1776 was a counter-revolution to uphold slavery. This is common knowledge but it's always fascinating to me to go back and read the 3rd verse of The Star Spangled Banner where they have utter contempt for the slaves that fought for the other side in exchange for their freedom

reading this passage from Blood in my Eye by George Jackson a while back is what helped me understand dialectical materialism:

"We’re looking for connections; the materialist approach is to examine things in their total sequence, see them in process, not to merely establish their being in fixed sequential images, but to take in the state of being in process: infancy, maturity, decline, things in motion, processed into other things in motion. We're constantly laboring to determine that which governs, regulates, motivates all the separate but related & interrelated processes--from the viewpoint that consciousness is determined by dialectical, objective developments." - George Jackson, Blood In My Eye, pg. 42 (1971)

A more serious point: I am struck by the sense of immediacy and urgency, of not just the necessity but the possibility of revolution NOW. When George Jackson wrote the epigraph he had a short time frame in mind. It made sense then. Does it now?

Think a lot about that George Jackson excerpt where he says if he *had* to, for the sake of clarity, define fascism in one word it would be "reform." It's not just in the brutality but in the historical-material maintenance and negotiations that keep it operating. Including the "nice" ones.
