite a weird ride I like the mecha designs, it's getting the vibe of a desperate struggle and dysfunctional organizations really well But also, it might be hard to make death flags feel more forced and at some point the dark loops around to being unintentionally funny

If nothing in 28 years of my life made me excited enough to unitonically describe it with multiple exclamation marks or claim it changed my whole life Then I probably just can't feel this way and it feels tiresome when modern communication seems to demand such extremes as an entry bar

And I will probably still mention some elements I didn't like But then this by itself seems to be taken as some kind of an attack followed by suggestions that I should search for something I enjoy more Like what?

Quite often I feel like a bit of an outcast for never being truly hyped up about anything Be it TTRPGs (and especially TTRPGs), TV shows, books or any other media, even if it's the best of its kind that I experienced, I won't be cheering, crying or describing it in superlatives

I've heard of it not as a product, but as the way someone stored their rules because they couldn't get proper rulebooks, only photocopies (early 90s in eastern europe) So they indeed kept it in a binder and when houseruling, simply took out and replaced the pages

yeah that clashes with my understanding of "fruitful void", which is a void surrounded by mechanics as in you have mechanics for various peripheral aspects, but don't let them trivialize the central conflict/choice

is it much of grappling? thread started by an artist with most responses being some variation of "yeah it kinda sucks but it's like this for a reason and we prefer it" I agree that their rules on not being able to mention your game in comments and 10:1 ratio are dumb
