Listen, if it didn’t happen to him, it didn’t happen at all.

My self-worth is internal, not performative, which makes reading books to be seen obsolete.
I don't need to signal intelligence by consuming other people's thoughts - my value doesn't come from how many authors I can quote. If it didn't happen to me, it doesn't get to shape me. Everything else is noise.
And that's why fiction doesn't "guide" me the way it guides Jade.
Her world is stitched from stories.

TFW you buy a fun new top at the thrift store, wear it for about 20 minutes, and realize why someone donated it. There’s some kind of scratchy glue residue around the leaf part. I do think it’s fixable, but I wish I wasn’t at work all day before I get the chance.

Yes! That’s exactly it. I just read this book and she traces the line between the Riot grrrls to the fully commodified “Girl Power” branding of the Spice Girls. The guys my age were shouting “Fuck you I won’t do what you tell me” at their moms and feeling like rebels. All meaning was lost.
